To be bloody delighted MAGA is dying

Just that really! 🥂

(for the record I’m not ultra left, would probably be a moderate Republican in the USA, but I cannot STAND the bully boys in MAGA and their hideous lack of accountability)

Delighted for the USA and it’s such a tonic to see everyone celebrating.

I’m glad Trump got a kicking at the ballot yesterday despite his ludicrous comments about if his name was on it, they would have won. Guy is a fantasist.

However, despite their victory, the democrats still have the major problem of who will lead them into the next election. Which one isn’t an absolute basket case?

If I was an American, I think I’d have to spoil my ballot.

Because that person will need to make a lot of tracks to become President in two years time. This is a win based on gas price in the here and now.

But you can celebrate the humbling of MAGA without necessarily expecting - or even wanting - a Democratic win in two years. There will be plenty of centrist and centre right Republicans celebrating this too, because hopefully it will mean MAGA releasing their death grip on the party. And anyone who wants to see Putin weakened should be celebrating too. As should anyone relieved to see Elon Musk and the tech bro billionaires like him shown that they can spend unprecedented sums supporting MAGA candidates and it still won’t be enough to out spend democracy.

Without Googling OP, name the leader of the US Democratic Party.

Without Googling, name the Sultan of Essex.

What's your point?

Without Googling OP, name the leader of the US Democratic Party.

That's not quite the clever point you think you're making because there isn't one.

I also strongly suspect the Republican leader isn't who you think it is.

11AndCounting · Yesterday 18:18

I'm happy with the results but the election wasn't won on moral principles, or restoring the US's role as the so-called "Leader of the Free World".

It was won on affordability - enough America's wallets felt sufficiently strained that the voted against Trump and his cronies.

This isn't a "return to normalcy", just as 2020 wasn't.

Middle powers still need to view the US as a real, potential threat - but hopefully one we can work with on matters of mutual benefit while continuing to reduce our dependence on it.

Yeah, that's not how US presidential nominations happen.

I'd love to be happy but my concern is that the Democrats will squander this opportunity and double down on the woke bollocks that got them annihilated in the first place.

The woke bollocks is a Trump creation

to be fair, the news since 2025 has focused on America from the point of

oh, great, what's the over-inflated, orange dickhead gone and done now?

Global Tariffs of Fantasy? Check
Selective release of Epstein files? Check
Tantrum-based bombing of Iran and triggering a second wave of COL crisis for the globe? Check

For those who choose to watch the news regularly, I'm not sure there's much space left to consider who the Democrats leader is amongst the running clusterfuck that are the end-timer, Christofacists

More to the point, Trump's death spiral is generating lots and lots and lots and lots of news clicks

however, that does not mean "stick with Trump and his successor because the Dems don't have a rich loudmouth to match him" is the superlative option

The GOP deserved to lose. Not least of all for Vivek Ramaswamy's disgusting campaign.😡 Performative cruelty is never a good look.

They held all the power for the past 2 years and squandered it pandering to Trump instead of sorting out CoL, the economy and housing. Life is harder for Americans. America is weaker than it was 2 years ago. The POTUS is a laughing stock.

The Republicans have 2 years to sort themselves out. Purging MAGA will be a start, but it won't be enough.

I think its more a case of "to be fair, there is no such thing as a leader of the opposition, in the US. Each party selects their candidate for president through a primary process that doesn't start until the year of the presidential election".

The pp's comment was entirely ignorant of how the US's system works.

There was JOY everywhere today. It feels like a new year. I did amuse myself by seeing the posters on another thread insisting that the Democrats only won because they weren't Republicans and then lots of posts about trans people, because of course it has to be that rather than just America seeing its most famous city utterly thriving under a socialist mayor and realising that Trump is scum and Republicans have enabled him.

TooBigForMyBoots · Yesterday 18:38

Vivek's campaign's against Amy Acton showed their true colours.

And the sheer, rampant Islamophobia displayed has been scary to see. They didn't even hide it anymore. Openly mocking Abdul El-Sayed's name, calling him a terrorist, calling Muslims jihadists.

I don't know how American Muslims are surviving in that environment.

A very fair take.

The Democrats' approval rating is about 39%, and disapproval 55%.

Trump also has an approval rating of ~39%, but slightly higher disapproval (~59%).

Midterms are generally a referendum of the incumbant, and this one proved a decisive rejection, but the Dems will still need to find a compelling platform for 2028. Happily, I think they have some decent options for their candidate.

Sidebeforeself · Yesterday 18:52

Thing is though, Trump lost a Presidential election before ( he would disagree of course) and nobody could believe he’d come back and yet he did. I don’t see this as a great awakening yet although its an encouraging sign. But there are plenty more mega wealthy deranged American men out there just waiting for their chance too.
