Husband lied about being on mounjaro

Smartypantsloves · Today 00:32

First time poster so please be kind. Not sure if I’m over reacting so reaching out to see how others would feel in my position.

Bit of a backstory. Recently married. DH and I both wanted to lose weight before the wedding. He succeeded and lost a couple of stone within a relatively short space of time, whilst I completely failed. We had briefly talked about mounjaro, but never very seriously (or so I thought). We talked about being worried about any long term effects and both said we would prefer to go down the healthy eating/exercise route first. Fast forward to the wedding. I was happy for him that he had lost weight, a little disappointed in myself for not finding the motivation to do it myself, but ultimately I was happy in my dress and with the way that I looked on the big day.

After the wedding DH bragged that he had lost 3 stone since January and for the first time I questioned how he had managed it, with very little change in his lifestyle and zero exercise. In hindsight I realise he had been skipping meals and hadn’t had much of an appetite in the run up the the wedding. He was so busy at work so I just put it down to stress and him having a busy brain at the time. He just said he had cut down on his portion sizes and had been drinking less beer.

Anyway, to finally get to my point (thanks if you’ve made it this far)… Earlier today, I mistakenly opened a parcel addressed to him and saw the inside packaging was from an online pharmacy. I then realised my mistake so left the package unopened inside. Apologised to DH when he came home and unaware of any health issues he was having, I questioned what he had been ordering. He was slow to respond and without even opening the package, he told me that a friend at work had played a prank on him and ordered a mounjaro pen for him, basically saying he was fat after seeing the wedding photos (which he isn’t any more anyway). I immediately knew it was rubbish and it didn’t make any sense at all. I looked up the company and as I expected, saw that whoever ordered it would have had to send photos and proof of identity to get the prescription. Challenged DH and he admitted he had lied and apologised. He said he was embarrassed about trying it and he felt stupid for making up a story.

So my question is AIBU to feel really let down and concerned about him keeping this secret and then being dishonest about it? It doesn’t feel like the best start to married life. If he could hide something like this and then make up a ridiculous lie, what else has he hidden from me or lied about? Asked him why he hadn’t discussed it with me first or why he had felt the need to lie about it but he hasn’t explained.. He does tend to bury his head in the sand and avoid conflict whenever possible. He would rather just say he is sorry and move on without explaining himself or talking things through. For clarity, if he had told me he wanted to try it, I would have supported him completely. His body, his health, his choice but to hide it from me just feels really dishonest and to be completely honest, it would have made me feel less disappointed in myself, had I known before the wedding what he had been doing to lose the weight.

@Smartypantsloves For me the problem is that you both talked about losing weight together and decided to try without wli first. Him going behind your back and then boasting about results is very sneaky and also made you feel like a failure for not losing weight. I think he's a twat for doing this to you and I would have a problem with trusting him in the future.

ponkaboo · Today 09:30

I’d be furious with him, OP. Of course he’s entitled to his privacy regarding his health. But it’s the fact that you discussed being on the weight loss journey together, a huge part of which is sbout support for both successes and failures. Then the fact that he bragged about his weight loss which was not only dishonest but will also inevitably have the knock on effect of you feeling bad that you didn’t succeed. Then he lied about it again!
You need to make him sit down and have a Frank discussion about why his behaviour and actions around this were unacceptable and that moving forward you need to work as a partnership where honestly is the central tenet.

He’s a bloke, he was embarrassed- be kind. Maybe you need to think whether you do or say anything that would make him feel he needed to hide it

Fuck being kind. He wasn’t kind, boasting about how well he’d done to the OP when she’d been trying just has hard but had no luck because she didn’t use the bloody WLI’s!!!

IroningWhileWatchingTV · Today 09:35

WinterGhost · Today 01:13

No, I wouldn’t be able to lie to him. He’s never asked me about Mounjaro or how I’ve lost the weight so it’s not come up. And because I’ve been doing it slowly, I’ve not had the sudden drastic weight loss that you see with others. But if he asked me direct, then I wouldn’t lie.

This is the whole point!

(The fact anyone has chosen any particular method to lose the weight is absolutely irrelevant. It’s the lying.)

To be fair, I didn’t try very hard. I just couldn’t find the motivation. I have successfully lost weight before so I know I can do it when I’m in the right headspace and find the willpower, but for whatever reason I couldn’t do that before the wedding. And once I found a dress I was happy with, I think I gave myself permission to stop trying 😂 . It is the lying that has me worried and like others have said the avoidant traits are a concern.

How were you about MJ when you discussed pre wedding?

It took me ages to tell DP as he'd been so judgemental about it before he knew I used it. Referred to it as cheating when talking about others.

So could you have given a similar impression leaving him feeling he couldn't say anything?

FWIW, I'm a real stickler for the truth, so when DP asked me directly, I said I was. I'd felt I'd been lying by omission until that point. I had hinted, but he hadn't picked up on them. It all felt a bit too judgemental from his side and I wasn't wanting to face that. I wanted to enjoy my weight loss.

Happysnappydays · Today 09:55

I haven't told my dh I take WLI. He has a vague idea I take HRT but I don't think I ever actually discussed I with him. The boasting was the only wrong thing the OP's husband has done

Happysnappydays · Today 09:57

I'd also be raging if dh "accidentally" opened mail that was addressed to me.

Smartypantsloves · Today 09:57

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. I always try to look at things from both sides anyway, but the insight has been helpful. I’ll leave it here for now thanks. Feel free to continue to argue amongst yourselves 😂

And to those who can’t understand how I could mistakenly open a parcel for someone else.

  • Expecting parcel of my own.
  • Received notification from Royal Mail that it had been left hidden in the bush outside.
  • Went rooting in bush and found what I thought was my parcel.
  • Opened parcel without looking at label.
  • Later found my actual parcel in different part of said bush.

Hope that clears it up. I promise to check the label on any future parcels left in bushes or anywhere else for that matter.

DH doesn’t know I’m on mounjaro. I just didn’t want to have to explain myself or justify my decision, or have him think I’m taking the easy option. I guess I’m a bit embarrassed my weight go so bad and I couldn’t do it on my own so I don’t want anyone to know.

It’s no reflection on our marriage at all.

But did you two both decide to try to lose weight, then say you wouldn’t use Mounjaro, only to use it.

You’ve not volunteered that you are taking it, he lied and said he wouldn’t, then tried to lie when ‘caught’. It’s red flags all over for the latter

Yellowsubmarine55 · Today 10:00

With so many daily fail kind of judgement headlines about, it is understandable that someone wants to not advertise they are taking it. It's not good to deceive you into thinking his weight loss was achieved naturally but when discussing it before your wedding you gave any indication of judgement then I completely understand why he did it secretly

If he's paying for it with his own money then I don't see any issues, get behind him, support him and take a leaf out of his book and join him. He's done it with good intentions and I applaud anyone that wants to get healthier. The medication is life changing for so many people.

Katastrophyy · Today 10:03

Him using injections would gross me out and the lying would shatter my respect for him. Yanbu

Xiaoxiong · Today 10:05

There are SO many women on the WLI boards who are taking MJ secretly from their spouses. I don't think that particular lie of omission is particularly high up the dishonesty scale - there's so much judgement, fear and shame around being overweight that I can see why so many people just don't want to keep it absolutely private, even from their spouse.

But then you also don't start lording it over someone for having lost weight naturally, having said you're not taking them!

Why would him using a prescription med for the purpose it’s intended and to help him get healthy gross you out.

he clearly felt he was unable to tell the op for what ever reason, which makes me think it was her who was more sure on not using them and Ill informed on the drugs ie long term effects, and he jusy went along with it.

Isittimeformynapyet · Today 00:44

I lost weight with Mounjaro and I freely admit, to myself and others I've talked with about it, that I did it the easy way.

Its great that it worked for you.
Its not the 'easy way' for everyone though. Some of us have insulin issues meaning its literally the only way.

Obimumkinobi · Today 10:21

It looks like he wanted to "win" the wedding day race so badly that he was happy to resort to deception to do it. He knew you felt disappointed about your own journey but secretly carried on regardless. I think he's a bit of an arsehole TBH.

I am very close to my husband but taking the injections is just not something I can talk to him about it admit at all. I think you should be kind and try to let it go.

Are you saying that you too are on WLI without your partner’s knowledge?

TheAmberKoala · Today 10:25

Spaniels4Eva · Today 06:37

From a medical point of view, it's incredibly stupid to be taking regular medication and not informing your partner about it. If he had a medical emergency, it's so important that medics know what regular medication you're taking.

That he would conceal that from you is very worrying, to be honest. Anyone taking Mounjaro is at greater risk of gallstones or pancreatitis, the latter of which can be very serious.

Edited

Was just coming in to say the same. If you need anaesthetic for anything the doctor needs to know you take it.

BobbleBear · Today 10:27

He’s obviously embarrassed about taking the medication after agreeing with you not to, but that’s clouding his ability to understand the situation from your point of view. I think you might need some marriage counselling with a third party present to help him understand your perspective about the lying to your face, because he might be struggling with feeling guilty and unable to think about the situation in a rational way.

A neutral third party might help him to open up and see things differently and I’d sell it to him that you’re struggling with the deception and it’s affecting your love for him and that maybe this person could help you both improve your communication skills.

My DH had been having health issues and tests before we got married and he’d insisted on attending all the appointments on his own. He kept saying everything was fine and it was nothing serious.

Three days before our wedding, I had a phone call (landline) from the hospital. The nurse asked if I was his wife and I said yes as technically I would be in 3 days time. She then confirmed that he was due to start Chemo the following Thursday. She went on about a few things as she assumed I knew all about it so I pretended I did. I was in shock and completely blindsided!

Turned out DH wasn’t planning to tell me anything as he assumed I’d worry and he didn’t want me worrying as we had a young toddler. He’d somehow manage to endure 6 months of chemo without me knowing?

He clearly hadn’t really thought any of this through. FFS!! 🙄😂😂

Thankfully, everything went well and this was about 15 years ago. He’s since realised what an eejit he’d been, but it did take a while for the penny to drop as he was insistent that it was entirely his problem to solve. I’ve had a couple of minor medical issues in the intervening years and he insists on attending every appointment with me as he’s terrified of me getting seriously ill. It’s funny really how having the Chemo completely changed him and he’s a lot more open, supportive and understanding these days.

Good luck!

Oh no, what an awful time for you both and for you to find out 3 days before the wedding 😱. Glad to hear you’re both doing well 15 years later.

Congratulate DH on his weight loss.
Admit he looks perfect.

Claim that he needs to lose no more.
Use the rest of the pens that will arrive for him, for yourself.
Lose the weight that you wanted.
Both have a decent try at sticking with a healthy diet and not lying any more.

Yeah great idea injection yourself with prescription medication you haven’t been cleared for

MerryAquaKoala · Today 10:43

YANBU. Why did he do that, when you both had the same aim, agreed a way forward and he totally ignored that, and bragged about how good he was too, weird - is what you need to know. x

TwitchyNibbles · Today 10:53

He was not unreasonable for taking it to help him lose weight. However YANBU for feeling hurt and probably a little angry that after literally having a conversation about it and appearing to decide mutually that it wasn't the right thing to do, he then went behind your back and watched you struggling and feeling down. I would struggle to look at my wedding photos after that without getting irritated and upset all over again.

FatMrsHoot · Today 10:55

I would be absolutely furious, but also try to think about why he was lying, when I'd calmed down. It's not great, whichever way you look at it!

Does he generally feel like he can't have his own opinion and stand his ground, and therefore has to lie? It's really telling, imo, that he came up with some cock and bull instead of just taking responsibility for his decision. What else is he hiding/will hide in the future? This is the main point of contention for me.

Does he feel embarrassed about taking WLI and thought that you would tell people/not keep it a secret? If yes, do you have form for this?

Is this an ego thing where he wanted to pretend he could do it by himself? In which case, Ew, but less of a values problem.
