Jealous of those who live in A-D?

I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

I’m in band E, the street at the end of our estate is band B (along with the majority of the area). Council tax banding doesn’t mean you live in a better area if you are higher, the average wage for my area is £32k and the average house price is £160k.

Ihateboris · 28/10/2026 15:44

I'm grateful for it, but it'll make no difference overall to my finances when I factor in the 100% increase in heating oil.

I'm a maths teacher. I should be top of the pay scale at £53k, but few schools can afford that.
I didn't even know that council tax bands go up to band E.

They go up to Band H.

Yep, I am in band B. Average house price for my area is £235k.

Absolutely. We won’t get it, don’t need it. Two of our adult children will and I’m delighted for them.

A quick AI shows me the basic salary for a teacher of 30 years is a shade under £53k.
I am sick to death of 'I'm a teacher' or 'I'm a nurse' being used as a shortcut for 'I'm poorly paid'.
I'm middle level in a professional jon that is now degree entry and am paid under £39k for 40 years experience. For context.

Well AI is talking out of its hat. That’s nothing like the basic wage.

Council tax bands are a mess - they'd be better off levelling that playing field first.

I live alone in a two up two down Band A terrace house in a horrible area, think fly tipping everywhere, open drug dealing, street drinking and a general sense of decay. As a single person i pay almost as much council tax as somone sharing a Band D. The Band D houses in my city are in lovely areas. i agree the whole system of local taxation needs to be addressed, council tax does not look at the abilty to pay, the link between the value of property and the amount charged is a very crude tool. It does make sense to bill houses because of course houses don't move around and people do. However, it is a very regressive tax which tends to hit the poorest harder

TRS20 · 28/10/2026 15:48

We won’t get it and don’t need it, we have an expensive house FFS. I’m really happy for all those getting it and who need it. Those who don’t, give it to a charity who will really benefit

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/10/2026 15:39

I'm band G because my disabled accessible house was built in 2010. It's opposite victoriana villas that are band C/D.

Exactly. I am astonished that some people on here think there are A-D areas and don’t realise it’s based on the value of the property and (particularly in a city) you can have Band A flats next door to a Band F large house! As for gun and knife crime 🤣🙄

BillieWiper · 28/10/2026 15:50

Yeah I have absolutely nothing and I'm not jealous of 100 quid. Surely at your age you can see that's not very much money and being jealous of something that people don't personally control is pointless. Of course you should take whatever benefits you're entitled to.

PropertyD · 28/10/2026 15:50

Its a pathetic budget. More small handouts. Someone is paying for this!

Apparently websites were crashing when people were checking what CT they were on - for £100.

We have big issues with very elderly people living often with a poor quality of health. We have over 1 million NEETS that havent been addressed. The ADHD and PIP claims are going through the roof.

Where are the bold steps? Welfare needs an urgent review but at least gerkins are saving us a few pence.

One of their own cabinet ministers was caught saying he would go into meetings and the attendees were always asking who can we tax to pay for benefits.

YOU CANNOT TAX YOUR WAY TO GROWTH YOU MUPPETS

Hello87abc · 28/10/2026 15:50

You have to be earning over £54k to be a net contributor

Gengha · 28/10/2026 15:50

Nowt for us as our modest 3 bed semi is band E. I’m not that bothered for the sake of £100 but same as during Covid its annoying that people in much more expensive houses which haven’t been rebanded in decades get something

CecilyP · 28/10/2026 15:50

HairsprayBabe · 28/10/2026 15:37

@CecilyP it is about 85% of the population - with a strong north/south skew, 91% of people in the north are in band a-d vs 64% in the south

I seriously underestimated that then! So almost every household will be getting £100. I would rather it be targeted to people who really need it.

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 15:50

Again, I’m not jealous - nor do I need the benefit. I have read posts that are begrudging the “welfare areas” receiving another benefit. I obviously live in a more deprived area. I really didn’t mean it to turn into a “woe is me” teacher debate either.

I’m confused as I thought Burnham agreed council tax needs reviewing as it’s out dated and makes no sense?
Someone’s council tax band doesn’t show whether they are struggling with rising energy costs, with areas of the country having higher monthly council tax bills than others.

OmeletteLike · 28/10/2026 15:52

We are band G in London. But live v near properties with a lower band. Not sure our area would be described as leafy or wealthy in any way!

BIossomtoes · 28/10/2026 15:52

Hello87abc · 28/10/2026 15:50

You have to be earning over £54k to be a net contributor

That depends entirely on your use of services. A couple with children under 18 are highly unlikely to be net contributors at that level. A single, childless person will be at a much lower level.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 15:53

I have a hard time believing that the OP and her friends talk about areas being defined council tax bands - that isn't really a thing surely?

Another2Cats · 28/10/2026 15:56

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 14:44

I think you may have misread my post. When the announcement was made I read comments about monies being funnelled into “welfare areas” but these areas aren’t just areas of NEETS or an underclass, there are people who choose to stay there for whatever reason.

I'm not really sure what you're saying here.

This thread just prompted me to check my own local authority. According to the gov dot uk website, back in 2020, 91% of all households were in Bands A to D in my area.

Also that 80% of all homes in England & Wales are in Bands A to D.

If your home is in a higher band then you are living in the top 20% of largest homes in England & Wales.

[EDIT]

Just to add some detail to that 91% figure, it's made up of

Band A - 41%
Band B - 25%
Band C - 16%
Band D - 9%

I’m not jealous! My MIL lives in a Band E area and we follow her area on FB for any needs. There has been comments about the council estates getting money in the budget over other groups. My apologies again for the post. I live in an area with high knife crime and drugs. I thought this was all A-D areas.

Edited

What are you on about Band B areas & Band D areas.

It's the property itself that's given the band -not the area.

In my road there's a small block of council bedsits that are A, flats that are C, houses that are C & D.

1/2 a mile away there are stonking great million pound properties

The ones in A-D properties get £100 it's nothing to do with the area.

SENsupportplease · 28/10/2026 15:59

The lack of understanding of bands is crazy, if you put in my postcode to the CT checker there are bands on my street from B-F. The street is about 40 houses in total. We don’t have knife crime near the smaller houses and leafy luxury near the larger ones, the whole street and wider area is lovely.

Bigger house on nasty street could easily be D or E vs smaller houses and flats on the same street.

MabelsCatMabel · 28/10/2026 15:59

Nevermissabeat · 28/10/2026 14:41

People on council council tax bands A - D are getting £100 towards energy bills.

Not seen the budget.

Thanks

According to my city’s council tax band average its A. I assumed the Bands were based on need of services so although I live in a 3 bed with a drive and garden I pay C. I’m obviously ignorant!

No ...... it's based on the value of your property.
