Jealous of those who live in A-D?

I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

@Mangothistime yes - this is often how tenant farmers work - he barely makes any money from farming now so in reality his only real income is his pension but he cannot give up suddenly as it is also his home - he is working to reduce it now and move on but has to find somewhere else to live- something my brother and i are working with him on (in ye olden days one or both of us would still be living there having gradually taken over the farm work form him, but life does not really work like that any more).

I mean it wasn't a comment on whether all older people should get the money rather than me - just I, personally, will be giving my £100 to my dad who has a lot less money than me despite living in a much larger property.

Frequency · 28/10/2026 15:31

I live in A - D £100 will last us approximately 1.5 weeks, due to damp, mould and crappy insulation in my HA house.

I'll swap if you like, you can have my £100, I'll have your dry, properly insulated house?

PocketSand · 28/10/2026 15:31

Apologies I may be confused - is this EPC band or council tax band?

I can’t speak for all parts of the UK but where I am in the North West, a D council band would be quite a lovely area to live and not classed in any way as a “welfare area”.

This! Oop North too and band D would be a fucking amazing area - houses in a band D would be very, very expensive and the neighbourhood/area would be lovely.

Council tax

Not all houses have an epc band as they won't have needed one

Amberjane41 · 28/10/2026 15:34

It's not a benefit. It's an acknowledgement that energy bills are going up by £450 due to circumstances out of our control and therefore the government has decided to do something. If they just decided to give it to people on benefits half the people on here would be moaning and also plenty of people who work are struggling financially with the rise in energy costs.

Yes it might not be a lot of money and yes some of you don't need it. Good for you. But to moan about others getting it just because you don't need it is selfish.

Using council tax bands is an easy adminstrative way to decide who gets it.

I’m not jealous! My MIL lives in a Band E area and we follow her area on FB for any needs. There has been comments about the council estates getting money in the budget over other groups. My apologies again for the post. I live in an area with high knife crime and drugs. I thought this was all A-D areas.

Edited

You think all A-D areas are rife with knife crime and drugs? Really? I live in a very middle class area in a band A property. Council tax bands are complex and not linked to current values. You say you live in a band C property so will get the £100, I’m not sure what you’re jealous of?

Well, you thought wrong! Probably half the population is in band A-D. I'm in band C in a nice area. Neither you nor I need this money.

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 15:34

Again, sorry if I’ve posted in bad faith. Where I live - C - is the edge of HMOs and high raise flats. We are settled here but I doubt most people would actively choose to move here. I thought all A-D were areas like mine.

In conjunction with the gas standing charge scrapped, the continued VAT scrap on electricity and the £100 payment the entire package of measures projected to be at a value of £200 for the average household.

The ONS estimates the typical median disposable household income for people living within the A to D bracket spans from £18,300 to roughly £38,000 a year. This package equates to 2% of their total disposable income at the lower end and 0.5% at the upper end of these estimates.

There will be some outliers with buckets of cash to spare living in these bands but if you want effective national policy that is implemented quickly then it isn't going to be perfectly targeted, and some people who need it will miss out and some people who don't need it will get it.

£200 will make a big difference to us so I shan't snark at it!

Really? You are a teacher but don’t know that council tax bands A-D don’t automatically mean drugs and knife crime regardless of where the property is?!
This will really blow your mind then - I live in a band F property which has an separate annexe which can never be sold or rented, however it has to have a separate council tax banding (for the bins, apparently!) My DM lives in the annexe which is an A band so will probably receive this benefit, even though it’s part of a bigger Band F property.
FYI - no gun or knife crime at DM’s as far as I know 😂

HairsprayBabe · 28/10/2026 15:37

@CecilyP it is about 85% of the population - with a strong north/south skew, 91% of people in the north are in band a-d vs 64% in the south

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 15:38

There is also no such thing as "band A-D areas" - the bandings are for individual properties based on their value (well their value in the 1990s) . We are a band B flat - down the road there are Band G 5 bed houses worth several million.

I'm band G because my disabled accessible house was built in 2010. It's opposite victoriana villas that are band C/D.

TheFinalNotch · 28/10/2026 15:24

Band D, single income, on oil fired heating.

I will be very grateful for it since there is no price-cap on domestic heating oil like there is for gas. (and you don't need me to tell you what has happened to oil prices recently.....)

It won't help heaps, but it's better than nothing at all.

You are probably one of the people most in need of help. Heating oil is seriously expensive.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 28/10/2026 15:40

I live in band E. I don’t need the £100. Neither though, does my adjoining band C neighbour next door who pays two bands less council tax than us, only by virtue of us purchasing our property after it was extended by the previous owner (so triggering a revaluation) but our neighbours being the owner when theirs was done so was left alone. (Also on oil heating, no gas).
Such an unfair system re the banding.

Same, I’m in leafy quiet town, lovely neighbourhood, very professional/middle class. All the streets in our immediate area are all band A, presumably because they were valued decades ago and never updated. Council tax bands are ridiculous. Six streets away, it’s all bands C upwards for no reason at all - same, if not a little bit “worse”, area.

Thinking that all A-D is knife crime galore is wild 🤣🤣🤣

39K for top band 5 nurse, which is the majority of nurses…fyi

Yeah it's not that they are poor. It's just that they have a union. I think it is them that plead poverty, not the nurses themselves.

Monty36 · 28/10/2026 15:41

The £100 will be clawed back by higher charges.
The standing charge for gas has gone. But it hasn’t. He has allowed the companies to sling it onto the rate charged. Great. Not.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 15:41

@NeverDropYourMooncup Yeah the bands are a mess. I suspect if my fairly large 2 bed flat with garden and garage would be higher than band B if it was built in the last 20 years or so rather than 90 years ago.

There are where we live in the Midlands. Apologies again for applying my local knowledge to the whole country. I have colleagues who live in the “E” area who would never consider living where we work (I live 3 miles away).

A quick AI shows me the basic salary for a teacher of 30 years is a shade under £53k.
I am sick to death of 'I'm a teacher' or 'I'm a nurse' being used as a shortcut for 'I'm poorly paid'.
I'm middle level in a professional jon that is now degree entry and am paid under £39k for 40 years experience. For context.

Exactly, and let's not forget the pensions they receive.

Catza · 28/10/2026 15:43

MellowSubmarine · 28/10/2026 14:49

I don’t really understand this policy. Hasn’t Burnham been (correctly) saying the council tax bands are not great, it needs reform etc, and I don’t think anyone would say it’s a particularly good proxy for need.

And thats not jealousy talking, we’ll receive it. And we don’t need it. And I’m not saying that no one will need it, I’m sure loads will! I just think this isn’t a great way to determine it.

I agree. I am in council band B but I wouldn't say my house is particularly cheap or that I am in a welfare area or in any way in need of this payment. It's nice and will cover a month of heating but I could certainly manage without.
I think there must be a better way to ensure everyone benefits and this can only come from tougher regulations on energy companies who continue reporting record profits while the rest of us figure out whether we can justify turning the heating on in October or should we just put a fourth layer on.

Me too.

What does A-D mean in this context?!

Council tax bands.
