Jealous of those who live in A-D?

I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

Are you actually saying you live in a-d and noone should be jealous of you?

If you grew up in poverty, as I did, you will be toughy at the idea of accepting a benefit but I agree take the small bit of help.

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 14:59

Apologies to previous posters I live in Band C and assumed all Band C areas were like mine.

to be honest, I'm more pissed off about the inequality in council tax bands than some of them getting £100 towards energy bills!! the ones in my council area are all over the place and any newer build properties are in somewhat higher bands than their older counter parts. As an example, there's a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house on the market for offers over £710k that's in band E. My 2 bed, 2 bath flat worth £300k at a stretch is in band F.
That said, £100 would more than cover my energy bill for a month.

InjuredDuck · 28/10/2026 15:01

It's £8 a month.

Dragonscaledaisy · 28/10/2026 15:04

It's hardly a vote winner is it. Tinkering around the edges and banging on about 'hope' because you lack the balls to tackle to big issues.

I can’t speak for all parts of the UK but where I am in the North West, a D council band would be quite a lovely area to live and not classed in any way as a “welfare area”.

I live in the leafy home counties where regular 3-bed detached houses in a nice area are in band D.

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 14:44

I think you may have misread my post. When the announcement was made I read comments about monies being funnelled into “welfare areas” but these areas aren’t just areas of NEETS or an underclass, there are people who choose to stay there for whatever reason.

To be fair the way it’s worded is a bit confusing, plus the baity title.

NimbleTaupeTiger · 28/10/2026 15:05

I think anyone in band A-C who doesn't need it will probably have a friend or relative who could use it and maybe this is how it does good. 👍🏼

fishingtime · 28/10/2026 15:05

I am band d. I’ll be taking it gratefully and putting it towards my heating oil for which we get no support at all.

grrrlatrix · 28/10/2026 15:06

I’m glad you’re jealous. My street is lovely and my neighbours are kind. 🤷‍♀️

FfsNotNow · 28/10/2026 15:07

Council tax bands are a mess - they'd be better off levelling that playing field first.

ScholesPanda · 28/10/2026 15:07

I don't really get what you're talking about OP. Different houses on the same street can be in different bands, just because your house is in Band C it doesn't necessarily follow that is true of all the other houses in your area.

Band D is supposed to be the band that a median valued home would fall into, not a cheap house or area.

It's a bit of an odd proxy, but if imagine it's been picked for the exact reason that it has the opposite effect to what you're stating- rather than only going to those on benefits, it will also go to a lot of middle income households in 3 bed semis, thereby benefitting the 'squeezed middle'.

linelgreen · 28/10/2026 15:08

I cannot believe that the government thinks that a £100 payment makes any difference at all to a household

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 28/10/2026 15:10

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 14:50

Ummm we're band B and have a household income of over £100k (flat in inner London).

We don't need it, I shall be giving my £100 to my elderly dad who is only on a state pension and is in a Band E house.

If your dad is in a band E house yet only has a basic state pension then that's his own stupid fault for not putting money away for his inevitable retirement 🙄

MargoLivebetter · 28/10/2026 15:10

What is making you jealous @MrsMurphyIWish ?

Are you saying you dislike being in Council Band C?

Are you saying that you dislike A-D band properties being categorised differently?

Are you anti the concept of the £100 policy?

Are you anti-teachers being in receipt of this?

Are you anti people who have done well, despite their less than stellar start in life receiving the £100?

I can't work out what is making you jealous!

People on council council tax bands A - D are getting £100 towards energy bills.

When?
lol
i think we’re band D

The 4% tariff on kerosene has been removed

Mossyfox · 28/10/2026 15:11

So do even higher rate tax payers get the £100. Asking for a friend.

linelgreen · 28/10/2026 15:08

It’s an insult!
it’s less than 2 weeks of electricity for us!

PrincessScarlett · 28/10/2026 15:13

The council tax bands are an absolute joke. It's widely known that many many houses are in the wrong council tax band. Martin Lewis has even referred the issue recently on one of his shows. So basically it's a lottery as to whether you get the £100 or not compared to your neighbours.

Plus you have very wealthy people living in bands A-D and very poor people in the wrong higher band or living in a city where properties are more expensive so in a higher band. Surely it would have been better to means test people rather than base it on council tax bands.

At the end of the day though, it's £100 so nothing to be jealous of considering the cost of living and energy bills will be rocketing in the new year.

Depends on lots of factors, but £100 would be huge for me and also a lot of other people I know.

It is 2 months for me.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 15:15

@TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums He's a tenant farmer - he doesn't own the property - it's a draughty old farm house with no central heating (cos his landlord is too tight to install it) that comes with the farm he rents and works on.

Tenants also pay council tax.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 28/10/2026 15:15

Plenty of households this will make a difference for, mine included

MeowDoku · 28/10/2026 15:17

Well octopus have just put our direct debit up by £50 a month so the £100 won't touch the sides
