I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

Council tax bands are mad. I won’t get this £100 because I downsized my house and bought a house for half the price to get rid of the mortgage. If I lived in my old house I’d get the £100. It was worth double my current house - insanity.

The £100 is one off paid to people in January. It will go to the bank account you use if you pay your council tax by direct debit. I think you will get a letter about if you don't pay by direct debit. That is what my local council said anyway, so I guess it will be the same everywhere.

Oh OK, so it's like an extra £100 cash in January...that will be useful then!

Basically. I expect it will just vanish into people's bank accounts and be used for general spending anyway.
People on benefits will get an additional £150 between now and March, but that goes as credit onto your electricity supplier account. I am not sure how it works if you have a pre-payment metre.

It will cover my electricity bill for 2 months. Or my gas bill for over half the year. So, it will make a big difference to some people.

Yes 3 months it covers mibe

Absolutely agree. My road has 300+ houses, some are lovely big 3/4 bed semis with extensions and loft conversions are all are in either Band C or D... I live in a small 3 bed terraced house with 1 reception room, worth considerably less than the other houses and all of my terrace is Band E. We are the only 'new' (25 years old) builds on our street and the only houses in band E. To challenge the banding you need to show evidence of a similar age and style house on your road with a lower band... well, that isn't possible as all the other houses on this road are bigger, older and worth more. It is ridiculous that the cheapest houses are in the highest band. I pay over £320 a month in Council Tax!

Exactly the same here, our flats were the first of the kind in this area (there’s now more that are also in high council tax bands), the “local competition” was previously 3-4 detached bungalows worth considerably more. I tried challenging mine when I first moved in and got told it was due to the square footage but it really isn’t that big compared to the houses! I’ve never managed to find what our flats sold for when first built cos I feel like that would support my theory they were based on the valuation then and not backdated properly.

The whole council tax banding is ridiculous. We are in Band E but houses around us that are much more expensive are in Band D. We couldn’t afford to buy these houses that are in a lower council tax band. For context, we live in a 3 bed detached house on a busy road in a “not great” area, adjacent to a very desirable area where we couldn’t afford to live, but would pay lower council tax.

We're in E. I was pleasantly surprised our house suggests we're affluent in some way. 😆

I mean its £100.

That’s what I thought 😂, we’re band E, in a fairly shit area, in a house worth £350k! I didn’t realise we were considered to be affluent!

I think everyone should get it. I'm in E. Not a penny. Not a penny of child benifit because one salry is over the limit 1. Mortgage went up by £600 a month. Missed out on enhanced chilscare as it started the year my youngest turned 3 anyway. Absolutely nothing from the government at all they seem to think I'm rolling in it! Everyone apart from very well off are struggling.

I think you may have misread my post. When the announcement was made I read comments about monies being funnelled into “welfare areas” but these areas aren’t just areas of NEETS or an underclass, there are people who choose to stay there for whatever reason.

Oh, fuck off. If life were that simple we’d all be millionaires.

blondeseaside · Today 07:20

WTF.

We are in Band F.

Terraced house worth £320k.

How are all these HUGE houses in lower bands?

You are in a couple, both working, one of who earns over £100k and you are annoyed the government is not giving you a £100. Seriously!

You are the very well off.

HPFA · Today 07:22

Revaluation of counvil tax is long overdue but there'll be plenty of losers as well as winners which is why no government will touch it.

Sadly we're paying the price for some things outside our control, like the idiot in the White House, and other things that were. Imagine a world in which we hadn't had Brexit, had abolished the right to buy and invested in social housing, had invested the profits from North Sea oil instead of throwing them away on tax cuts,....

Well we will be grateful for it as we’re in band C

Our income has gone down by a massive amount and our mortgage has almost doubled. Husband also been made redundant for 1st December, probably worst time to look for a job. 😞😟
