Jealous of those who live in A-D?

I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

My parents live in a 3 bed detached house in a sort after North Norfolk costal town and they are band D! As are their equally comfortable neighbours. I live 20 mins inland from them and my slightly larger house in my town's best area is band B. Many council tax bands of older properties are so outdated compared to recent bandings!

Fishhooksandjellybabies · 28/10/2026 15:18

Well, we're in a beautiful 3 bed semi new build - lovely cul de sac surrounded by prosperous villages and we are Band C, We are anything but deprived and will be donating our £100. Stupid policy. Really stupid.

A quick AI shows me the basic salary for a teacher of 30 years is a shade under £53k.
I am sick to death of 'I'm a teacher' or 'I'm a nurse' being used as a shortcut for 'I'm poorly paid'.
I'm middle level in a professional jon that is now degree entry and am paid under £39k for 40 years experience. For context.

39K for top band 5 nurse, which is the majority of nurses…fyi

GasPanic · 28/10/2026 15:19

It's better than just giving a blanket amount to people that don't need it.

Really I think it should have been A-C only.

The good news is it will work in parallel with the service charge cut, as this will also benefit low users and people at the low end of energy use, whereas excessive usage tends to be more associated with big expensive houses.

It's great that the standing charge is going and this will help incentivise lower energy use so a win for the environment as well.

XenoBitch · 28/10/2026 15:14

It is 2 months for me.

Now that gas standing charge has been removed that will pay half of my gas bill for the year. We only use gas for heating and water and our house is very well insulated so that £100 will do nicely thank you.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 14:50

Ummm we're band B and have a household income of over £100k (flat in inner London).

We don't need it, I shall be giving my £100 to my elderly dad who is only on a state pension and is in a Band E house.

He will get winter fuel allowance £200 or £300 if he's over 80

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 15:20

I’m not jealous! My MIL lives in a Band E area and we follow her area on FB for any needs. There has been comments about the council estates getting money in the budget over other groups. My apologies again for the post. I live in an area with high knife crime and drugs. I thought this was all A-D areas.

I'm a maths teacher. I should be top of the pay scale at £53k, but few schools can afford that.
I didn't even know that council tax bands go up to band E.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2026 15:20

@ImFckingMattDamon exactly - there are loads of older flats in London worth well in excess of half a million that are in bands A - C because they were valued decades ago and have never been updated.

HowHaveYouFoundThis · 28/10/2026 15:22

Teachers seem to get paid less now due to academies would you say that's true? Crazy how little they and childcare workers get paid imo

JulietteRoche · 28/10/2026 15:22

This attitude is going to get Reform in. What makes you feel entitled to leech money from hardworking people!?

DahliaDelights · 28/10/2026 15:23

Its ridiculous, there will be so many people living in those bands that dont need the £100 but will take it. What the hell is the budget doing giving away money that not assessed in some way. Of course some people need it , but there are going to be people who on average arent suffering day to day because they have adequate incomes. Just because someone lives in a band a-d doesnt mean they are all destitute.

Energy companies will just find a charge to add to take it...

TheFinalNotch · 28/10/2026 15:24

Band D, single income, on oil fired heating.

I will be very grateful for it since there is no price-cap on domestic heating oil like there is for gas. (and you don't need me to tell you what has happened to oil prices recently.....)

It won't help heaps, but it's better than nothing at all.

Flicitytricity · 28/10/2026 15:26

I live in a 4 bed detached, semi rural, opposite golf club and country park.
I'm band D.
The banding is a nonsense and needs reviewing.
The Salvation Army will do well out of me this Christmas😁

It goes up to H. I in Wales.

People on council council tax bands A - D are getting £100 towards energy bills.

Not those who live in HMOs nor house shares where the £100 will be going to the landlord, or where it's big/expensive enough not to be in band A-D, i.e. most HMOs! So yet again, no benefit to those who need it most.

PocketSand · 28/10/2026 15:27

My house is band E - 3 points off band D - so won’t benefit from that. There is no gas in my village so won’t benefit from the standing charge removal.

Looks like I’ll be applying to the hardship fund for help with oil heating costs - just ordered 500 litres for £700 which won’t last long due to extra heating needs of disabled son.

I thought that the restriction to bands a A-D was something to do with promoting energy efficiency but maybe I’m being too generous. I’d Imagine that a lot of the poor and needy live in band E and below and the disabled and elderly will have higher need to heat their homes all day so won’t benefit from increased unit cost resulting from abolition of standing charge.

monicaspurpledoor · 28/10/2026 15:27

i live in a band B, in an ‘up and coming area’. Council tax in our north east town is one of the highest (top 6) in the UK.
anyone with a band E house in our area would be very posh! (I couldn’t tell you were those houses are!)

GasPanic · 28/10/2026 15:29

I'd like to see the same on water bills.

£50 for Band A-C should help.

Once this has been tested out they can use it to start a whole load of means tested benefits.

People on council council tax bands A - D are getting £100 towards energy bills.

Nobody in social housing built after 2000/the cutoff date for valuations in London and the southeast, then?

Lucky them. Needing disabled adapted homes, not being able to choose where as needing accessibility trumps picking and choosing, only having a tie to the area they've been in their entire lives so ineligible anywhere else. No help for them.

SweetBaklava · 28/10/2026 15:29

The banding system is not fit for purpose 😤

We're in council tax B and aren't particularly poor we just live in a house that's an adequate size for a small family without the en-suites and guest bedrooms and utility rooms that would make life that little bit more luxurious but unnecessarily so.

Council tax is based on the value of your house in 1991. My previous house was band C. I’ve literally moved around the corner and my house is band G. Same village, same service… just a bigger house.

safetyfreak · 28/10/2026 15:31

Oh my, people are moaning about money going to people on benefits and pensioners, yet here is a scheme which will benefit a lot of families, and there's still moaning, "Oh I dont need it! why do that?" boo hoo

I am in band D, and happy to take the £100.

I might be wrong but I always thought council tax banding was largely based on the size of your house rather than where you live? I live in a very lovely village in an expensive part of the country and I’m a Band C as my house is a 3 bed semi.

It’s nice to be included in something for a change! Although I can’t say that £100 will be particularly noticeable really, given that food, gas and electricity and council tax will go up around that same time it l’s given. I hope it comes in a lump sum because if it’s £8 a month like a previous poster said then I can absolutely say I won’t notice that in the pot at all. It will just be eaten up in Tesco given the rate the food shop goes up.
