I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

What are you on about Band B areas & Band D areas.

It's the property itself that's given the band -not the area.

In my road there's a small block of council bedsits that are A, flats that are C, houses that are C & D.

1/2 a mile away there are stonking great million pound properties

The ones in A-D properties get £100 it's nothing to do with the area.

Black Country.

This thread is insane. There is no such thing as a band 'area'. It's by individual property, not area or postcode.

Apologies to previous posters I live in Band C and assumed all Band C areas were like mine.

You’ll actually find due to how outdated the council tax banding is. There is houses in London who pay less council tax than those in the north east.

I am married to a teacher. His salary has run our household in Surrey for more than a decade without claiming a single penny. Not sure what you are on about but whatever that is, the chip on your shoulder is massive

So did I 😆

The OP clearly has no idea what a 'net contributor' is in addition to not understanding council tax bands. Public sector workers contribute their labour to the state (in addition to the taxation also contributed by anyone earning the same salary) and are arguably therefore net contributors by definition.

Apologies for confusing council tax bands with counties. I agree with 2 teacher salaries can provide a very comfortable lifestyle - especially for those we teach and we provide for from our earnings.

I live in a C in a wealthy area - good for me, No means testing. 👍

My road is a mixture of band bs through to band es and above. i live in a normal 20 year old housing estate. There’s a wide mixture as there are most if not every place i have ever lived. I’m in a very small standard 3 bed semi band D here.

I’m not jealous! My MIL lives in a Band E area and we follow her area on FB for any needs. There has been comments about the council estates getting money in the budget over other groups. My apologies again for the post. I live in an area with high knife crime and drugs. I thought this was all A-D areas.

Edited

Didn’t you say you’re a teacher? You’re not very worldly are you OP?

My band D property is a 5 bed detached home in the south.

Obviously have no clue about council tax bands. On MN “net contributor” is always applied to those who financially take away from the state to what they provide financially but that’s a whole different debate.

Again, apologies for my ignorance!

My band D property is a detached 5 bed with large garden and double garage, in the south.

You’re not very “worldly” for a teacher are you OP?

I'm a band C teacher in rural North Yorkshire. We don't have any knife crime or drugs etc, but we also don't have any public transport or local amenities. We all live in modest 50s semi's. I think it is a nice place to live (if you like the quiet life) and am very grateful for our £100 this winter.

RedTagAlan · 28/10/2026 16:23

DahliaDelights · 28/10/2026 15:23

Its ridiculous, there will be so many people living in those bands that dont need the £100 but will take it. What the hell is the budget doing giving away money that not assessed in some way. Of course some people need it , but there are going to be people who on average arent suffering day to day because they have adequate incomes. Just because someone lives in a band a-d doesnt mean they are all destitute.

Energy companies will just find a charge to add to take it...

Quote " Energy companies will just find a charge to add to take it..."

And that is capitalism. This is why I say utilities should be in public ownership.

topcat2014 · 28/10/2026 16:24

With 2 adults and 2 children, for example, you are not a net contributor until household income is above 70k

Sartre · 28/10/2026 16:25

MammaTo · 28/10/2026 14:53

I can’t speak for all parts of the UK but where I am in the North West, a D council band would be quite a lovely area to live and not classed in any way as a “welfare area”.

Same in Yorkshire to be honest. We’re D and I just checked what a house in D is supposed to be worth, ours is worth far more so I have no idea how it’s actually calculated. We’re high earners so receive no benefits and I’m glad we’re finally getting something even if it’s only a token.

boredandgrand · 28/10/2026 16:27

Why would anyone be jealous? My council tax is 4.5k so £100 isn't going to dent that much.

Cyclingmummy1 · 28/10/2026 16:27

TwoBagsOfCompost · 28/10/2026 15:32

This! Oop North too and band D would be a fucking amazing area - houses in a band D would be very, very expensive and the neighbourhood/area would be lovely.

Not necessarily. My street ranges from band B to band F.

Treedownagain · 28/10/2026 16:29

We are band D and have a household income of over £100k and equestrian facilities including stables and over 10 acres of land. Still looking forward our £100 though 💰

topcat2014 · 28/10/2026 16:24

How many years at that income before all the accumulated years of not being a net contributor are paid off ?

If you see what I mean? If we took a cut off age of say 70, and we added up all the money that person contributed v taken out, I wonder what % of people would make it into the "total net contributor" column.

EasternStandard · 28/10/2026 16:31

PropertyD · 28/10/2026 15:50

Its a pathetic budget. More small handouts. Someone is paying for this!

Apparently websites were crashing when people were checking what CT they were on - for £100.

We have big issues with very elderly people living often with a poor quality of health. We have over 1 million NEETS that havent been addressed. The ADHD and PIP claims are going through the roof.

Where are the bold steps? Welfare needs an urgent review but at least gerkins are saving us a few pence.

One of their own cabinet ministers was caught saying he would go into meetings and the attendees were always asking who can we tax to pay for benefits.

YOU CANNOT TAX YOUR WAY TO GROWTH YOU MUPPETS

I get you. Without the £100 it really would be gherkins.

Auroraloves · 28/10/2026 16:36

I don’t understand their thinking. Their could be some very wealthy people in those bands 🤷‍♀️

HelenHywater · 28/10/2026 16:36

Well it's not a good move in my view - they should have targeted those most in need, not just applying £100 discounts to blanket council tax bands.

I also don't understand the OP's point about "band c area". In our area which is made up of flats and houses, social housing, private rented and owner occupied, there are many different bands.

Cyclingmummy1 · 28/10/2026 16:39

spacecowboypeanut · 28/10/2026 16:09

Well, yes. There were more properties valued in the lower bands so fewer to pay the higher rates. You need to generate a certain income so the lower rates need to be higher.
