To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

Mine’s a plain but I always want proper onion bhajis which you definitely cannot obtain down ole tescos.

I want a paneer tikka masala, proper pops with proper chutneys. Maybe even some samosas.

Mmm. Poppadoms with all the chutneys and fresh onion salad.

Ultimately, she thought she was being helpful and saving you all money. Perhaps she saw some that looked OK.

I think you just have to accept it with a good grace now.. because meeting up and having fun together is what the evening is really about.

But tell her nicely that you'd prefer to order your takeaway next time. And just chalk this one up to experience. Don't let everyone hold in resentment it will only spoil your evening. Life's too short.

Bring a gorgeous pudding to compensate.

I have a sense of humour.
But that still doesn't alter the fact that off hand comments and sarcasm don't translate well into the written word . They rely on the nuances of human interaction to actually work. Otherwise they come over as literal.

No they don't. What are you on about? Have you never read a funny novel?

I’m with you.

If I have to eat curry I’d want to do so in a restaurant. I loathe Indian takeaway and it may as well be from Tesco.

Our Indian takeaway comes from an Indian restaurant… it’s the exact same food! I know it is, because I’ve eaten it in the restaurant many times, and I’ve had it as a takeaway many times. It’s a very good Indian restaurant that has won many awards in an area renowned for its excellent Indian restaurants. The takeaway is a far cry from an M&S ready meal!

horseplay12 · 22/10/2026 19:45

I rarely have a takeaway nowadays, so if that was the plan I would have been thinking about it & looking forward to it for days.
call me petulant, but a ready meal meal deal from a supermarket just wouldn’t cut it for me at all, that would be a normal weekend night, not a meal I’d been looking forward to sharing with friends. I don’t blame you at all for being annoyed.

pinkfondu · 22/10/2026 19:46

I wouldn’t want someone picking for me, that’s half the fun

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 22/10/2026 19:12

I would also point out that supermarket naan bread is utterly pathetic.

I agree ! Like chewing cardboard.
Our local takeaway one is soft and buttery (ghee) and garlicky , and huge ! Oh help, I want one now …

morgan56 · 22/10/2026 19:48

That would really p me off. How did she know what you would both order!? I save myself for a takeaway so this would ruin my week.

'That's fine, you enjoy your supermarket one, I was looking forward to an actual take away so will be ordering that. Looking forward to see you all'

This!

Just say it!

RhubarbAndMustard · 22/10/2026 19:49

I’d be very disappointed. Can you say sorry you just don’t like supermarket versions of curry and would prefer to stick to takeaway. If your friends are all happy with the change you might just have to suck it up though. I’d be tempted to take a micro meal I preferred though. Quite like a mac and cheese but not a curry.

kombuchabucha · 22/10/2026 19:50

I really like the M&S Indian stuff so wouldn't mind that at all! Would prefer it in fact.

Saves the hassle of ringing and ordering then collecting it I suppose (or maybe you live somewhere less rural than me that actually delivers it to your door!).

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 22/10/2026 19:50

I wouldn’t mind if I wasn’t expected to contribute?!

If you have been invited over to split the cost of a takeaway then I’d want to be able to order from a restaurant and choose what I’d like.

RationallyAngry · 22/10/2026 19:42

Make it peshwari instead of plain and this is pretty much my perfect order. I might add a cheeky chana dal too.

I’ll eat Peshawari no problem 🤝

comealongdobbeh · 22/10/2026 19:51

‘Thanks friend, but I actually quite fancied one from the takeaway so I’ll pick mine up on the way over’

You can always order from a takeaway if you others want still - but I’d not lose sight of fact the real thing is just you all hanging out. I wouldn’t worry about the food.

Tesco mini naans are nice FOR A MIDWEEK HOME CURRY. Not a patch on an actual naan that’s made in a clay oven though obviously.

Netcurtainnelly · 22/10/2026 18:38

Does it matter. Surely your looking forward to get together regardless of the food

Well by that token you may as well have beans on toast.

Lovely. You mean you'll order your own though, right? I'm not sharing!

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 19:54

Definitely no bloody sharing.

Of course I've read funny novels. What has that got to do with sarcasm and off hand comments?

OP is expected to contribute. Her friend is a CF imo.

Maybe I'm a shit friend and a terrible person, but I don't really understand replies like this.

Surely it's obvious that however amazing your friendship group, a Friday night get together over some plain cheese sandwiches and a glass of tap water is going to be very different to night with a cracking takeaway and a good bottle of wine?

Itsallabouttea · 22/10/2026 19:57

Ah it wouldn't be a food thread without people being knobs about vegans. Hello, slim healthy vegan here who doesn't live on legumes and fake meat 👋

Anyway back to the OP - I think the issue is you're still having to pay for something you essentially didn't want so I can see why you're a bit miffed. I'd probably just suck it up but agree it's not the same as a proper takeaway!

OldPyjamas · 22/10/2026 19:58

Yeah I wouldn’t be going oven food is shit

I agree that supermarket curry deals aren't that great, but it wouldn't stop me going.

Sometimes novels are funny because of the offhand comments and sarcasm that my reading comprehension allows me to decode.

Perhaps you read funny novels and only laugh at the overt jokes?
