To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

DiligentDandelion · 22/10/2026 19:58

A ready meal instead of a proper curry. No chance. Nothing to stop her eating hers. Nothing wrong with you saying you’ve been really looking forward to the take out, so you’ll order in. She can’t just make a unanimous decision you’re all having a ready meal, she didn’t even ask you what meal you wanted. I’m guessing the others will be on the same page as you.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 22/10/2026 19:59

Ok? 🤷‍♀️

SparkleHorse82 · 22/10/2026 20:00

She probably realised that she can’t afford a proper takeaway and did this to conceal it. Don’t be a prick about it.

autumnalmelancholy · 22/10/2026 20:00

Those that are ‘gutted’ or ‘devastated’ need to get a grip.
Your friend has just made a gesture on good faith. Get over it

SparkleHorse82 · 22/10/2026 20:00

That is just a phenomenally rude suggestion.

MagicThanks · 22/10/2026 20:01

I’d have to message oh I was looking forward to a take away! See if anyone else agrees. If not, you can always back down quickly. I’d still go but be less excited. Can’t believe she’s asking you to pay for it. If she was skint she should have offered to make one at home (on her)

Bexisdaft · 22/10/2026 20:02

Exactly

Those talking about being horrified etc probably also rather lacking on the friend front. Of which it seems so many on Mumsnet seem to suffer from!

TheRealSmurfette · 22/10/2026 20:03

What’s wrong with home made curry? Are they a bad cook?
Home made curry here is amazing! WAY nicer than supermarket ready meals!

mcmooberry · 22/10/2026 20:03

I would absolutely hate this, how disappointing, glad the majority agree you are NBU.

RationallyAngry · 22/10/2026 20:03

Supermarket takeaway meals for two are over a tenner where I live. I don't understand how buying those is saving her money? Unless she's planning to charge everyone over the odds and get them to sub her share for free?

And if they're such good friends, why would she not just say she's too hard up this month? That's what me and my mates would do. And if that was the case, we'd all chip in and buy hers for her. We've all done it before for each other.

Wewillmeetagainoneday · 22/10/2026 20:04

I actually can't think of novels that are funny because of jokes. The humour usually lies in the plot, the situations characters find themselves in, and the conversations they have, and the way the characters behaviour.

RationallyAngry · 22/10/2026 20:05

So the nuance, then?

RachelGreep87 · 22/10/2026 20:05

She's a fucking menace.
To the holier than thou posters who think the food is irrelevant to the evening, where does it stop?
How about the £1 frozen Chicken Curry from Iceland? Although that would probably be insensitive to people who can't afford that one.

Wewillmeetagainoneday · 22/10/2026 20:07

You have lost me now. And tbh I think we have totally derailed OP's thread so I'm leaving it now.
Apologies to OP.

DiligentDandelion · 22/10/2026 20:08

It really isn’t. It was rude of her friend to decide the others are eating a meal deal when they’d all agreed to order in a take out. Where was the text to them all asking if they were ok with the new plan? She’s not going to make the friend buy a take out if she doesn’t want to or can’t afford it, that would be rude.

Bexisdaft · 22/10/2026 20:08

Does it occur to you that the reason why you are so lonely @RachelGreep87 is because of this kind of thinking?

DPotter · 22/10/2026 20:10

Thing is with a takeaway you get the onion sald with the poppodoms, the really nice nan bread, all the chutneys etc. You don't get those with a supermarket curry. I much prefer a takeway curry. Have never found a supermarket one as good as our local - and that includes M&S which I find a bit bland

TheChosenTwo · 22/10/2026 20:11

I’d be bloody gutted. I’d rather go hungry than eat a supemarket ready meal! What a disappointing sad idea of a nice treat of a dinner 😭😭😭

OldPyjamas · 22/10/2026 20:12

I have vegan friends whom I never meet for meals as I can't eat vegan food

Vegan food is just food that's not meat. Like beans on toast. What is it that you can't eat?

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 20:14

So she has sent a photo and my friend has worked out it’s 2x each of:

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-main-for-two-chicken-tikka-masala-400g/5542097

and

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-side-for-two-pilau-rice-300g/5542135

Plus a pack of naans

We are howling in a seperate chat 😂😂

We are going to suggest covering the cost and getting a takeaway, she can freeze what she has already got or give it to her dog!

WaneyEdge · 22/10/2026 20:15

Almost like changing the plans of three others and deciding what they will eat and expect them to pay for it without any discussion.

Chickpeacurrywithrice · 22/10/2026 20:16

It’s realty not!

BertSymptom · 22/10/2026 20:16

I can’t see how OP is being a horrible friend for telling strangers on the internet she thinks, rightly, that a supermarket ready meal is not as good as a takeaway.

If anyone’s being a horrible friend it’s host friend for agreeing on a plan with the group only to change the plans to something similar but let’s face it worse without checking with the group.

If it were me I’d grin and bear it and then get the takeaway I was looking forward to with DH the next night.

abracadabra1111 · 22/10/2026 20:17

I had a friend like this. Plans were always agreed then she’d change them and just say things like ‘I’m going to do X’. It was fucking awkward, the rest of us would be thinking do we tag along / follow or do our own thing.

She’d also arrange to come for dinner, then show up saying she’d eaten and not hungry or invite people round for dinner then say that she couldn’t be bothered to cook but we could have some beans on toast.

it’s really shitty behaviour.

JulietteRoche · 22/10/2026 20:21

Ugh! What was she thinking!? Good for you for not putting up with it.
