To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

How to ruin a friendship with that comment, very passive aggressive. Does it really matter? It’s the get together that’s important

GoodChocolate · 23/10/2026 20:40

I think really the one who is hosting should choose because it's not as if shr can' decide its too expensive and stay at home instead

'That's fine, you enjoy your supermarket one, I was looking forward to an actual take away so will be ordering that. Looking forward to see you all'

I agree with this,
Your friend can save the supermarket ready meals she got, for herself.
You could order yours as planned.
It had been agreed you would order a takeaway, so eating a ready meal is disappointing.

thebrowncatisback · 23/10/2026 20:44

No!

Microwave food in plastic?

gross

thebrowncatisback · 23/10/2026 20:45

It’s not appropriate to invite someone over, serve up microwaved food and ask for the money

your friend is a terrible host

Does it matter. Surely your looking forward to get together regardless of the food

Nope. No matter how much I love being with friends the food also matters a lot.

She should have checked with you all first? Does she usually change plans at the last minute even though something has already been agreed? x

Rpop · 23/10/2026 21:06

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:40

No, we’ll have all paid for our own.

She definitely should have checked first as she’s just spent your money for you.

The idea of an Indian take away is enough to pick me up on an otherwise bad day. I’d feel bitterly disappointed if it was swapped for a supermarket curry-style dinner. Regardless of the company. I asked my mum and she said the food would only bother her slightly and it’s more about the company. I’m sorry. Food first.

My friend has replied to say she will have the ready meal as planned but is happy for us to get a takeaway in. So we will do that.

I’d love to know how it all went. Who buys Asda currys for a social curry catch up? I would potential eat one, but only if I was in a tricky situation and felt a bad migraine coming on and perhaps the kitchen has blown up.

PoddleOn · 23/10/2026 21:16

Perhaps she’s struggling for money but she should have put it to the group. Supermarket takeaways are awful, if it had to be a cheaper option I’d have rather gone for a charcuterie board.

"Proper curry"? Indian takeaways aren't even proper curry! Go to India, taste the real thing, then come back.

Can't. The last bus has gone.

DeeNiall · 23/10/2026 21:24

How's the takeaway @Teriyt ?

JMAngel1 · 23/10/2026 22:27

Jesus Christ you guys would fall out with your own reflection! Over a curry?
Cop yourself on - go to your friend’s house and eat what’s put in front of you. It’s really not a big deal.

But the friend was charging them for it .

That's the " off" bit

Not as though she's paying

Teriyt · 23/10/2026 22:38

I’m home now, the takeaway was lovely. My friend had some left overs after she scoffed her ready meal and naan. So no harm done!

I'm so glad that you stood your ground. A bit cheeky of her to eat/keep the leftovers you had paid for, though. Does she has form for being cheap?

Where has OP said, anywhere, that she would fall out with her friend over this?

Happyjoe · 23/10/2026 22:45

I'd rather have a sandwich. I don't think I've ever had a decent supermarket/M&S curry.

Glad you enjoyed yours OP!

You obviously don't think that good hosting is important. I disagree.

Pinkdollymixx · 23/10/2026 22:54

Askandyforcompo · 22/10/2026 18:36

It depends where from. M and S is probably better than some takeaways.

M&S ready meal would be the ONLY exception IMO!

Hosting but expecting the guests to chip for the ready meals!

JandLandG · 23/10/2026 23:40

Don't be daft, OB - M & S, Waitrose, Charlie Bingham curries can be v nice.

Some samosas/bhajis (Sainsbury's hajis are the best, I reckon btw) and make your own pilau rice and you've got a delish night in and saved enough money for the booze compared to getting in a takeaway, deffo.

Bit presumptuous of your mate to just go ahead though. If they're crappy Tesco meal deal rubbishy meals, I'd be a bit pissed off if it were for a nice Saturday night meal plan, teebs.
