To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

I actually can't believe you're posting about this. I wonder how you get through the day if this has annoyed you.

Oh well. 86% of voters totally understand where OP's coming from.

Your "how you get through your day" comment is stupid frankly, and I'm sure you know that.

Devastating ? Omg dramatic

Yeah, there's an element of humourous hyperbole that's gone right over your head here.

Sheepsmellnice · 23/10/2026 18:49

I would be spiraling

I'd be shaking, crying, throwing up.

My friend has replied to say she will have the ready meal as planned but is happy for us to get a takeaway in. So we will do that.

Honestly, she sounds like a pain in the arse.

PeachyPeachTrees · 23/10/2026 18:58

I'm glad she is having the ready meal she chose for herself and the rest of you get a proper treat take away. Host didn't just change the plan but also chose exactly what you would eat. I like chicken korma or passanda and coconut rice. I'm not a fan of tikka or bahjis.

This is devastating, and the poster who thinks m and s is similar must never have had proper curry.

"Proper curry"? Indian takeaways aren't even proper curry! Go to India, taste the real thing, then come back.

riceuten · 23/10/2026 19:08

Personally ? I'd be minorly irritated but wouldn't make a thing of it. Meeting and chatting is the main reason I'd be meeting up, the food is secondary

MalcolmTent · 23/10/2026 19:14

Askandyforcompo · 22/10/2026 18:36

It depends where from. M and S is probably better than some takeaways.

It's really not.

Agonyaunt53 · 23/10/2026 19:21

Oh No that's rubbish! Your best option is to say 'freeze the supermarket stuff, our treat,' and fork out.

OutAndAbouting · 23/10/2026 19:27

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:39

No idea. But I’ve had the M&S ones before and wasn’t impressed.

No, don't like M&S food, but Waitrose CTM and Aloo Gobi Sag is a whole new dimension.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 23/10/2026 19:31

What did you have @Teriyt ? And crucially…..did the ready meal host dip into your good stuff?!

Oh bore off. There are millions of different types of curry from a large proportion of the planet that are all a variant of 'cook meat or veg or pulses in a load of spices and something moist'; there's nothing magical about the Indian version(s - there's about a million there alone), and the British take on it has been around long enough to comfortably count as a 'proper' curry.

I thought that curry was a term coined to describe Indian-style food.
'Curry' Isn't Actually An Indian Word. Here's Where It Comes From

Sadly not all takeaways are proper curries either! As someone that has been ill many times from various different takeaways I will now only eat M&S,homemade or from somewhere recommended by a friend if I’m having a curry.

TokyoSushi · 23/10/2026 19:46

This has happened to me before, totally rubbish alternative! Sympathies OP!

UbiquitousPistachio · 22/10/2026 18:44

It’s shit because it wasn’t what was agreed plus who knows what she bought from the supermarket? She has taken away everyone’s choice completely. Really selfish of her.

Calm down.

"Oh bore off"? Charming!

All I meant was that Indian "curry" in the UK is nothing like curry in India. So why is that ok, but a version from a supermarket isn't? It's double standards! So they're not actually fussed about the food not being authentically Indian, but god forbid it's a bit cheaper and from a supermarket?

DongQing12 · 23/10/2026 19:50

I’d be so hacked off at this. Supermarket curries are rubbish and I don’t want anyone picking my food for me!

Clafoutie · 23/10/2026 19:53

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:54

I obviously don’t know the ins and outs of her finances, but I don’t believe she’s doing too badly. It’s a c.£20 takeaway for crying out loud, who can’t afford that once in a while. The way her face rarely moves suggests she’s got plenty of disposable cash 😂(she’ll not mind me joking about that, it’s an in joke).

A lot of people.

If I have a takeaway curry I want it to be an authentic takeaway curry.

MixedBananas · 23/10/2026 19:59

I think indian takeaways are horrible. Having had authentic indian food I can never eat from takeaways and the super market even worse!

berightorbehappy · 23/10/2026 20:04

My husband does this too 😭 and it means using an oven ! Devastating 🤣

This is such weird behaviour. If she’s skint why not just say “would love to have you all but can’t afford a takeaway guys” easy??
