To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

So she has sent a photo and my friend has worked out it’s 2x each of:

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-main-for-two-chicken-tikka-masala-400g/5542097

and

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-side-for-two-pilau-rice-300g/5542135

Plus a pack of naans

We are howling in a seperate chat 😂😂

We are going to suggest covering the cost and getting a takeaway, she can freeze what she has already got or give it to her dog!

YABU for “howling” about this in a separate chat. How pathetic. Don’t go, invite your better friends around to yours for a proper takeaway instead.

She's tried to do a nice thing and save you all some money. Or maybe she's feeling the pinch.

If she's got it wrong, friends would talk to each other about it.

But there was an agreed plan so it isn’t a “nice thing” to unilaterally change that. If she’s feeling the pinch she should have said so at the time the plans were being made.

RubyToDosDay · 22/10/2026 23:12

Sounds like the sort of thing my sister would do stingy cow
It is definitely not the same, and she should not have assumed - Id be really annoyed, too!

Moveoverdarlin · 22/10/2026 23:14

Christ they look truly awful.

Ugh, YANBU! DH does this and it really annoys me. Supermarket curries are really not the same thing at all. Guaranteed disappointment.

My DH once suggested a takeaway curry, and then made a salad! Ive barely forgiven him for it and it was about 2012! 🤣🤣

It depends where from. M and S is probably better than some takeaways.

It’s really not

Thesafetygeneral · 22/10/2026 23:31

I’d just say I’ll eat at home before I come.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/10/2026 23:34

I’d be really bloody disappointed.

Just say 'oh thanks but I'm looking forward to a takeaway from xyz so I'll order in, but if you'd prefer to cook that's fine!'. I know she's hosting and it's a little rude, but not as rude as buying supermarket food and expecting you to pay for it.

Please don't do that.

She must be skint.

latetothefisting · 22/10/2026 23:57

everyone saying OP is being a rubbish friend, the main thing is the company, perhaps hosting!friend is short of money etc might have a point if hosting!friend was paying for the whole meal.

SHE the one who unilaterally not only changed the agreed plan but downgraded it, but what tips it over from annoying into CF rude territory is that she's still expecting OP and third friend to pay for something they didn't want! Not to mention the fact that it's clearly not enough food for 3 people.

If she'd just said 'Come over mine, I'll make food,' then yes, perhaps it would be mean of OP and third friend to be laughing about what she planned to cook behind her back. But if someone is rude to you first, it's okay to respond to that!

@Teriyt “It’s a c.£20 takeaway for crying out loud, who can’t afford that once in a while.”

quite a lot of people.

Anyway, you’re supposed to have a nice evening with your friend. I didn’t really think it was about the takeaway.

If she’s getting Botox regularly as OP says, she’s not hard up.

mintleavesandthyme · 22/10/2026 19:01

Sorry but I think you’re a horrible friend and just plain ungrateful. This might be a bit disappointing but maybe she can’t afford the takeaway. I’d be grateful for her hosting and being able to spend time with my friends. Maybe take a fun pudding over if you’re that bothered.

Ungrateful for what?? OP is still going to have to pay for the shite pretend curry!

I'm gutted for you. I can just imagine sitting at work on a particularly monotonous or tough day, consoling myself with the thought of a red hot Indian, with fresh naan, a popadom or two and maybe even some sag aloo. Thinking about what main I'd have and really looking forward to it. Only to be told no, it's an Asda fucking ready meal with a longlife naan. CTM too, how bloody boring. I'd be so disappointed.

Busybeemumm · 23/10/2026 00:02

She should have checked if it was ok with everyone. In the grand scheme of things it's more about the catch up than the food though so would be annoyed so would let her know this but wouldn't let it ruin the night or have negative vibes about it.

Yikes giving mean girl vibes. Not the kind of friends I would want to have.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 22/10/2026 19:32

This is me too. When I am having a catch up with friends I don't care what we eat (or don't eat) happy to have crisps and snacks.

Catching up with my friends us what's important to me.

You are coming across very snobby OP.

It’s not “snobby” to want the agreed meal, and not have to pay for something you don’t want.

MN varies between teeny tiny eaters, or cook massive meals from scratch for sporty teens or suddenly supermarket junk is fine, depending on which OP they want to critique 😄

EveryoneUsingOutro · 23/10/2026 00:22

SparkleHorse82 · 22/10/2026 20:00

That is just a phenomenally rude suggestion.

Well it was very rude of the host to change the agreed plan without asking anyone and still expect them to pay!

She’s worse as hosts are supposed to look after their guests.

nam3c4ang3 · 23/10/2026 00:27

You’re being a right fucking cow op. Hth.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 23/10/2026 00:31

I had a friend who did this. No matter what we as a group arranged to do she always found a Wowcher deal or some such which was invariably restrictive and sub-standard. None of us were on the breadline so we invariably said thanks very much and ignored her and carried on with our original plan.

Is your definition of being a good friend laughing at another friend on a separate group chat, if so you have no right commenting on this thread

Trottersup · 22/10/2026 21:51

You don't sound like a very nice person OP. Perhaps she has money issues? Love to know where you can get a takeaway for three for £20 (the amount you suggest).

Edited

And again for the hard of reading, everyone is paying their share …

CrazyMidget · 23/10/2026 00:38

Just say you were really looking forward to a proper Indian and a ready meal isn’t the same, so you’re going to order your own in. She can always keep and eat the food she bought herself. If you get pushback, just say she didn’t check and you wouldn’t have agreed. And if she still pushes bank, just say that an Indian takeaway is a highlight of the week and you’re not forgoing it.

It’s not up to her what you eat. You eat what you want and if she doesn’t like it, tough.

Why do people have so much trouble communicating?!

EveryoneUsingOutro · 23/10/2026 00:40

Netcurtainnelly · 22/10/2026 22:44

Too true. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a wind up anyway.

Asda shite v yummy takeaway.

Do you even have tastebuds if you don’t think this is an issue.
