To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

To those who’ve asked is my friend watching the calories…certainly not. She’s just not fussed on the quality of food as much as the rest of us. Each to their own, but don’t inflict it on others is my view.

We’ve managed to stifle our laughter temporarily and come up with a message which one of my other friends has sent politely suggesting we proceed with the original plan and she finds an alternative use for the ready meals (we stopped short of suggesting the dog, that would be animal cruelty!)

I dont think you are unreasonable for wanting an actual.take away when that was agreed, rather than a ready meal

YABU for making a separate chat about it. If you all agree, put it on the group chat individually and tell her.

OP ; oh thats a shame I was looking forward to getting a <insert curry house> take away, Thanks for getting these, but do you think that will be enough for all of us?

Then others can reply as they wish

We already had a seperate chat.

So she has sent a photo and my friend has worked out it’s 2x each of:

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-main-for-two-chicken-tikka-masala-400g/5542097

and

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-side-for-two-pilau-rice-300g/5542135

Plus a pack of naans

We are howling in a seperate chat 😂😂

We are going to suggest covering the cost and getting a takeaway, she can freeze what she has already got or give it to her dog!

I hope your host friend is in MN, reads this and tells you where to go, how mean of you bitching about it on another chat. who cares that much? It’s not as if all the takeaways in the world are about to shut down, just get one the next night at home.

Wetblanket78 · 22/10/2026 21:44

I was at least expecting it to be the set meals for 2. But no not even an onion bhargi.😂😂😂 The Asda ones are ok I sometimes get them for Christmas eve when I don't want to cook and we would be waiting forever for a takeaway. But given the choice I would pick a proper Indian takeaway.

It depends where from. M and S is probably better than some takeaways.

Was about to say M&s and I d probably ok about it. Anything else, no thanks!

anon4net · 22/10/2026 21:45

Just send a breezy message saying that's so nice of her to offer but you'll stick to the takeaway as you've been looking forward to it all week!

Trottersup · 22/10/2026 21:51

You don't sound like a very nice person OP. Perhaps she has money issues? Love to know where you can get a takeaway for three for £20 (the amount you suggest).

Vickim03 · 22/10/2026 21:51

I wouldn’t be too bothered. Pay your share for it. It would be cheaper than a takeaway.
The main point of the evening is to be together, you are still getting that. You could maybe take a pudding/nibbles if you really wanted. but bigger picture here is the time you spend together…..

Loads of places.

Local indian restaurants near me have 1. Banquet night which us any starter, any main and side and rice or nan for £16.95

Another takeaway has a 12.95 meal deal with starter, main side nan rice and popadum

Laura95167 · 22/10/2026 21:59

Id say oh no thanks for me - ill be ordering from the takeaway we discussed. Ive been looking forward to a proper takeaway since we agreed

BillieWiper · 22/10/2026 22:04

It's so much cheaper and will probably be edible if a bit bland. I'd accept it this once but maybe reiterate how much you really prefer it cooked with their special ovens and flavour/ingredients from the restaurant.

EveryoneUsingOutro · 22/10/2026 21:29

Why would they need to “fall out” like they are in year 6? Confused

OP would be perfectly reasonable to say as given above, she will still order in the curry she fancied.

Prwsumably the hostess can be an adult and accept other people don’t want a supermarket ready meal.

No need for any falling out dramatics.

since they're all being bitches about it in a separate group chat your year six comment was actually spot on! hope the crappy curry lady finds this thread and gets some new mates, takeaway or not

Shopsrshut23 · 22/10/2026 22:16

I'd be well disappointed and have to drown my sorrows in extra wine.

Awkwardisfunny · 22/10/2026 22:18

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:40

No, we’ll have all paid for our own.

Just get a takeaway during the night before she puts the food on and ask if anyone else wants to order. If she says something, just point out that was the original plan and you had a specific meal in mind you'd been looking forward to.

Depending on how good friends you are, you could even joke with her about how weird it was that she unilaterally changed the food plan.

OnYerselfHen · 22/10/2026 21:08

Who was he expecting to cook? Surely not you or DH? Turning up with shopping is bad enough but if he was expecting other people to cook? 🤯

He was going to make it himself but still... We were looking forward to the fish and chips and already told him our plans.

BCBird · 22/10/2026 22:20

PeloMom · 22/10/2026 18:40

I’d reply ‘ I was really looking forward to ….(name of place you initially chose).’ Id prefer to stick to that.’ And see where it goes. I’m sure the rest feel the same way. She’ll learn she can’t make unilateral decisions for a group

This. If she is short of money she could have said and at least you would have had some say in the matter

DrFoxtrot · 22/10/2026 22:23

Any sort of downgrade to an established plan I’ve been looking forward to really disappoints me.

I’ve had local restaurant plans changed in the past to ‘let’s get a takeaway from there’, further changed on the day to ‘I’ll just get something out of the freezer’ 😲. There were vague reasons for the change but I did have to point out that I was actually really looking forward to the original plan.

ruethewhirl · 22/10/2026 22:28

Ugh, YANBU! DH does this and it really annoys me. Supermarket curries are really not the same thing at all. Guaranteed disappointment.

You just sound like a mean girl at this point. Either that or a wind up.

Nottodaybob · 22/10/2026 22:34

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 19:33

There’s more vegan food than legumes and soya.

Rarely in a vegan restaurant is there a legume and soy free meal. If it was home cooked, a veg curry with no tofu or chickpeas in I would be fine. But most rested put protein in and seitan is the only vegan protein I can eat.

Metromayhem · 22/10/2026 22:39

Really weird of your friend to do this. Ready meals are nowhere close to a real takeaway (yes, even M&S, still shitty mass produced factory made food!). I’d tell her thanks but you’re still getting takeaway

Too true. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a wind up anyway.

Yip, it's jumped the shark at:

"To those who’ve asked is my friend watching the calories…certainly not. She’s just not fussed on the quality of food as much as the rest of us. Each to their own, but don’t inflict it on others is my view"

CaffeinatedMum · 22/10/2026 22:49

YANBU to want a take away but YABU to bitch about your friend in a separate what’s app group and start a thread on Mn rather than just telling her yourself.

SinuousTendrils · 22/10/2026 22:51

I'd be miffed.
This has reminded me of a birthday one year when a friend and I had planned to go out dancing. On the day of the outing, friend asked if she could bring mutul (but more her) friend, I of course agreed.
On arrival mutual friend suggested getting a takeaway instead, friend said she was skint and I ended up cooking us a curry. I was miffed.
