To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

Those asda curries are terrible. Processed shite horrible "chicken". They're in no way comparison to a real takeaway curry. Supermarket nan breads are all terrible.

LadyChilli · 22/10/2026 20:24

What a depressing alternative to a takeaway. A couple of mediocre ready meals of her choosing. I'm glad you're still going to get your takeaway, those Asda curries are ok but nowhere near on a par with a proper takeaway. Even the more expensive M&S ones don't come close.

Wewillmeetagainoneday · 22/10/2026 18:47

I'm not disputing that they would want food.
I just dont see an issue with what the hostess has done tbh. But then I'd probably prefer a glass or two of wine and some savoury snacks to a curry any day if I was wanting to sit and chat to friends.

It wasn’t what was agreed, that’s what she’s done wrong. A supermarket ready meal is ok if that’s what you’re expecting, but if you’re expecting to get something lovely from the takeaway then it would be annoying and disappointing.

Hankunamatata · 22/10/2026 20:25

Is she watching what she eats as calories would probably be lower than a takeaway?

HughJarsed · 22/10/2026 20:25

That’s an unacceptable replacement really. I would still go but I would def let her know I was disappointed. And I would expect some kind of explanation for why she unilaterally changed things.

No problem for me. M&S curries are fine. At least they’ll be hot.

I may be in a massive minority but I think takeaways are overrated. They arrive cold or lukewarm at best, cost a bomb, swim in grease, come with a load of packaging that needs binning and give massive indigestion and then dehydration headaches.

I’d genuinely rather cook than have a takeaway.

Only because they're put into the microwave for 4.5 minutes, stirring once. No reason why somebody couldn't do that if a delivery was less than hot (whilst also disposing of the sleeve, the plastic top, the plastic tray and all the other packaging that supermarket food comes with - compared to a paper bag with some foil and some cardboard).

In any case, if we're sharing opinions on the merits of the food itself, I can't think of much worse than a bland ultraprocessed ding dinner that is intended to cater for those who can't cope with the notion of bones or pepper, never mind spices.

So she has sent a photo and my friend has worked out it’s 2x each of:

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-main-for-two-chicken-tikka-masala-400g/5542097

and

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/indian-takeaway/asda-side-for-two-pilau-rice-300g/5542135

Plus a pack of naans

We are howling in a seperate chat 😂😂

We are going to suggest covering the cost and getting a takeaway, she can freeze what she has already got or give it to her dog!

Sounds like this person needs to get some better friends if you are "howling" in a separate chat. If you don't like what she has done, be an adult and talk to her face about it.

MyEasterBonnet · 22/10/2026 20:27

2 curries and 2 rice between you?! Is she dieting and not wanting to have the food but also not wanting to be jealous of a takeaway?

Bridgertonisbest · 22/10/2026 20:28

ASDA!

That's fucking gross and no way comparable to a takeaway!

MrsClatterbuck · 22/10/2026 20:28

Sometimes dh and I have a M&S collection butter chicken curry with Naan bread. Greedy guts that we are we sometimes buy 2. They are nice but that is reflected in the price but last week I had butter chicken curry in an Indian restaurant and boy was it good and the Perwashi naan was to die for.

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 20:28

Either OP has jumped the shark or she’s really just a mean girl.
Laughing in a separate chat is horrible.

MCF86 · 22/10/2026 20:29

It's rude enough to choose someone's dinner and expect them to pay, doing it when you've actually agreed something else is a very weird thing to assume

Wow. Asda chicken curries and no other choice? Tell her you'd set your heart on a king prawn bhuna with onion bargee side, saag alo and mushroom rice.

Just say it!

Agree with this !
supermarket not a patch on a takeaway

AgeingMillennial · 22/10/2026 20:29

She’s definitely going to overcharge you and the friend so she ends up not spending a penny on the food. YANBU

dancingpumpkin · 22/10/2026 20:30

I was wondering if it was Asda, some of their stuff looks authentic but tastes foul. I think i'd say I was really looking forward to a particular dish so will order anyway.

Cherryicecreamx · 22/10/2026 20:31

I think she's being unreasonable to expect you all to be happy with supermarket sub standards without consulting you but expecting you to pay.

You could do that when you’ve finished howling amongst yourselves I suppose.

Or you could just be grown ups that are a bit disappointed but still looking forward to an otherwise really nice evening.

That’s what happens when you change plans without discussing it with people. Subbing a proper takeaway for a nasty supermarket processed ready meal. I would not be up for this tomorrow night

Strangerthanfictions · 22/10/2026 20:34

UbiquitousPistachio · 22/10/2026 18:44

It’s shit because it wasn’t what was agreed plus who knows what she bought from the supermarket? She has taken away everyone’s choice completely. Really selfish of her.

This is a good point it could be all sort of stuff none of you like unless she based it on what you said you wanted from the delicious take away. I would go really light and say on that sounds good, I think I might still opt for the take away as I quite fancied it but you go right ahead with what you picked

TeaCupTinsel · 22/10/2026 20:35

I'd say 'I was looking forward to the takeaway from X place so I'll still be ordering from there, I'm not keen on supermarket curries.'

I wouldn't just accept it and pay for something I don't like/want.

Mummypie21 · 22/10/2026 20:36

I really don't like someone unilaterally changing plans. My father-in-law hates takeaways and if we eat together, he will try us to steer clear of them. For my dh's birthday recently, we all agreed that we'd try the local fish and chip place down our road. We were having it at our house and we were also going to pay for it. However, FIL came with shopping and food from the supermarket, telling us that we were all having what he'd bought instead.

DH still went to get some fish and chips because that was what he wanted for his birthday.

worldshottestmom · 22/10/2026 20:39

Block her for that

Chilly80 · 22/10/2026 20:40

Who serves ready meals to friends 😆

Fizbosshoes · 22/10/2026 20:41

Lots of people seem to be rewriting the story where the friend has spontaneously invited OP and friends over for curry and has bought ready meals because they are too poor to pay for takeaway and OP has been snobby about it

...when what actually happened was....

From the OP a group of friends mutually decided to get a take away from.a particular place and it is this person's turn to host, but each person would choose and pay for their own meal (OP says they take turns so they may have been to everyone else's house multiple times)
