Antisemitism here in the UK is appalling.

I was once a 'Grren' no more due to the hatred Antisemitism in the party.

Schools should recognise antisemitism as distinct form of harm, review says

The government is expected to accept all 27 recommendations made in the review by ex-Ofsted boss, Sir David Bell.

For sure. My ancestors all left Jewish Russia in the 1880s amidst the endless pogrommes. Half went to Poland to be murdered a generation later and half ended up in America. My grandmother spoke Yiddish at home and had stories of running through the non Jewish neighbourhoods after school as the children would throw stones at her. As an adult she wasn’t allowed to join the neighbourhood’s country club - no Jews allowed. This was all before Israel’s creation.

My mum had her stories too. I had pennies thrown at me (better than rocks) and the first time my daughter had a classmate tell her his family wanted her family to die she was 9. A year before October 7th.

The Jews have been expelled from a long list of places. Numbers are confusing as sometimes it was cities or counties or some sort of area that doesn’t exist anymore but it’s certainly a long list any way you count it. Until modern history there were almost always rules about where we could live and how we could work and even sometimes what we could wear. The worst of it pre dates Israel. Today’s excuse is Hamas, yesterday’s was the blood libel, another day’s was the economic failures of a country or the weather or who knows what.

So when you say ‘such a shame your children are frightened because of what Israel is doing in Palestine’ you can replace that with ‘because of the economic collapse of Germany’ or ‘because of the blood you use in the Passover celebration’ or ‘because you read a different book’ and I hear it the same way.

This is ridiculous.
Of course it's horrendous that Jewish people in this country are being targeted for something that is happening thousands of miles away that has nothing to do with them. But the same goes to other way, it's horrendous to say the Palestine cause is a scam when they are being blown to pieces with 22,000 children murdered by Israel. After 9/11, it was the for muslims in this country that were targeted for something they had nothing to do with.

22000 children murder by Hamas actions and vile iwtevts who support Hamas

Therattt · 22/10/2026 00:06

Weirdly, I think the behaviour of "pro-pals" just really reinforces how important it is that Israel exists.

To anyone reading this thread who believes that the antisemitism Jewish children are experiencing in schools today is because of the war in Gaza, I think it’s important to understand that this was happening long before the conflict.
I’m in my forties and I experienced antisemitism at primary school, mostly from other pupils, but also from some teachers. No one seemed to know how to deal with it and nothing was ever done.
The impact was that I hid this part of myself for many, many years. It’s only more recently that I’ve become more open about it. Even now, I’m extremely careful about who I tell.
The war in Gaza didn’t create antisemitism. Sadly, it has provided the latest excuse for people to express their hatred of Jews more openly than we’ve seen in a long time. And to feel justified in doing so. Jewish children were experiencing this decades ago, as I know from personal experience. We can stop treating antisemitism as a problem that can be explained away by Israel.
The number of times I was told as a child to ‘go back to Israel.’ And now funnily enough, the message is the opposite ‘You don’t belong in Israel, you belong in Europe.’

The message has gone full circle back to “You don’t belong anywhere.”

Yes I should have said you belong in Europe (usually a named country that you have no connection to) at best and you don’t belong anywhere at worst.

Blaming the Jewish diaspora in general, and British Jewish children in particular, for the actions of the Israeli government is a mixture of utter stupidity and rampant antisemitism. It is horrifying that Jewish schools, and synagogues ,have to take these precautions. These medieval attitudes bring shame upon the country.

BigWholeBean · 22/10/2026 02:12

I’m in my 40’s. Grew up in a Jewish area. I used to wonder which one of my non Jewish neighbours would hide me with my family when the Holocaust happened again.
I remember when I was in college and I mentioned something about most of my family (grandparents siblings, parents, entire towns) being exterminated by Nazi’s. My classmates looked at me in the weirdest way and I suddenly realised that no, it was not normal to be the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor and to have extermination in my family history.
I had cancer and filled out a genealogy chart that asked for my family history. I dont know, most of my ancestors died of unnatural causes. My high school was dismissed about half an hour later than the non Jewish high school up the road. This was because the students there would hurl abuse at us.
Antisemitism has always existed in England. All my schools, synagogues, events etc had security and gates and high walls.

BigWholeBean · 22/10/2026 02:16

And to the poster who has tried to make a bizarre point about the Israeli flag representing all Jews. The Magen David, the Star of David, has been a Jewish symbol for hundreds and hundreds of years. A quick Google search said that a relief of it was found in a synagogue dating from the 2-3rd century. I’m assuming that when the flag was designed, the star was chosen to represent us as a country as well as being a symbol of our peoplehood.

They do bring shame upon the country and I feel this strongly as a non religious non Jewish English person.

I used to feel proud to be British but I’m not feeling that at the moment with the rise in antisemitism. I feel alarmed at what is happening to British Jews (even children being made to feel unsafe!) and so sorry to those who are experiencing it.

Same here, it stands out as a grave injustice.

Snap to all of that. My ancestors went variously to France or Australia.

Only the Australian ones survived.

I am deeply terrified of where we are at now. And it's utterly disingenuous to say 'Cos Gaza'. Anti semites have always just looked for an excuse. And their useful idiot supporters think they are - like- SO into anti-racism yet are racist to their core.

@Diamond82 and @PurpleThistle7, thank you so much for your contributions.

They're hard to read, but certainly bring it home. The whole Palestinian issue has been weaponised by those who would excuse their antisemitism in other ways, in previous times.
That Jewish people cannot live their lives freely in the UK in the 21st century is shocking.

Yes, @EdithStourton, I remember when news came out about the treatment of Muslims in China, schoolchildren of Chinese descent and heritage weren't routinely bullied and harrassed in British schools.
Funny that.

Indeed.

And when Russia invaded Ukraine I asked my DS1 to make sure that no-one hassled the Russian kid in their class as it worried me, and I felt if someone did I could alert the school so they could deal with it.

Turns out, thankfully, no one did.

Compare this thread to anti (illegal) immigration threads. Spot the difference. Loads of posters claiming racism where none exists. Antisemitism is an uncomfortable concept for different reasons. Not even 8 pages worth of contributions here.

If you are saying there is no racism against immigrants, I couldn’t disagree more.

I was assigned to attend the EDI committee at my work (at a university) and the first meeting was about how important it was to stand by the students protesting at graduations as it was a huge EDI issue and we need to support our minority students. I jumped in to say I felt 100% not supported at work and would be genuinely frightened to be surrounded by that in the tight quarters of a graduation ceremony. If my kids were graduating they’d be angry or upset. And I am very obviously a minority here so who is supporting me?

I then said ‘this meeting is damaging my mental health and I don’t want to engage further. I’m done.’ Left the online meeting and refused to go to any further ones. I have no time for self-righteous hate marchers.

I’ve joined a nationwide group in Australia dedicated to combatting antisemitism. I’m 48 years old and have never joined anything in my life- no political groups, no casual book clubs, nothing.

A commentator wrote recently that if you ever have wondered what you would have done during the rise of the Nazis, it’s whatever you are doing right now.

Gosh that quote is sobering.

It's a horrific mixture of ignorance, band wagon jumping and prejudice.
I don't doubt that there are sincere people who are horrified at what has happened in Gaza. I think all decent people are. There's a tv advert for a charity that I can hardly bear to look at. It's tragic. However, that the end result is this huge upsurge in antisemitism in the UK is shocking and unacceptable.

Oct 7th was a turning point for me. The next day, people wearing Palestinian flags, with faces painted, waving banners....celebrating.
Celebrating the rape, murder and kidnapping of innocent people, including babies and the elderly. Then the first march was organised. It happened straight away. It was organised, and I was absolutely sickened.

Yes, though it started the same day - people celebrating in the streets around the world. Weeping with joy about the atrocities committed against Jews.

it was repulsive.

They got killed in a war that Hamas triggered when they decided to attack, massacre, kidnap and use sexual violence against ordinary people - mainly civilians, some children - on 7/10/23.

MenopauseSucks · 22/10/2026 08:48

David Baddiel visited his old school & was shocked by the security measures that had been brought in since he attended as a child.
That day, the school was carrying out its usual security drill, the sort seen in American schools, the land of unrestricted guns.
The security drills that Jewish schools have to carry out to keep children & staff safe.
The security drills that you wouldn’t expect to see in a UK school.
The camera team weren’t allowed to film the drill for fear of broadcasting information that could be used against the school.

Absolutely disgusting to celebrate that. Would it happen to any other country suffering an attack on that scale or any other group in society? I don't think so.

No indeed.

And Israel did not 'retaliate' for some days, and the marches and the gleeful joy at Jewish deaths had already been celebrated for days by then by some in the West.

Hamas knew what they were doing. They knew an attack on that scale would trigger a response. Yet somehow this murderous death cult (and believe me, Jews are just the start, Hamas wants the death of everyone who does not adhere to their warped version of Islam to die) won the propaganda war. HOw did that happen? How did these murderers become the darlings of the thick and vocal?
