Adults at petting zoos/farms/kids days out

1000 replies

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 12:42

Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in grown adults (many in late teens and 20s) going on days out aimed at kids/young families? I’m finding it increasingly irritating - small children having to queue behind grown adults to stroke rabbits or see tanks of fish.

(Exception where there is clearly a disability at play)

We’re on holiday and went to an animal based attraction today. DS was free, we (and every other adult) paid €30 each, why should he get priority over any part of it?? There were lots of families there but also some groups of adults and plenty of couples without kids.

Ps.. you should go on the teacups OP. Life is for living. Be carefree, be silly, you’ll be long dead.

I would rather be dead than get on a teacup ride lol

Because adults who take joy from little kids are arseholes, there I said it 🤷‍♀️

You are misplacing your anger.

The petting zoo decides how many people to let in. They were happy with the numbers, which means that they considered the queueing times acceptable.

The petting zoo decided they want adult customers, so either they actually want them or just need them to boost the numbers and keep running.

The adults aren't jumping over the fence, they are paying customers the same way you are. If you don't like the zoo's policy, don't go there.

What ‘all sorts of things’ have I criticised?

Adults going to what you consider children's activities. You've created a thread about it. This one.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 19:47

Ah we’ve reached the ‘accuse op of being angry’ stage! With respect this is the most boring one so I’m clocking out to read now. Enjoy your outrage ☺️ DH has loved the replies (particularly the grey house one!).

No idea what age your children are, but what if they are older? 7 or 8? Should they then step back and let the younger ones do it?
If there are limited spaces then surely that's an issue to take up with the farm and to ask them to repeat sessions.
Would it be less of an issue if the queue was all children and your children had to wait behind other children?

They should queue… behind other kids

No adults did this when I was younger. They watched, like adults should!

Who made you the boss of “should” ? Maybe stroke a few animals and you might be a bit less miserable and uptight. It’s also good for your little darlings to learn to wait their turn, and that they are not the centre of the universe.

If you can’t see why depriving a little kid the chance of meeting a lamb is an arsehole move, then you basically have zero sense of what being an adult means.

I think everyone on here is pretending they ‘don’t know what the problem is’ - or at least, I hope they’re pretending.

No!! I think most people think you are on the wind up!!

PrettyPickle · 19/10/2026 19:54

@ExtraHotDoubleShot Ooh and OP, I also feel the need to share with you that when I go to the sea side, with my husband only, I roll my trousers up and paddle, chasing the waves and if there are donkeys on the beach, I run up to them and have a cuddle with the donkey owners approval. And the donkeys love it as they are pack animals. Its a win-win. And I still wade around rock pools looking for interesting stuff!

And the kids, if there are any around, love it! Its called a shared experience and it shows kids that there are some things that are OK at any age.

And if you have a problem with that, well, I suspect that the majority of people would rather be me than you!

Yes, I suspect so. I doubt very much that all this vituperative judgement is genuine.

Why can't the adults meet the lamb though? Kids don't have to be treated like little kings and get priority over adults. Who is paying the entrance fee anyway?

She's had her hot choccy and has gone to bed now. She won't be back 😭

I’m lying in bed with the radio on drinking a hot chocolate. Your projection is wild!

Isn't it child's bedtime and drink?

GorgeousLife223 · 19/10/2026 17:53

Omg; there are some right creeps play Warhammer. Must say though there’s also some godly like creatures. There’s a guy who I’ve seen playing warhammer (we call him a battle star galactica b**tard) while we do our yoga class and his got the most perfect hair; and well groomed beard. It’s hard to get an ick when his figure is so gorgeous. When I say figure I mean his Magnus Calgar limited edition in ultramarine colours.

Surely you mean Marneus Calgar no? 🫢

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 19/10/2026 20:00

TBH, last time we fed the lambs (10+ years ago) an adult needed to be with the children because the lambs are crazy strong. You might get to sit with one on your lap, then 3 others will come and try and push that one away. The farm ee used to go to didn't have a limit on numbers to feed either. You just hoped you could find an empty bottle to get filled up. The unwritten rule was feed 1 bottle full and pass the bottle on. Of course no one knew if you'd had a turn already though.

Sorry OP I still find you churlish. You may have a point if its "kids corner" but that is it. It strikes me as a rather odd attitude.

Calling something "a childish activity" is not the same as saying "children enjoy it". Plenty of activities are enjoyed by children and adults alike. If your argument is that adults who enjoy petting zoos have "failed to grow up", then logically you'd have to apply the same standard to: zoos, aquariums. Lego, model railways, theme parks, Disney films, Harry Potter, comic conventions, colouring books, & feeding ducks

Most adults draw the line wherever their own interests happen to lie. I'd argue that one mark of maturity is being comfortable enough to enjoy things without worrying whether someone else thinks they're "age appropriate". Children often worry about looking grown up. Secure adults tend to be less bothered. There's also a difference between: enjoying a petting farm because you like animals, and wanting to be treated like a child. An adult having a cuddle with a rabbit isn't pretending to be six years old. They're interacting with an animal. The rabbit doesn't care whether the person is 8, 18 or 80.

Personally I don't go to petting zoos because I kidnap passing dogs for cuddles and I get lots of them every day. I find it very therapeutic and restful. If that makes me childish - tough, I can live without your approval.

What I find interesting is that many people who make the "adults acting like kids" argument are perfectly happy spending an afternoon: watching football, collecting memorabilia, gaming, queueing for the latest Marvel film, discussing horse racing form, building a railway layout in the shed, all of which could equally be dismissed as "childish" if someone wanted to be uncharitable.

Personally, I think there's a great deal of joy lost when adults decide that affection for animals, curiosity, playfulness and simple pleasures are things to be outgrown. I'm in my 60's and on the cuddly side but last year I frightened the living daylights out of a group of parents waiting at the bottom of a tunnel slide attached to a castle when I shot out, because they were expecting a kid and they all cracked out laughing. As C.S. Lewis famously put it "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness."

That, to me, is a much more mature outlook than worrying whether stroking an alpaca looks grown-up enough. 🦙😊

Edited

I went to the Sooty Show by myself a few years ago. Perhaps @ExtraHotDoubleShot thinks I have issues🙄

Awwww, it's so nice that your DH is enjoying the thread. 😊 It's lovely that the great women of Mumsnet have been entertaining him.

Has he been chuckling a lot?

I bet he plays Warhammer and lots of video games, and goes to petting zoos when you're not around. 😆

Yes, sitting on a bed drinking hot chocolate is something my 7 year old niece would do.

Because it encourages them to infantilise themselves. We’re adults for gods sake 😂

You seem like a right old miserable cow. Go pet a rabbit and cheer up love.

I’m disabled and work with small kids so I’m pretty tired and in bed by 8pm usually. Alcohol flares my condition and is actually dangerous for me.

And yet people who are just mentally tired (not mentally ill, just need a lift) and want to let off steam having a cuddle with a furry animal isn't allowed to help them? That's a bit one rule for you and another rule for us.
