Adults at petting zoos/farms/kids days out

Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in grown adults (many in late teens and 20s) going on days out aimed at kids/young families? I’m finding it increasingly irritating - small children having to queue behind grown adults to stroke rabbits or see tanks of fish.

(Exception where there is clearly a disability at play)

Having had my children over 17 years, it's definitely changed a lot in terms of more childless adults going to places that traditionally were more aimed at children. For example, when we first started going to Centre Parcs 17 years ago it was very wholesome, simple and family orientated. But I wouldn't go there now as the market has changed and I don't want to be around the people that frequent it now.

Look at all the adults that go to Disney with no children, and are happy for little kids to be waiting their turn while grown adults preen and pose with the characters for photos.

I'd feel very silly making children wait to pet a rabbit while I, a woman in my 40s, sat and had my turn. But each to their own and they are perfectly within their rights to do so.

I do think adults have become more childish. MIL and her friends have become quite strange in recent years, going to escape rooms and theme parks. And yet 20 years ago she had much more adult pursuits like watercolouring and going to Chelsea flower show. It's peculiar. I wonder if people are regressing as a stress response to life.

Strange?

or maybe they’ve just now got the confidence to do the things they actually WANT to do, rather than the “naice” hobbies that old fashioned thinkers like you think they “should” do.

My friends and I in our 50s love nothing more than our annual trip to a Rage Room to smash stuff. Fuck watercolours, give me a sledgehammer. It’s brilliant.

Op isn’t talking about science museums though is she? Shes talking about petting zoo’s with little rides for children little tea cups twirling, tractor and trailer rides, little sand pit areas etc.Op isn’t talking about science museums though is she? Op included zoos and farms and 'family days out'. At our local farm/zoo there's a massive zip line that you have to be an adult to use. An adult is part of a family.

Adults petting animals isnt infantising them. Infants dont pet animals as a childish thing.

We let children pet animals to learn about gentleness, the environment, the cycle of life, relationships, the emotional connection to other living beings. Its an educational thing for children.

Not a childish one for adults

love this.

Ok, a few people agree, so I’m not completely alone in thinking this 😂

There are loads of places people think are unsuitable for kids - pubs, clubs, the theatre, art galleries, certain films, the gym, other sports… which I agree with.. but a few sad adults are crashing the kids days out so they can hold a hamster. Sorry I stand by it!

Children should definitely experience theatre and art galleries! Partly so they learn how to behave in these environments but mostly so they can enjoy and experience art and music!

If adults aren't becoming more childish then why is there such a big market for hideous pyjamas with the Grinch or Mickey whatever on them, in full array of adults sizes? Can't just be teens, the sizes go too big.
Again, not saying it's wrong, but my grandparents wouldn't have made such fools of themselves. They dressed with dignity.

Maybe they would have loved some comfy, fun jammies with pictures of their favourite film stars, if they had been around.
You can’t speak for what they were really thinking, rather than how they behaved within societal constraints.
Maybe they did lots of fun stuff that you just never saw.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 13:40

Why is anything sad? Because it’s for kids, or indicates an adult with issues tbh - in this case a childish and slightly selfish mindset

And once again, as it’s just not getting through, animals are NOT just for kids.

Honestly OP, you do sound so rigid and bound by some arbitrary rules that confine your life. Maybe mocking makes you feel more powerful but really, it’s just showing you can’t think for yourself.

You’re the one coming across as “sad”, not us.

As this thread is nearly full...
Quick here's a bunny.
No don't look. DON'T LOOK.
You're an adult.

DS's university did the same with dogs.

A lot of students hugely miss their family dog when they leave home for the first time.

We took ours with us when we visited DC (we were staying elsewhere, checked no one had allergies when we met DC in the communal garden area outside). Practically everyone in the Student Hall tumbled out to meet and fuss over our dog - so many said they missed their dog at home! Our dog was in heaven with all the attention!

I'm Scotland they are a fairly recent thing here, like the last 20 years maybe.

OK.. Even when I was a child in the 60s we used to go to the donkey sanctuary to stroke the donkeys. There's a working farm in Sheffield which is also an educational charity and has been going since the 70s. I used to volunteer conducting school groups, young carers and some adult groups so I got my lamb cuddling in legitimately 😆.

Drinking alone, cycling in lycra, assembling furniture, corporate away days, calling HMRC, picking up a prescription, relationship councelling, going to currys to buy a new fridge.

Hahaha brilliant!

What's wrong with Warhammer?
Obviously it's not going to be to everyone's taste but it's a perfectly normal and regular hobby.

Isn’t Henry Cavill, sex on legs, into Warhammer? Grin

Have you been to a petting zoo recently? They can be really big without a children’s little tea cups ride in sight. If there is a children’s area, it’s not the main attraction.

Our local petting zoo has alpacas, bearded dragons, water dragons, snakes, geckos, pythons, scorpions, tarantulas, ferrets, tortoises, owls etc, as well as the usual rabbits, hamsters, pygmy goats etc.

Why should adults be denied the joys of these animals simply because you and OP resent your children having to wait?

Haven't read all this, but I do feel sorry for people who have forgotten what it's like to be a child. To wonder at the little things in life. A dewdrop sparkling in the sun, a wild flower growing in the crack in the pavement, looking at the night sky, petting an animal, getting a fit of the giggles. I might be nearly 80 in years, but there's a very active 8 year old still inside me.

I hope I never lost that spark of joy either.

There was zoos and stuff but I do think Farm Parks are fairly recent.

But you know what I'm missing myself at the thought of someone telling David Attenborough that animals are just for children 😂

If I pay my money I'm stroking a rabbit.

'One rabbit? One rabbit for all these kids going in & out? Jesus Christ! How many pats can one rabbit take?' (sorry, had to be done 🤣 iykyk)

I know 😂 not lost on me that the repeat outrage posters are clearly not working today

This again just shows your limited rigid thinking. A huge percentage of the population do not work a M-F, 9-5.

I’m self-employed and work mostly evenings. So what if I'm on MN during the day, during the week?

It’s a childish activity. It seems to be in the wider picture of adults acting like kids.

What about my inner child?

Getting ratioed to fuck on an AIBU poll is also ironic because @ExtraHotDoubleShot is on another live thread where her pet peeve is posters who don’t accept when they are told they are being unreasonable. Her post is first on the thread and there are hundreds of posts.

I think she has quite a few pet peeves. Wonder if they all have to queue up and wait their turn behind whichever her favourite topic of the day is. And really, as such a mature know-it-all, she shouldn't have pet peeves. A pet sounds far too childish for her. I suspect she is simply a peevish poster.

Newname26 · 21/10/2026 12:15

With the voice of David Attenborough, "...as the lama looks carefully at the camera, as he considers, who is going to clap him next"

Hahaha, I didn’t even think to make a pet peeve pun. This so why I’ll never be a comedian 🤣

Yes, she is petulantly peevish 🤣

Omg just noticed the pet pun in petulant too.

This really is the thread that keeps on giving.
