AIBU: It’s a vegan one

We have a work event scheduled for just before Christmas. All staff are invited along with their spouses and children. There will be food, Santa, games, etc. It sounds like a lot of fun. I am quite new to the company. I asked the organizer if our vegan family would be catered for and she said she “would try”. AIBU to be a little annoyed at this?

We have been vegan for a long time. I don’t talk about it unless it comes up in conversation or, as is the case here, we have been invited to an event. We are always grateful when people cater to us, but most of the time they don’t bother.

AIBU to just not go? It would be a shame because it sounds like a lot of fun, but if the organizer can’t be bothered to lay on a few bits of vegan food, then I don’t feel that my family and I are welcome.

AIBU?

I disagree that being vegan is now mainstream, it isn't. I see veganism as like being a different religion- you have to go to a different house of worship, you should not expect all houses to cater for your beliefs.

MsWinkleWoman · 19/10/2026 13:50

She said she would try. It’s an external company doing the catering so they will ask about any dietary requirements. Surely you just follow up with her to confirm?

Bikergran · 19/10/2026 14:03

FiveMetresUp · 19/10/2026 11:36

And what message does that send to my kids?

That some people are pricks. That work often isn't inclusive or suportive. That sometimes you need to take the initiative and sort out your own needs because precious few other people will. All valuable life lessons.

What?

Houmous is vegan
Salad is vegan
Samosas are vegan

Get out of here with your nonsense, honestly

I'm not vegan but I happily eat vegan food. And your analogy is poor as religion and belief are protected from discrimination and people should be catered for!

Kipperandarthur · 19/10/2026 14:18

The caterers will have no problem providing some vegan options in this day and age.

So in your analogy, "all houses of worhsip' are 'all catering companies' and you wouldn't expect that they would all be able to provide vegan food if asked?

Really? There may be a few that wouldn't be able to come up with much, but most would.

That's a seriously pathetic attempt, try harder.

What a shame about the food waste. And so easily avoided by simply asking how many people want vegan food, and then catering accordingly. Very poor management.

Easy in theory but not that easy in practice at an informal event where attendance is optional and you have no idea how many people actually will turn up.

I imagine that an event like that has a high risk of food waste anyway.

Higher education. Anything remaining was taken away by students that did attend. Except the vegan stuff. That was always left on the table.

MookieCat · 19/10/2026 14:50

I think some people view 'vegan food' as something strange and hard to source, which is quite odd. I've just had a totally 'vegan' lunch of jacket potato, dairy free spread and baked beans with a side salad at a local cafe.

Guacamole, hummus, crudites etc are all vegan. Our local pizza place does a cheese-less vegetarian pizza that they don't even advertise as 'vegan' just dairy free. Jus roll is mostly vegan and last year I made vegan pigs in blankets at Christmas time using Richmond sausages.

I belong to a social group that has differing food needs amongst our members due to religious requirements. So every gathering we just make it all vegan as it's easier. (Not vegetarian, because one of us has an anaphylactic allergy to dairy so we just do a blanket 'vegan' spread).

As many PPs have pointed out, any half-way decent caterer will know how to provide vegan options. It's not that hard.

Maddy70 · 19/10/2026 14:54

Just bloody ask what the vegan options are ? I don't understand people being so wet . Put it in writing via an nice email

Exactly. Lots of people eat vegan food daily without even thinking about it. Beans on toast for example!!

Most people would butter the toast, though.

A lot of spreads are non dairy without even realising. Another example of people eating vegan.
Personally I would not want butter if I was putting my beans on my toast. Same with any spread.. eg jam

When I was at uni a few decades ago I took my bf to a vegan restaurant as I wanted to try something different (as a vegetarian). It was disgusting slop like bilge tbh and my meat eating bf was horrified!! I think that’s how people think of vegan food

in reality it’s not of course but some people aren’t willing to try

the only thing o can’t bear is vegan cheese. I would rather go without

(and I’m with pp - butter doesn’t need to go with everything!)

I agree re vegan cheese. But at Xmas I get" cheese" from.la fauxmongerie or Kinda. They are both nut based not coconut oil and are lovely....but expensive . A nice treat tho!
I had a recipe for a vegan cheese ball once...it was delicious.

Read my first post, 5218gap’s response, and then my second post. The one you quoted. If you are still struggling ask again.

You surprise me. At similar events I've attended things like spring rolls, samosas, onion bhaji, hummous and bread, crisps, rice and pasta salads etc always went down well. Perhaps they were just providing the wrong things.

Some people do have really unpleasant 'issues' with people who have different dietary requirements or are particular in any way about what they will or won't eat. I think they often have low self-esteem and see somebody else's choices for them as a criticism of themselves and their own choices - whether to do with diet, clothes, hobbies or pretty much anything.

I think there are also a lot who see food as either 'normal food' or 'vegan food' and don't see why they should have to bother about providing both, especially when non-vegans are in the vast majority and won't like/want 'vegan food', so it will just go to waste - without realising that there is a huge crossover of food that is routinely enjoyed by omnivores and vegans.

I am gluten intolerant. A school I worked at for four years did not even once provide gluten free food. They just found the whole thing incomprehensible and baffling. I am quite assertive but it just gets depressing after a while.

PearPeer · 19/10/2026 16:59

Elbowpatch · 19/10/2026 11:19

I used to organise work events with food. There was a policy that 10% of the food provided had to be suitable for vegans. Most of it ended up in the bin. Sometimes all of it.

I honestly do not fathom this. Again, I think it must be regional. Unless they're labelling it as vegan which can put people off?

Mostly, I am told what is vegan and by the time I get to it it is all gone.

BerryTwister · 19/10/2026 13:39

@AlwaysExtraHot it’s a Christmas party. It’s not life and death. I think it’s petty to flounce about it and deprive her kids of an experience she’s said they’d enjoy.

It's even more petty for the organisers not to order vegan food when they know vegans are coming.

NiftyKoala · 19/10/2026 17:16

I can't imagine your family will be the only vegas. NBU at all. I'd think they'd do this automatically. Sounds like she is the one BU.

I'm fully aware what vegan food is,the fact there are some things you happen to like, and you have never had proper samosa is neither here nor there.
Restaurants are not forced to give religious specific choices, so l have no idea what you are talking about, not providing for every possible belief ,or vegans is not discrimination it is essential if anyone ever wants to make a profit, you are talking nonsense.
