To think this person was trying to hint at something

I've name changed because if I am being paranoid I don't want abuse.

I recently bought an advent calendar for my child that wasn't obviously Christmas themed. I see lots of people using it to countdown Chanukah and I wanted to do the same. I thought the entire calendar was so cool that I reached out to thank the creators for such a wonderful product. Their email reply back was quite nice but then in their last paragraph they wrote:
Last week a Muslim mother wrote to tell me that her family would be using our calendar as a countdown for Ramadan :) and to me that confirms a really nice thing - that it can be used to count down to any celebration!

The company is Spanish and so I assume the owner is too. It's the smiley face. I have nothing against Muslims, but I wonder if the person wrote it to hint - see, they're just like you, don't harbour any bad feelings. Or even, trying to put me off their company?

Is it me, or just why would they even write that?

Thank you, I really appreciate this x

I know that not enough posters here either know people from a similar background or are from a similar background. And ultimately we just don't shout loud enough so you can see how the poll has gone how it has

Should Christians who are on this site object to you using an Advent calendar in an inappropriate manner?

Happyd · Yesterday 21:19

Ilikesundays · Yesterday 20:23

The smiley face only means they are happy people of all faiths are enjoying using their calendar. It wouldn’t have occurred to me that they were trying to imply anything hostile.

💯 this

The poll has gone how it has because the vast majority of commenters are rational thinking beings.

I think you're being ridiculous, looking for bad intent where there is none.

Ilovelurchers · Yesterday 21:19

The only way I can understand your distress here is that you are offended that they are conflating Judaism with Islam in some way.

But you keep insisting that's not the case and that you have no negative feelings towarss Islam.

If that's the case, there is absolutely nothing at all to dislike or resent in this message. If you are feeling upset about things like this, I wonder if you are suffering from paranoia? It may be worth speaking to someone about this. It's easy for these kinds of feeling to spiral quite quickly, and you can become really quite unwell.

Look after yourself OP.

(Or admit you are Islamaphobe if you are).

There is someone who has voted that I'm not being unreasonable so my thought process is at least understandable to someone (who I assume is of a similar background to me and therefore appreciates where I'm coming from)

Or they just pressed the wrong one. I’ve managed to do it after one too many Gin

I’d go to the Daily Mail if I were you. They’ll probably use it as their lead story.

gogogwen · Yesterday 21:22

I'm not an islamophobe.

I appreciate everyone's response in the sense that I'm glad it's an overthink and that there isn't something behind it. And I also appreciate those PPs who are saying they get why I might be anxious.

I think recent world events have made the point for you, you’re probably okay on that front. And perhaps this is the post you were hoping for to make your actual post?

Just why would they mention Muslim out of all the faiths. I was just wondering if they're trying to be antagonising or that they might not like Jewish people (because of Spain's stance) and discourage me from using their brand.

Umm what? I think they explained really clearly why they mentioned Muslim. Because last week a Muslim mum wrote to them, and they thought that was great and they’re happy to share it.

this is an enormous overthink. Do you honestly not have a million other things to do more urgently.

The OP could point mournfully at her advent calendar.

I can appreciate why you got there in your thinking. It must be odd feeling on edge all the time, but I think you let the horrible people win if you think everyone is as such.

I would just read it as just a nice message without any deeper meaning.

Hope your DC enjoys the calendars x

WeCanAskandAsk · Yesterday 21:30

You’re being ridiculous.
its also very offensive to suggest they are being antisemitic. It’s the old conflation of anti Israeli with antisemitism. The Spanish Government has quite rightly criticised what the Israeli Government is doing. That doesn’t make them, or the advent calendar company anti Jewish.

I wondered if this thread was taking the mick bit this really confirms it

Dandeloosha · Yesterday 21:33

So it’s traditionally a Christian thing, but people of other faiths enjoy it as a countdown to a religious festival. You wrote to tell her about how you were using it for yours, and recently they received a similar email from a Muslim who was doing the same thing as you and using it to count down to a religious festival.

I think it’s lovely that people, regardless of their faith, can use it to celebrate festivals that are important to them. It sounds wonderful. Do you have a link?

FountainCourted · Yesterday 21:34

You are actually causing more damage than you realise OP. There was a thread earlier today that mentioned the Campaign Against Semitism using someone saying that Netanyahu should be dead as an example of antisemitism. Now there’s you saying that someone referring to a Muslim in an email to you is also antisemitic.

If you report this to the CST, it will likely be marked as another example of antisemitism.

By claiming these matters are something they’re not, it is people like you that mean real antisemitism is ignored. How can people and organisations crack down on antisemitism when it seems that anything that offends someone Jewish is considered antisemitic.

A non problem. They are just being descriptive and telling it as it is. Sharing happy news that families from different faith groups are using it.

The 3 biggest faiths are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Advent calendars are generally a Christmas thing, so no point them replying to tell you people use it for that, so it leaves Ramadan really.

I get that. FWIW I'm not a supporter of Netanyahu or what he's doing but I shouldn't have to say that to defend myself. It was a genuine thought I had, I'm happy to be wrong, and like I said, I was expecting all the hate hence the NC for the post

Because it actually happened and why would they lie?

WiddlinDiddlin · Yesterday 21:40

WTAF?

I send slightly waffley emails to people and mention actual things that happened where relevant - so maybe, just maybe...

this person DID get an email from a Muslim family using their product last week and that is why they mentioned it?!

No other reason, no hidden agenda, certainly no hint, just a relevant event.

You need to get a grip, honestly, I'd order a whole sackful of grips...

RowNine · Yesterday 21:40

WitsEndFFS · Yesterday 21:02

Huh. I’m really surprised no one understands the anxiety of OP. I’m not convinced the email is ill intentioned, but I can see how OP would read it that way. The climate at the moment is very adverse towards Jewish people. Political messaging is everywhere.

Correction - the climate at the moments is adverse to Israel for obvious reasons. To conflate Israel with the wider Jewish pppulation is itself antisemitic.

I haven’t seen any hate? I have noticed a majority of posters suggesting that you may be looking for meaning in quiet an innocent sounding email.
