To think this person was trying to hint at something

I've name changed because if I am being paranoid I don't want abuse.

I recently bought an advent calendar for my child that wasn't obviously Christmas themed. I see lots of people using it to countdown Chanukah and I wanted to do the same. I thought the entire calendar was so cool that I reached out to thank the creators for such a wonderful product. Their email reply back was quite nice but then in their last paragraph they wrote:
Last week a Muslim mother wrote to tell me that her family would be using our calendar as a countdown for Ramadan :) and to me that confirms a really nice thing - that it can be used to count down to any celebration!

The company is Spanish and so I assume the owner is too. It's the smiley face. I have nothing against Muslims, but I wonder if the person wrote it to hint - see, they're just like you, don't harbour any bad feelings. Or even, trying to put me off their company?

Is it me, or just why would they even write that?

Also just because you have taken offence does not mean offence was meant and it’s pretty unkind to assume she is a bad actor just because she’s Spanish

It's more than unkind.
OP is xenophobic.

Just why would they mention Muslim out of all the faiths. I was just wondering if they're trying to be antagonising or that they might not like Jewish people (because of Spain's stance) and discourage me from using their brand.

You are literally looking for reasons to accuse a company of being anti semitic. Honestly OP, this is ridiculous and you are being very paranoid.

It's more than unkind.
OP is xenophobic.

Also I think maybe islamophobic.

Imagine if someone had taken similar offence to a Jewish person using the same calendar. Or a black person. The mere mention of the characteristic has caused such upset.

all quite uncomfortable reading really.

AutumnClouds · Yesterday 20:53

I’m not Jewish but have many sanctimonious friends and can definitely see that reading of it. I don’t think you can know… unless you send an email as a Muslim woman and see if you get the same kind of response back mentioning you. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there was an asymmetry. Which wouldn’t necessarily even mean conscious intent behind the email to you, but is part of the context of why it could feel needly.

aquafrom · Yesterday 20:54

WTF??

aquafrom · Yesterday 20:56

Not in the spirit of mumsnet, reported. I know not a single Jewish person who'd think this or say what Op did. I love the Jewish community (non Jew here) this sounds like bullshit to me.

MellowSubmarine · Yesterday 20:57

gogogwen · Yesterday 20:29

That it was a nice email to receive and reading emails like this make it all their hard work all the more worthwhile

So they sent a perfectly pleasant email response to you, but they mention a Muslim so you think that they must be antisemitic, particularly because they’re Spanish?

stillhiding1990 · Yesterday 20:58

How did the seller know you’re Jewish?

Thank you, I really appreciate this x

I know that not enough posters here either know people from a similar background or are from a similar background. And ultimately we just don't shout loud enough so you can see how the poll has gone how it has

What do you mean

'we don't shout loud enough?'

CatesandAle · Yesterday 21:01

I don’t think you’re BU OP, it’s possible that it was a totally random comment but I’ve also noticed that some Christians seem to consider it their god-given duty to bring up Islam whenever Judaism is mentioned. I think in their mind it somehow equates to doing something useful for the people of Gaza. Bit of a reach, but there we are.

I think in certain quarters unfortunately we are in a time when just allowing something Jewish to be mentioned without bringing up Islam is seen as equivalent to saying you want Gazan babies to be bombed.

A lot of people on this thread choosing to be wilfully clueless about that fact.

Please do try to read my post properly. I don't think the email was in any way anti-Semitic. I do, however, understand that the OP is very probably feeling very much under pressure at the moment (as many many Jewish people are) and due to this has read more into the email than the suppliers really meant.

Actually whatever OPs game is I don't think it's pleasant either way. I did your post correctly. I don't think she should be being encouraged in anyway.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Yesterday 21:02

I vote YABU because you used the phrase 'reached out'.

You 'reached out' because "the entire calendar was so cool". You've seen the entire calendar? What ya doing opening the doors this early?

WitsEndFFS · Yesterday 21:02

Huh. I’m really surprised no one understands the anxiety of OP. I’m not convinced the email is ill intentioned, but I can see how OP would read it that way. The climate at the moment is very adverse towards Jewish people. Political messaging is everywhere.

KidsDoBetter · Yesterday 21:08

Are you quite well???

Very little of this adds up.

It does seem a bit of an odd thing for them to mention.

There is someone who has voted that I'm not being unreasonable so my thought process is at least understandable to someone (who I assume is of a similar background to me and therefore appreciates where I'm coming from)

I voted YANBU because I clicked the wrong button....This is the hugest bloody overthink

Edenmum2 · Yesterday 21:12

It’s just you

PollyBell · Yesterday 21:13

Paranoid is putting it mildly, to start with maybe it is not all about you?

Ivegotonehandinmypocket · Yesterday 21:14

I think you’re making a big deal out of nothing.

Wow, you’re overthinking massively.

You can go back and change it by clicking on the other option (it’s just not purple anymore).

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 21:16

All she was saying was that all religions can use the calendar.
I don't understand what the issue is or how you can think that she is hinting at anything other than advertising her company.
Why would she try and put you off her company and why would saying Muslim families use it too put you off anyway?

RedSheep26 · Yesterday 21:17

Paranoid is the least of it. This is both xenophobic and Islamophobic. There is nothing “antagonising” about mentioning the existence of Muslim customers unless you are anti-Muslim.
