To make a complaint that at an awards ceremony at school, the head teacher commented on every single girl, that got an award looks, yet didn't say one word regarding a single boys looks?

I mean I feel ungrateful but it made me feel so uncomfortable,so it was a special assembly that parents attended where one boy and one girl from each class wo an award for the previous year

the head that's usually pretty good in general, yet in every mini speech he gave about the children, every single girl had some sort of comment about being gorgeous...just made me rage
Alongside all the other comments about how hard working they are, their good values like kindness etc yet there wasn't one single comment regarding any of the boys looks

It's just so insidious and depressing

Several people on here have expressed shock and suggested you take some action, but you seem set against that?

Well I'm actually heartened by the vote count,
but it's gonna make me feelbad complaining as, I believe it was well intended and designed to actually boost them up

Gorgeous here could mean lovely. As in, nothing to do with looks at all
I've just picked up my eldest, her early 20s teacher in a working class school in Grimsby, said she'd had a gorgeous day

Yeah I would call someone gorgeous if they were lovely and kind.

I would call someone beautiful if I were talking about their appearance.

If this happened, it would be helpful to have an example of what was actually said. Very hard to judge. Things like ‘gorgeous’ and ‘beautiful’ don’t necessarily mean about looks.

I already have and I'm just repeating myself over and over at this point...

Well if the comments end in and she's absolutely gorgeous....

Surely that's commenting on looks ..?
That's how I'd take that

Nope. If I call someone gorgeous it’s because they are kind and lovely. It’s nothing at all to do with their looks.

And it would be purely coincidental that it was all the girls and none of the boys?

But he's not there to boost their egos or to teach children that girls should welcome his comments on their appearance. It's really out of line with how teachers are supposed to behave. He should know that.

MozzieFreeZone · Yesterday 15:57

I'd take the word 'gorgeous' to be a comment on looks, not being kind and lovely. And when is the #bekind going to stop being aimed at young girls?

sittingonabeach · Yesterday 15:57

What other descriptors did he use, or was ‘gorgeous’ used all the time for girls? Did he say anything about behaviour for the winning boys?

Holidaymodeon · Yesterday 15:58

I’ve heard some absolutely shocking things said by teachers, along the same lines, not usually in a big event with parents present but I can definitely believe a teacher would say these things.
if this did happen then surely other parents and many students will be equally outraged, I suggest reaching out via school parent social media or similar and complaining en masse which should have more impact than a lone voice.
even if you do it alone, it still does need addressing.

lol are you the head or the head’s wife?

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 15:59

It's totally inappropriate, and of course you should raise it as an issue with the school. Other people will have noticed too.

Have you never heard the phrase ‘hiding in plain sight’?
if he is comfortable enough to say this in front of hundreds of people then what is he saying one to one?

nomas · Yesterday 16:01

Sounds like grooming and hiding in plain site.

i accidentally voted YABU but you are definitely NOT being unreasonable. I have a child currently inpatient for an ED and any kind of comment like this would have been enough to send her spiralling a year ago. I’m sure it isn’t meant deliberately and I’m sure when it’s brought up the head will be mortified. but it DOES need addressing.

Quite. What HT would play fast and loose with their career like this?

By this logic no teacher/doctor/police officer or anyone else in a position of power would ever commit an offence 🧐

I hate though when people say hello gorgeous even though they mean it like, hello my lovely (which I don’t mind).

Still not remotely acceptable to say it to the girls but not the boys?

No I don’t say it like that. I would use it as a descriptor when talking about someone. So I might be like, oh I was on a call with Jerry earlier, he is gorgeous isn’t he.

No of course not?

Well not necessarily anyway.

'And she's absolutely gorgeous' is about her.

If he'd said 'And she LOOKS absolutely gorgeous' that would be about her looks.

EmailsaysOOO · Yesterday 16:06

Yes we all agree. You need to say something OP. These girls aren't just pretty faces or clothes horses. Please raise it and bring the guy screaming and kicking into the current millenium.

MozzieFreeZone · Yesterday 16:06

So why do you think he didn't say that to the boys?

But it depends on whether they are, teenage boys aren’t generally known for their kindness and loveliness, so gorgeous wouldn’t fit. For some maybe, but evidently not the ones getting the awards here.

And we know that it wasn’t said about ALL of the girls, maybe one or two.

MozzieFreeZone · Yesterday 16:08

@Boreded
It's right there in the title and in the opening post - he said it about every single girl.

Because teenage boys aren’t usually known for their kindness and loveliness, I’m sure they got some other compliments that suited the individual.

Not everyone has the same qualities
