Stained mattresses….

Exciting, I know, but aibu to assume everybody’s mattress is stained?

I’m meticulous about washing bedding so beds always look
and smell fresh and clean, but as soon as I strip them the mattress just looked awful.
we had a new one about 6 months ago, yet it’s already got yellow and brown circles on.

Teen DS is even worse. I’d stripped the beds today then got caught at the door before I could re-make with spare bedding. MIL was visiting g and popped upstairs and I felt mortified that she might see the bare mattress ( MIL issues, I know). But this is the same for everyone; yes? MIL will have stains on hers too?!

I know I could use a mattress protector but I don’t, so here we are!

Do you have a vaxx spot wash or similar ?
My mattresses (otty) have a detachable zip off which goes in the wash. But I also use a protector over the top of that.

Curlywurlyfrizzylizzy · Yesterday 20:24

Mattress protectors here, no stains.

SoPunkontheInternet · Yesterday 20:25

@momager22 no but would this get the stains out because I’m willing to invest if so…

Mattress protector also, no stains. I also bought pillows protectors to avoid stains on pillows.

We have a waterproof cover and then a mattress protector on all of ours. Quite frankly they were so expensive that a 20 quid cover on each wasnt optional!

Mattresses themselves are as clean as the day they arrived

AliceMcK · Yesterday 20:26

Mattress and pillow protectors always.

Tortephant · Yesterday 20:27

We have matters protectors so no issues. I also recommend a vax spot wash, every home should have one.

SabbatWheel · Yesterday 20:29

Why wouldn’t you use a mattress protector?!
A decent mattress can cost £££ so it seems logical to me.

We have an old thin one then a waterproof bamboo one that doesn’t make you sweat, then the usual sheet.

Current mattress is 9 years old and still clean and comfortable. We also turn it regularly.

Sycamoretrees · Yesterday 20:29

Of course you're noticing stains if youre not using matress protectors....that's precisely what they are for.

Same. Well, I have a mattress protector but it isn't waterproof. Ours is about 7 years old so it's got a few yellowy patches - I assume it's sweat!

Sycamoretrees · Yesterday 20:40

If yout mattress protector is ruckeling up you've got the wrong one. I have one that is like a thick fitted sheet that goes under the fitted sheet you sleep on.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Yesterday 20:41

Mattress protectors here. No rucking up and no stains.

Snowie99 · Yesterday 20:51

What are the stains?

Dearg · Yesterday 20:54

Another massive vote for mattress protectors, pillow protectors, even duvet protectors.
you can buy a mattress protector for pretty much ever depth of mattress, any size. Makes so much sense.

ShakyBake · Yesterday 21:08

I'm sorry OP but this is something I have never experienced. I actually just removed the cover from my 1 year old Sima and it is spotless.

I have to ask the obvious question - do you eat or drink in bed?

Has your husband accidentally soiled the bed possibly when you were away for a few days and he wasn't eating well?

Yep this! The John Lewis mattress protectors are brilliant and don’t budge it’s like a nice thick fitted sheet. And waterproof!

no stains. Mattresses and pillow protectors here.

intrigued by the vax mentioned though so off to have a look

SoPunkontheInternet · Yesterday 21:16

We don’t eat in bed. It seems to be sweat, and a Google search assured me this is quite normal… though maybe not!!

We've always used a mattress protector and yet ours started showing sweat/oil stains after a few years. We actually just got rid of it after 14 years use. I'd like to keep the new one in pristine condition so considering using two mattress protectors. I don't want to use a waterproof one as it will be too sweaty.

Mattress protectors here, no stains.

Since I started using one all the time when I last got a new mattress, mine is so much cleaner. I did spill coffee on it and have not quite got the stain out with the upholstery cleaner (and one very heavy period flood) but in terms of the 'normal' staining that just seems to appear on mattresses, it has survived pretty well. I have even bought second hand mattresses when needed and they must have had protectors on as they weren't stained.

When we moved house recently I was appalled at the state of the DCs mattresses (I don't change their bedding as they're 16-20) so next time they get new ones I'll be getting them mattress protectors. So yes, it's normal if you don't use a mattress protector!

I have the vaxx thing, you can clean few things with this. I clean our rugs, couch, bed headboard with it. Very handy to have! We have pets and it clean mud/sick of rugs.

I use mattress protectors, but some stains get through. I had a horrible flooding incident that went through protector, but not as much as it would have without it.
