Stained mattresses….

Exciting, I know, but aibu to assume everybody’s mattress is stained?

I’m meticulous about washing bedding so beds always look
and smell fresh and clean, but as soon as I strip them the mattress just looked awful.
we had a new one about 6 months ago, yet it’s already got yellow and brown circles on.

Teen DS is even worse. I’d stripped the beds today then got caught at the door before I could re-make with spare bedding. MIL was visiting g and popped upstairs and I felt mortified that she might see the bare mattress ( MIL issues, I know). But this is the same for everyone; yes? MIL will have stains on hers too?!

I know I could use a mattress protector but I don’t, so here we are!

I have used a mattress protector on every mattress I acquire (the current one is due to be replaced but doesn't have a mark on it) Was a different story when I would 'flood' but even then much easier to clean. I am allergic to pet dander, dust etc. (asthmatic) Which is a bit difficult with 2 furry friends 😻 So I use pillow protectors as well. Anything that makes expensive items last longer and keeps them fresh is worth the outlay imo.c

edited to add : it zips up along one side so the mattress is completely enclosed which I like, nothing can creep in there either !

@ridiculouslyridiculous can we compare notes because it’s being delivered tomorrow but I don’t actually know what to do with it…

I discovered a bloodstains under a mattress topper on the bed my niece uses when she stays ..It must have been at least 4 months old ...I tried everything I could think of to remove it , including the Vax spot cleaner but nothing worked .I had some Pink Stuff spray stain remover and decided to try that, not expecting it to do anything ...Sprayed it on and left it for a few minutes , rubbed it with a damp cloth and it was gone ...I couldn't believe something so cheap could be so effective , especially after 4 months !! .

Those of you with waterproof mattress protectors…. Do they make a crunchy noise? Flashbacks to a hotel stay where the mattress protectors made me sweat like crazy and sounded like greaseproof paper

Edited

They’re expensive but get the John Lewis ones, they don’t make a sound, don’t budge. Worth every penny.

ChocolateApples · 11/10/2026 22:57

I have a bit of yellowing. Always use a mattress protector though. The mattress feels too raw without it through just a thin sheet. It stays on just like a fitted sheet does as it's constructed similarly.

No, noise at all. They feel quilted and puffy, I think there’s webbing inside, so more like a mattress topper than plasticky waterproof sheet. But I have flooded before as had very heavy periods in the past and it washed well and protected the mattress too. I’ve melted one in the tumble drier before so there is a waterproof element but you can’t hear, see or feel it.

They dont make a sound at all.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 11/10/2026 23:08

I use pillow and mattress protectors and mine are still stained. I'm amazed to hear that people have old mattresses that look like new. I really don't think I'm excessively sweaty, and there's only me in the bed, so dont know why mine is so stained 😞

Nearly50omg · 11/10/2026 23:13

Disgusting!! 🤢 ZERO reason for having stained mattresses!!!

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 11/10/2026 23:19

Well, the marks are usually sweat marks.

Even with a mattress protector, if it isn’t waterproof, chances are the sweat can still reach the mattress and form this big ring yellowy marks.

I came to have this realisation after I purchased mattress protectors for my DDs bedroom. She had recently stopped wearing nappies and I thought we were on the clear with the protector. Unfortunately we weren’t as they were not waterproof and she peed herself.

Some waterproof protectors have this candy wrapper property that is really noisy and is plasticky and awful.

I am yet to find a decent one.

StormKevin · 11/10/2026 23:21

Why does anyone care about it given the mattress is covered by a sheet.

Pennina · 11/10/2026 23:21

Ours looks grim. Several cups of tea, a wee accident and other life incidents with kids when they were little. I really will use a mattress protector when I get a new one. However I am just too embarrassed to order a new one and have the old one collected. I do need it collecting as it’s too heavy to lift/get downstairs. We really need a new one as the old one is uncomfortable.

JaceLancs · 11/10/2026 23:27

I spent an absolute fortune on a pure wool stuffed pocket sprung mattress and there’s no way it will be stained
Invest in a well fitting mattress protector and it will not only protect your mattress it will make your bottom sheet feel more luxurious and smooth

Stickykidney · 11/10/2026 23:30

Team stained mattress here and I use two mattress protectors .. I assumed everyone had a stained mattress?!? It's horrible to look at but just one of those things...
Stained within a month or so of getting.

Busybeemumm · 11/10/2026 23:32

Mattress and pillow protectors are a must! You can pick up inexpensive ones. Cotton topped ones don't make any noise at all and make the mattress more comfortable. Easy enough to chuck in the wash. No stains here.

I really wouldn't worry about it- I'm sure the people who collect mattresses have seen all sorts of grim.

What are the stains?

Blood, sweat, drinks, food ?

OldieButBaddie · 11/10/2026 23:56

No stains on our mattress because we have a topper

So comfortable and saves the mattress

Tink3rbell30 · 11/10/2026 23:57

No marks at all on mine or DD's. Had them about 5 years.

BrilliantBetty · Yesterday 00:00

I thought everyone used a mattress protector. It doesn’t make a noise at all it’s just a second much thicker sheet underneath the normal sheet. I wash with every bedding wash and have a spare in the laundry cupboard. Even with a mattress topper (memory foam) I put a mattress protector sheet. You’ll have no more stains on the mattress.

Don’t get a wet sheet, that may make a rustly noise.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · Yesterday 00:03

We have a topper that fits in the washer. The mattress is quite old but no marks. We did spill a cup of tea on it though once (I had stripped the bed and knocked my brew off the side table). The vax spot cleaner worked and I put loads of bicarb on it afterwards too, left it a few hours and then hoovered it off

Greenmouldycheese · Yesterday 00:29

I have mattress protectors on all the beds so they have all kept clean. You could probably use a steam cleaner to bring them back up white.

Skippydoodle · Yesterday 00:32

I manage a holiday let. Over 10k guests and no stains on the mattress- we have mattress protectors. Looks like it is brand new.

bert3400 · Yesterday 00:34

I have an Airbnb and striped the bed fully, underneath was a massive stain on the mattress which was only 6 months old, underneath the mattress protector, which I guess they washed.....looked liked tea or coffee, anyway I got some vanish granules that you bleach your washing with and scrubbed the stain, next morning completely gone ...hoovered the granules up that hadn't been absorbed. I use mattress protector on all our beds ...they don't stop tea or coffee but certainly sweat stains, which are very common.
