Stained mattresses….

Exciting, I know, but aibu to assume everybody’s mattress is stained?

I’m meticulous about washing bedding so beds always look
and smell fresh and clean, but as soon as I strip them the mattress just looked awful.
we had a new one about 6 months ago, yet it’s already got yellow and brown circles on.

Teen DS is even worse. I’d stripped the beds today then got caught at the door before I could re-make with spare bedding. MIL was visiting g and popped upstairs and I felt mortified that she might see the bare mattress ( MIL issues, I know). But this is the same for everyone; yes? MIL will have stains on hers too?!

I know I could use a mattress protector but I don’t, so here we are!

Oh god. I've spilled more cups of coffee/spilt breakfast in bed more times than I can mention. The mattress protector has taken the worst of it, luckily - but there are definitely stains on the mattress itself. I am a slattern! 😝

I've seen how to fix this on youtube, so I googled it.

Those of you with waterproof mattress protectors…. Do they make a crunchy noise? Flashbacks to a hotel stay where the mattress protectors made me sweat like crazy and sounded like greaseproof paper

Edited

We have Silent Night ones, they aren't rustle but they are a bit slip n slide like. We have the waterproof one on, and then a flat protector on top of that which holds everything in place, stops any rustling and sliding.

I'm sorry OP but this is something I have never experienced. I actually just removed the cover from my 1 year old Sima and it is spotless.

I have to ask the obvious question - do you eat or drink in bed?

Has your husband accidentally soiled the bed possibly when you were away for a few days and he wasn't eating well?

Why would you first instinct be that her husband has shit the bed 😂

Mattress protector also, no stains. I also bought pillows protectors to avoid stains on pillows.

Same here.

If all there is between a body and the mattress is a sheet then of course the mattress is going to get stained.

ElizaSchuyler · Yesterday 12:07

We use mattress protectors. Dd has adenomyosis and ds used to sweat very heavily so they were akways a necessity in our house. Plus me and dh have spilt several cups of tea.

SumptuousPecanNougat · Yesterday 12:10

I don't think it matters if it's 'just' a visible stain and doesn't smell. You only see the bare mattress when you change the sheets, which means no-one else has to see it, ever. If you think you won't like the way a mattress cover feels and don't have an incontinence problem that requires a waterproof cover, it's not necessary.

SoPunkontheInternet · Yesterday 18:08

@FrankieNeverRelax I did share this idea with DP. He assures me this wasn’t the case 🙃

I’ve taken delivery of my Vax spot wash (with a lovely special offer on Amazon too) but haven’t reached the mattress yet because I was too excited to try it on the carpet next to where we remove shoes.

i think I’m going to enjoy this A LOT. Anybody with one, please do share your tips. I’m so excited I might start another thread…

Any thing that has material pretty much! Rugs, couch, bed headboards, kitchen chairs… i use mine a lot! Clean pet sick very well too.. it was the reason why i got this at the first place! You can also clean carpet on staircase if you have

number1of7 · Yesterday 18:23

Ours is gross. Have always used a mattress protector too.

fiorentina · Yesterday 18:26

All beds have a mattress protector and pillow protectors so no stains. For teens I was the mattress protector every time as well as sheets. Not as often for us unless I’ve had night sweats!

Gwenhwyfar · Yesterday 18:27

Yes, mine is stained. It's about ten years old so needs replacing anyway though. I shouldn't use one that's too old because of I'm allergic to dust mites.

apologies but sometimes you build up a picture of the op when you read posts like this and I can just imagine this is something her husband would do

Ugh - oh dear, absolutely not!

I'm sorry, but I used to work for a bedding company, so this is one of those things where I draw a hard line! I once dumped a guy I was seeing when he brought me to his, and I saw the state of his pillows! I'm assuming you're students, but even then, there's no excuse really.

Every pillow and every mattress should have a protector, no reason not to. It's a good hygiene practice. Please - extend the life of your whole bed and be stain-free. They're not even expensive!

Hankunamatata · Yesterday 20:01

No. I use waterproof (breathable) protector plus cotton one for stinky teens.

Christ, ignore this person. I have a mattress protector that is stained because I’m a chronic fake tanner, we both sweat in bed (normal!) and obvs the other bed stuff too. Plus young kids coming into our bed and spilling things! I wash the mattress protector but it’s still stained! It’s completely normal

MrsPapillon · Yesterday 20:08

DiscoCherries · 11/10/2026 21:10

Yep this! The John Lewis mattress protectors are brilliant and don’t budge it’s like a nice thick fitted sheet. And waterproof!

I’ve had two, and although they’re great and fit brilliantly both times the zips have bust the first time I’ve washed them.

MeowDoku · Yesterday 20:09

We have a soft waterproof fully zipped around the mattress protector that mainly stays on, then a normal padded protector that goes on top and gets washed with the sheets, this time of year it also has a heated under blanket. We first discovered the full zip waterproof ones when DS was potty training, they're the kind care homes use so they are soft and not plasticky but fully spill proof (DH tested ours with a coffee....) so our mattresses look brand new

SoPunkontheInternet · Yesterday 20:10

A huge thank you to the lonely people who have either identified with me or given me useful tips and ideas.

Not sure how we would be students with a teen DS, or how people manage to get a feel through a post that my DH doesn’t eat properly
when I’m not home…. But I think I may leave this one here now 😂

I’ll be too busy with my vax to check in anyway 🙃

You can buy cleaners especially for mattresses , I tried one from Amazon recently which worked very well
