If I could ban one type of thread from this website…

… It would be one's asking about trousers on flights.

Bearing in mind I've been on here over 20 years, Lived through all the baby pasta, the baby modelling threads and all that crap, that yet this one never dies.

I think it's more than even mother of a bride theme because more people are obsessed with what trousers to wear sitting down for a few hours.
What type of thread always makes you roll your eyes?

(Special points for people who say threats like the one we're on now, very good well done 😃)

OP posts:

All the transphobic ones, including those where the underlying message is one of transphobia but the OP is pretending otherwise.

Hard agree. So much hate spewing on mumsnet.

"My husband does nothing around the house, refuses to shower, and spends all day watching sports while ignoring the kids".

"Do you think he might be ND? But the waiting list for a diagnosis is over a year, so be nice to the poor lamb until then".

The PR disasters threads that never end. What sort of people just devote endless time slagging off everything about 2 famous people they don’t know? It’s the sort of toxic thread that demonstrates all that is wrong with social media.

The other batshit long runner is The Salt Path one. I understand if you’re personally been done over by the author you’d be seriously pissed off but the level of detail and detective work on that thread from people with absolutely no skin in the game is astounding. It’s clear that the author and her husband are having a great time trolling the universe and loving how much they wind everyone up.

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · Yesterday 17:55

The ones asking for advice but it's not possible to give it without more info but said info can't possibly be shared as it's too 'outing'. Often silly things like an unusual hobby 🙄

Also aibu posts with no poll or ambiguous poll options

HoldMyWine · Yesterday 17:55

Christmas threads in September or earlier

justasking111 · Yesterday 17:56

Wind ups with 1 post from the OP and 800 posts with people repeating the same advice.

I always check and swerve when the OP does that.

honeylulu · Yesterday 17:56

All the threads expressing horror about germs/hygiene- people who don't wash their towels and pyjamas every day or shock horror don't change out of their outdoor clothes and get outdoor germs on the furniture. I feel like asking "but what do you think will happen? Because I can tell you - absolutely nothing!"

And the "my colleague should have been on sick leave with a cold, so selfish blah blah". FFS if we don't catch a few mild viruses we'll have fuck all immune system to fight off the really serious ones.

Tessisme · Yesterday 17:58

The ones where people are asking if they should go to A&E. Not because I don’t think they should go, but because they will be told not to by many many posters, even when it’s blindingly obvious they should.

All the 'What Plant is This?' threads in which the first and immediate response is from someone who knows diddly squat about gardening but has put the photo through some plant app. Anyone can do that love, and it doesn't mean the plant app is right. Experienced gardener posters are far more likely to be accurate, and that's why the OP started the thread. To ask people.

Wonder if these are now bots putting it there favoured AI?

I haven't read the whole thread, but I would ban the show off threads like . . .

Should I buy this bag for £1750 to carry my lunch, or push the boat out and buy the £2570 one?

I only earn £117,000 and I'm struggling to put food on the table because my hair and nail appointments are so expensive.

You might be thinking of the thread - "I've got a live-in gardener, handyman and nanny but I'm definitely not posh"

Htcunya · Yesterday 18:02

The regular threads about worst holiday destinations.

They inevitably end up with posters slagging off beautiful and interesting cities because they couldn't find enough to do to fill their two-day break, or entire countries after a week in some ill-chosen resort.

Loving this thread, perfect for a Sunday afternoon.
For Starters:

  1. Use of the word gotten (Aaaaargh). Please. Stop.
  2. Parking threads with no diagram from the start.
  3. Lack of punctuation.

Spookily, I wore wide legs jeans on a long haul flight recently. It was unexpectedly great. They are loose fitting and high waisted.

Please tell me what AMA means.

I also don’t know what AMA stands for.
I wish there was an abbreviation translation page somewhere. I did see someone say DDog the other day and I thought this is too much now, please stop.

Rosscameasdoody · Yesterday 18:02

Threads seemingly very concerned about public finances which are actually benefit bashing posts.

Ask Me Anything. And there is actually a page on MN which explains the abbreviations

BlessedAreThePureOfHeart · Yesterday 18:03

The 'Who Wants A Tarot Reading?' threads.
50 billion yes please, me please! replies, OP does the first two which are usually 'you always put others first you need to make more time for yourself..' well no shit that's every woman ever born pretty much, then OP disappears.

And for God's sake whatever the seriousness of your problem or dilemma, never ever admit you can't drive or that will be your thread sunk with a thousand why can't you drive/learn to drive then posts.

Yes and then they say they can’t for xyz reason. Then why are you asking?

Anything where the OP simply won’t accept the advice 999 posts have given her and instead clings to the 1 post that agrees with her

First post nails it ….. plus the ones where OP is never seen again after their first post! Usually gets a zillion very long replies too - Jeez!!

GurbangulyJones · Yesterday 18:05

This is so funny. I've actually been considering for a while whether I'd get any amusement out of doing a NC specifically for the purpose of popping onto threads that ask pointless questions and just answering bluntly. For example
Could my husband be having an affair? - maybe
Should I go NC with my in-laws? - I don't know
Is my DP coming in shitfaced, pissing on the carpet and vomming all over the cat is a bit disrespectful? yes
Alternatively I could find something better to do . . .

Happyjoe · Yesterday 18:05

RaraRachael · Yesterday 16:02

Any one where the OP obviously doesn't like the replies they're getting so never returns.

Or gets it deleted. There was one yesterday about a lady who had IVF with an abuser and he was damaging her other daughter with his cruelty.

She didn't like the replies and it was unanimous in her getting away from the man.

GurbangulyJones · Yesterday 18:07

Oh I nearly forgot! AMA threads.
'I'm a trapeze artist, AMA.'
No thanks.

I thought the funniest reply was from @squoosh - ‘does your wife know you’re on MN trying to get your mitts on strangers fannies’. Classic.

That is very helpful, thank you!

AMA and some of the other abbreviations aren't MN things, they are internet things so a general Google is usually enough to get the right answer

Tessisme · Yesterday 18:08

I quite like some of the AMA threads. There have been a few where the OP was very knowledgeable about something like autism or ADHD or disability benefits and the questions asked led to some really useful information.
