People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

I agree. The British are so bloody arrogant only eating English food, expecting everyone to speak English then shouting at poor little Manuel when he doesn’t understand. Sitting in English pubs getting drunk and watching Football.

And where are you from (is your username any indication?).

Nothing will surprise me after seeing that Spanish restaurants in Tenerife serve full english breakfast because of all the British tourists

And? If it was full of Chinese tourists they’d probably be serving rice and noodles.

Kalanthe · Today 10:49

It's not a problem, it's just baffling that people go to another country just to get drunk by the pool and eat exact same food as they do at home (excluding people with autism, eating disorders etc of course). They have zero interest in exploring local culture and cuisine and clearly it's such a huge market the local restaurants had to adapt

How long does your bafflement last? Does it ruin your day or is it a millisecond of bafflement? Is it full on bafflement or just a short quick bafflement?

Are you the kind of uncultured person who goes on an all-inclusive to Spain to get hammered by the pool (and on the plane there as well)? Why are you so personally offended by what I wrote?

BlackeyedSusan · Today 12:08

Because first thing in the morning they just want something familiar?

Brokentoes85 · Today 12:10

Weirdo

BugJuice · Today 12:15

All the hotel buffets I’ve been to have had fruit, yoghurt, meats and cheeses, pastries, toast, cooked items etc, all of which I eat at home regularly for breakfast. So cereal would be a novelty for me on holiday! I haven’t bought cereal since I was at university 20 years ago.

zingally · Today 12:28

Because some people, myself included, a) aren't that big on breakfast anyway, b) have somewhat temperamental innards that will want to shit everywhere at 11:30am if you've dared to eat something a bit out of your norm 3 hours previously.

I always used to describe my innards as capable of withstanding anything I gave them, but then I hit late 30s/early 40s, and they went, "Hmmm, not so sure about that."

Honestly, who cares what other people are eating for breakfast at a hotel buffet?! Presumably they know their own bodies well enough at their big ages, to know what will suit them and what won't?

I don't consider cornflakes to be boring. As a kid, we had to eat Weetabix every day for breakfast, 'cos there was a big gang of us and Mam complained that cornflakes were too expensive. Now, THAT's a boring breakfast. When we went on holidays, Mam would buy a box of cornflakes and we'd all be mega excited. Occasionally I have a bowl of cornflakes (when out and about) for nostalgic reasons. I don't usually have a box of them in the house, so it's a novelty for me.

Cornflakes are cheaper than Weetabix.

Your mum WBU.

Muffsies · Today 12:41

I love cornflakes, or just plain porridge if want something hot, i hate elaborate breakfasts.

I'll try almost anything for lunch, but when i've just got up i don't want too much. Sometimes i might only have a glass of milk, but by lunchtime i'm ready for a BIG meal, and supper just something plain again like apples, dates crackers and cheese.

i've found this is best for my digestion and weight control.

mumumental · Today 12:42

As an aside, weetabix are healthier than cornflakes. More fibre . People can eat what they want, though.

Oblongtriangle · Today 12:48

Lumpyteats · Today 07:11

Also, why do you eat boring and unhealthy cornflakes for breakfast at home, OP?

I don’t. As they are boring

It’s just the texture. It’s like eating a Brillo pad that then goes mushy.

Whatthefork1 · Today 12:57

Probably because they like to eat cornflakes for breakfast no matter where in the world they are.
I don’t eat cornflakes full stop so can’t relate.

Why do you care if people have a ‘boring’ breakfast (or any meal)?

BCBird · Today 13:07

PersephoneParlormaid · Today 07:05

Why do you care what others eat?

My first thought too. Used to love them as a child with hot milk- happy days

intrepidpanda · Today 13:26

Cereal is a bit of an alternative for me as its not something I eat generally but do enjoy it when I have it. So yes, more likely to eat it on holiday.

SourdoughSally · Today 13:29

I don't know why anyone would eat corn flakes for breakfast. They don't fill you up and are basically just sugar in crunchy form.

I've always been puzzled by people who go to a foreign country and eat nothing but British food.

intrepidpanda · Today 13:34

SabrinaBricklayer · Today 12:02

Ah but rice and noodles be cultured.
Its just English food that is uncultured

Also @Kalanthemany cultured people also occasionally like to just get pissed by the pool. Many cultured people also like the odd fry up and many cultured people have visited tenerife.
Life is better with variety.

Do you only eat food of the country you are in?

There you go - sugar in crunchy form ! That’s exactly why people might see them as a treat !

Beekman · Today 13:38

I don’t eat cereal at home as it’s not very good for me and doesn’t fill me up but I will have some as a treat on holiday if it’s offered. Why on earth do you care?

SnippySnappy · Today 14:01

When abroad, I take the opportunity to have lots of different breakfast foods.

My husband, on the other hand, sticks to cereal. He has some food intolerances and also has type 1 diabetes. Sometimes it's just easier for him to have what he knows will sit well in his stomach for the day, and is straightforward to dose insulin for. 🤷‍♀️

What do you find so puzzling? The fact people eat food they like? Or that unbeknownst to you, some people might have a medical condition or an eating disorder which means they eat a restrictive diet.

Are those concepts really so difficult to comprehend?

Ponoka7 · Today 14:13

@Onlythisnamewasavailable a sudden change in diet can cause diarrhoea. If you've got daytime activities booked and have had stomach issues on holiday before, then you'd stick to what you know. That's as well as gastro problems such as colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn's, GERD, which are quite common. My stomach is very sensitive, I'd love to be tucking into fish dishes, but I'm not having a holiday spoilt. I don't eat cereal. Perhaps we just stop trying to tell people how their body works and let them eat what they need to. I wasn't thinking of food poisoning, but I'm from a family of people who have gastro issues and I've become aware of how common it is to have a stoma. As well as the rise in gallbladder removal.
