How can good looking children have not particularly good looking parents?

Genuine question, just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

DH is very conventionally attractive. His two sisters are also very pretty and both modelled when they were younger. DH has been scouted too but wasn’t interested.

His parents are lovely people, but neither is what you’d call conventionally attractive. Even looking at photos of them when they were younger, you wouldn’t say either was particularly good looking.

I know genetics is a lottery but it seems quite remarkable that all three children turned out good looking. They’re all genetically related. Has anyone else come across this?

That's cultural to do with expectations of what a woman should look like before marriage and children. You see the same thing in Italy.

Plus an acceptance of all types of female bodies at the beach.
We get our appetite, metabolism, and how your body stores fat DNA from our fathers. So potentially women who have kids with fat men will be more likely to have fat kids. Just like men who pick women whose fathers are bald and wonder why their son ends up with no hair at 30.

Your features haven't fully formed, so if you think good looking is childlike (most men like small features with big eyes) that will be why. Slightly disturbing post.

Did you bother to read past the title?

Lifeomars · 09/10/2026 18:02

I was a drab looking child who longed to be pretty which is one of the reasons i think all children should be praised and valued for their qualities rather than for how they look. Anyway, my teenage years brought a real change and i turned into what a lot of people called beautiful which was a real shock to me and the attention was quite hard to deal with. All gone now as time had taken its toll but hopefully I am still a reasonable and kind person

I thought it was about children, as it was in the title why are children good looking.

So you wrote a post castigating the OP BEFORE you even read the post? Interesting....🙄🙅

BunnyLake · 09/10/2026 18:03

Maybe in the same way good looking people can have plain offspring.

Pallisers · 09/10/2026 18:03

My mother was a very beautiful woman - from the age of 18 to the day she died in her 80s. She had the family look - all of her sisters and most of her first cousins had the same look/shape face etc. they all looked like their grandmother I think. They all looked very like each other but only my mother and one other cousin were objectively beautiful - something about the way their particular features were arranged - not sure what made those 2 beautiful and the other nice looking women.

Plenty of people have liked my post, so I don't think I was the only one wondering if they were genuine.

"Plus an acceptance of all types of female bodies at the beach."

Well, yes, everyone can go to the beach, but I wouldn't agree that there's 'acceptance' or larger bodies in young women in southern Europe (maybe Malta aside).

OldieButBaddie · 09/10/2026 18:05

Interesting indeed!

I have amazing eyes but crap lips
Dh has amazing lips and nice but unremarkable eyes
DD luckily got my eyes, dh’s lips and god knows where her hair is from, but it’s stunning, always gets compliments

Had it been the other way round I wouldn’t give a toss though! I am very uninterested in what people look like, much more interested in their personality

It's just luck, obviously. I don't mean to be dismissive but what else could it be? I'm the opposite I have an unlucky mix of my parents and am less attractive than either.

The same for me unfortunately. My mum is quite pretty, even now in her 70s. She's widowed, and all the old single blokes she's friends with all shamelessly chase her. She's oblivious. Only ever had eyes for my dad, and now he's passed away, considers that part of her life over.
My dad was perhaps slightly below average, but made up for it in oodles of personality. Unfortunately, I've inherited the female version of dad's face, but less good. But, like him, I've got personality, and have never been short of friends.
My older sister did a bit better in the looks department, but less well with the personality. Neither of us inherited our mum's slightly ethereal, pixie-ish good looks sadly.

FKAT · 09/10/2026 18:07

I have a lot of first cousins. (Dad was one of 10). All the female ones are gorgeous, all the male ones look like Hobbits.

I think the same about my husband too! But then again I think our children are better looking than us 😂

boredsmored Shiloh always looks like she lives in a caravan park. Even at red carpet events.

Regardless her face is beautiful

Floatlikeafeather2 · 09/10/2026 18:08

😁

Half of the thread are talking about adults and half about kids.
I can see why everyone is confused because of the title.

MidnightMeltdown · 09/10/2026 18:11

I tend to notice this the other way around. Particularly with celebrities. Their kids almost never inherit their looks, and usually average at the very best. I almost feel a bit sorry for them growing up in the shadow of good looking parents.

The exception is Angelina Jolie’s daughter who looks just like her.

boredsmored · 09/10/2026 18:11

@Gwenhwyfar well I was disagreeing with the beautiful comment. They are attractive but neither are beautiful imo

AnneShirleyBlythe · 09/10/2026 18:12

Credittocress · 09/10/2026 16:46

  1. we tend to be much more forgiving of children’s looks than adults
  2. in the case of mine me and dad balance out. It could’ve gone really badly and child could’ve ended up with his nose and my chin, but actually we seem to have evened each other out (fingers crossed it sticks)

But OP is referencing the good looking adult children of unattractive parents. She didn’t say what they looked like as children just that the daughters modelled when younger.

goldtrainers · 09/10/2026 18:13

my children’s father has a look of oliver reed so quite strong features, as does his brother and they both get that from their father. their sister looks like them both but looks like she’s one of them in drag. she’s an awful human too so i’m pleased she was dealt a rough hand on the looks front.
im on the attractive side of average but take a terrible photo, like truely bad 99% of the time. but i’ve aged well into my face in real life and when i go back to my childhood home town and see people i went to school with i’m shocked at how different many look. i’ve never had any work done or botox or anything but seemed to have hit lucky on the face/wrinkles front.
my children haven’t inherited any of their fathers strong features and look very much like my side of the family. my oldest teen is described by others as incredibly handsome, something he is totally oblivious to despite a number of adoring girls at school. my other one was incredibly beautiful as a small child but is in that awkward teeth and face growing at different rates stage so has lost some of that polish but it will sort itself out i’m sure. one set of my grandparents looked like rita hayworth and clark gable in their prime. that didn’t pass to my mum or her brothers. all random but interesting.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 09/10/2026 16:45

Some people look cuter and more conventional as a child then grow out of it and become the parents

All the ‘odd looking’ kids I knew turned into fairly stunning adults

Yes, I think this is often the case.

What looks cute on a child is not the same as what looks attractive on an adult. Cherubic curls, and chubby cheeks do more for a three year old than a balding 50 something man.

There can be an element of fashion too. All my friends' parents were young in the 70's and to me they all look gormless with their lank hair and flares!

It is the same everywhere.
Obviously the men would prefer if their wives stayed the same and vice versa.
You look great when you are young. A natural glow even if not obviously beautiful, every generation is better than the last, well they’re supposed to be in a functional society, strive to do better than your parents, eat, sleep, education, self care.
Fashion and skin care make a big difference too.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 09/10/2026 18:14

Well I guess the genes just combine in such a way that works better or doesn't?

My friend's husband is a good looking chap - he's basically the spitting image of his mum and those looks are less what society would deem conventionally attractive for a woman.

I have a friend whose family are all quite attractive but her sister is off the scale stops traffic beautiful.

In a sort of related point, neither dh or I are particularly big people (we're both short-average height and narrow framed) One of our young adult children is much bigger than the rest of us (6'2, broad). To a casual observer, it doesn't really look like he belongs to us but it makes more sense if I tell you he's the same build as my brother and my grandfather was the same. (My parents are tiny too.)

This is the case for my teenage daughter. She's very pretty and so many people comment on it when they meet her and she's doing a bit of modelling on the side. If you were to sculpt a doll with perfect proportions and a perfectly symmetrical face, she would honestly be it. She has been told for example that her nose is really one you would ask for if you were to go for a nose job.

I, on the other hand look like a cow and absolutely nothing about me or my face is in good proportion or symmetrical. We don't even look related 😂 She does look like her dad's side of the family though. Only good thing about my ex-husband were his genes.

Is this definitely true? I have 3 sisters & my metabolism & bone shape resembles my dad whereas the other 3 are more like my mum.
