How can good looking children have not particularly good looking parents?

Genuine question, just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

DH is very conventionally attractive. His two sisters are also very pretty and both modelled when they were younger. DH has been scouted too but wasn’t interested.

His parents are lovely people, but neither is what you’d call conventionally attractive. Even looking at photos of them when they were younger, you wouldn’t say either was particularly good looking.

I know genetics is a lottery but it seems quite remarkable that all three children turned out good looking. They’re all genetically related. Has anyone else come across this?

Billy Connolly has a very beautiful wife he's not imo attractive.
His 3 dd's all look like him.

GreyCarpet · 09/10/2026 17:40

Yes. I went to school with a girl who was very pretty.

Not stunning (although i havent seen her since she was about 12!) Just very symmetrical face, big eyes, even smile, perfect teeth. Almost boringly 'perfect'!

But neither of her parents were anything special to look at. She just hit the genetic jackpot!

nutshellpot · 09/10/2026 17:41

Its some strange genetic luck I think. I have a cousin with two very average looking parents who came out looking like Gemma Arterton. My husbands Aunt, now elderly but as a young woman was jaw droppingly beautiful and married a very wealthy man who literally had "his driver" stop so he could leap out of his car and get her number when she was walking down the street. He sons look rather like her brothers short and stock and her daughter looks exactly like her Dad, pretty but not like her mother which is a sort of once in a blue mood genetic lucky strike!

Why? I can't make your comment match with a single thing that the OP has actually said. Perhaps it's not @smyshna that has made the disturbing post.

Do you think this poster has been at the cooking sherry?

Diddlysqat · 09/10/2026 17:43

Some times I think it's nothing more than a blend of both parents genes ,unfortunately for me the opposite applies. I am ordinary looking and quite unphotogenic. My parents were both very good looking and on several occasions in the past people that know me have seen me with them and questioned me as to who they were, all quite surprised when they found out they were my parents 😂

LBFseBrom · 09/10/2026 17:44

It also happens the other way around. Very good looking parents have ordinary-looking children.

It's just the way it goes, no reason.

Tiddleypom1 · 09/10/2026 17:44

Interesting. Me and DH are slightly above average looks wise I’d say but normal. We have 2 DDs. One is pretty/cute at 6 but our 4 year old is truly beautiful. Gets commented on. Dunno rhyme or reason but I can already see that she will have perhaps an easier walk in life.

Your features haven't fully formed, so if you think good looking is childlike (most men like small features with big eyes) that will be why. Slightly disturbing post.

The OP is referring to children as in offspring of a particular set of parents. She's not saying children, as in minors, are attractive.

@user1464187087I think Helen Mirren got better in her 50s although she may have had help

I may have to save up for the help. I suppose I could try DIY. 😀

Yup, that's my daughter!

It’s everyone’s daughter on MNs!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/10/2026 17:47

Good looks skip a generation. Do you have children with him.
DH is huge and I am petite. The only thing that I hoped for when pregnant was that DD didn’t get his frame. She didn’t.
I recall my neighbour’s were similar as in he was big she was slim, every DS they had took after their mother slim. The daughter was the image of the father. Very large shoulders etc.

The celebrities and their Siblings thing:
It's extremely common in Hollywood for men aswell as women to have an early nose job for example.
Search for George Clooney in Roseanne 😁
He's also admitted to eyelid surgery and looks to have had a jawline/chin implant.

Angelina Jolie is my idea of aesthetic perfection in a woman - yep, early nose job, strongly suspected Buccal fat removal/jaw implant/recent face, brow lift.

Not being horrible - had some stuff done myself 😁

Angelina & Brad's kids won the genetics lottery though and I saw an erroneous early photo of Clooney and Amal's son - spitting image of a boyhood Cloonster.

Angelina even before any work was gorgeous. Shiloh is also gorgeous.

Some percentage of children have been unknowingly brought up by fathers who are not their biological fathers.

This is estimated at anything between 10% and 20%. It is of course difficult to get an accurate estimate for obvious reasons (e.g. in France DNA testing is illegal unless court ordered), but this is what the few medical studies existing would indicate.

Edited

But OP said they're all genetically related. I presumed there was a DNA test because how would she know otherwise that the children are related to each other or to their parents.

If they're not genetically related, one option is that that the children were actually chosen/bought for their looks. I keep getting a video on social media about this - children who were adopted but chosen specifically to look a certain way.

I get that now, her title was worded as asking why children are more attractive to her than adults. I didn't get she was referring to adults and their parents rather than children.

fumingrightnow1 · 09/10/2026 17:54

This thread is so funny considering the majority off people on this planet are average looking a small number above average and a small number below average its amazing all the above average good looking people and their children are on this thread.

Smallestshadow · 09/10/2026 17:54

I knew all the people with the apparently extraordinarily stunning children would crawl out of the woodwork! Aren’t we all biased towards our own DC? 😂

MysteryParcel · 09/10/2026 16:51

It works the other way around as well, I’ve seen good looking couples have children who are…er… less “aesthetically pleasing” than themselves too!! Look at celebrities for examples.

In the case of celebrities it could just be that the children are inheriting their 'real' faces rather than their operated on ones.

saraclara · 09/10/2026 17:02

I've just come back from Spain, where virtually every young woman was stunningly gorgeous, and slim, yet shapely.
The women of, say 40+, were not so much.

In some gene pools, how people look for the first half of their lives can be very different from the second half.

That's cultural to do with expectations of what a woman should look like before marriage and children. You see the same thing in Italy.

Complementary features.

A midwife friend has told me that two beautiful people can make an ugly baby if their features aren't complementary. On the contrary, two average or even ugly people can combine in the right way to have a gorgeous kid who actually looks like them, but just a much more attractive version.

Given that a midwife only sees a baby for a very short period of time and that a baby's face can be affected by the type of birth they've had, this seems like a pretty stupid thing for her to say.

Victoria isn’t beautiful though and nor is Michael. Bruce has traits considered attractive in a man not a woman

I think both Victoria Beckham and Michael Sheen are good looking.
I agree about Bruce Willis's features being more masculine.

Getalittle · 09/10/2026 17:57

Sartre · 09/10/2026 16:51

It can go the opposite way too with beautiful parents making not so beautiful children. The Beckhams aren’t exactly bonny kids and Michael Sheen’s daughter - sheesh. Also Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughters.

What on earth? They are all gorgeous kids

FancyKitten · 09/10/2026 17:58

I know a couple who are quite ordinary looking, not particularly glam, or well-put-together… But their young son & daughter are stunning! They look like they’ve just stepped off a Ralph Lauren ad campaign. They have that blonde Scandi sort of look. It’s totally random, you’d never put them together with the parents. Beautiful children!

I presume midwives also know people outside of the birthing room!
