How can good looking children have not particularly good looking parents?

Genuine question, just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

DH is very conventionally attractive. His two sisters are also very pretty and both modelled when they were younger. DH has been scouted too but wasn’t interested.

His parents are lovely people, but neither is what you’d call conventionally attractive. Even looking at photos of them when they were younger, you wouldn’t say either was particularly good looking.

I know genetics is a lottery but it seems quite remarkable that all three children turned out good looking. They’re all genetically related. Has anyone else come across this?

This can happen. My DF is often mistaken for being Turkish or Syrian despite being the child of British and European parents.

It’s ancestral I think - we’ve all probably got all sorts in our ancestry really.

Agree, particularly the observation that some families have kids who don't look alike where's some parents have kids who all look alike. There's a family where I'm originally from (South Yorkshire pit village) and they had 6 kids in 6 years. I was in the same year at school as their youngest. They all looked alike and my mam used to say about them "when you've seen one, you've seen 'em all!"

This made me laugh - I recently met a family with four kids and that is how I feel about them - you’re being looked at by four of exactly the same face 🤣

What did they look like as children? You say they aren't attractive now, but without all of the statistics and history; you won't really have a definitive answer.

Genetics, diet, economy, climates people live in etc all play a part.

Do you have children, OP? Would you consider yourself attractive?

The thread has an element of bragging and is a bit unfair, biased, it's making a sweeping statement that your husband's situation will apply to families across the globe, and a little disturbing talking about 'attractive children'.

I've often joked that it's lucky my son got the best features from both of us. We are not bad looking but our son is very good looking. He has always had girls interested in him and it's often been commented on so it's not me being biased.
If he had his dad's ears and hair colour and my nose and lack of height it would be a not so attractive outcome.

Ha same with my son - he’s got my colouring ( and sadly thin fine fair ish hair ) but my Hs strong features - he looks like an exact mix of both of us

I don't think Victoria is pretty whatsoever. I agree about Harper and Romeo being better looking than the others, though.

I always thought she was the prettiest Spice Girl when younger....

30 odd years ago I was at ante natal clinic waiting for my check up. Sitting near me were a couple, and I know I will get my arse flamed for saying this but this couple were the ugliest looking I had ever seen. They had a little toddler girl with them who was one of the loveliest little girls I have ever come across. She was just beautiful.
I did wonder if she was just being looked after for the day and they werent her actual parents 🙄

Oh no! Ginger, Scary and Baby were all far prettier!

I think genetics are fascinating. My daughter is very pretty, very slim and graceful and long-limbed. She strongly resembles her bio mother (my ex-partner), her maternal cousin (male), her aunt and her grandmother. Her aunt is also conventionally very pretty, but her grandmother absolutely isn't. Oddly, you can see the resemblance despite everyone in the family noticing how different the same features look on different people!

My brother and his wife have three children - all theirs! - and they all three look totally different from each other. You would never pick them out of a group and say they were siblings. Yet, each of them looks recognisably like one or other parent, or both parents.

I've also got a friend whose twin daughters were that classic case of 'black baby, white baby' when they were small: they were so polarised. It's less obvious now, but you still would tend to assume they weren't related at all.

Some people look cuter and more conventional as a child then grow out of it and become the parents

All the ‘odd looking’ kids I knew turned into fairly stunning adults

Patrick Swayze and his brother are a good example of when a few mm makes a difference. Same features, different outcome.

Your features haven't fully formed, so if you think good looking is childlike (most men like small features with big eyes) that will be why. Slightly disturbing post.

Eh? oP is talking about her adult husband. Where do you get childlike from? Did you even read her post.

This is so true.

A good friend of mine is gorgeous and turns heads in the street. But for some reason she looks like a funny little mouse in all her photos. Very strange phenomenon.

It's not strange at all, in fact it's quite common. She's just not photogenic. The opposite is also true. Some of the most stunning photographic models are quite ordinary looking in the flesh!

I guess that proves the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I always thought Posh was the prettiest (and so did David by the looks of it :).
I don't necessarily think shes the prettiest now, but back in the day she was the one I wanted to look like lol

I thought it was about children, as it was in the title why are children good looking.

I am still my Dad’s child even though I’m in my 50s.

Reading comprehension matters.

Easy. Its the same as you can have two siblings who look similar but one is stunning and the other is average looking.

Beauty is a freak of nature. Slight tweak of genes and someone ordinary can have a stunning child. Or a good looking person end up with someone weird looking. One good example is Paul McCartney - he was gorgeous when he was young but his son is not attractive at all, despite looking like his dad.

Paul's daughter with Heather looks like a female Paul

I worked in a social services nursery and there were some truly beautiful children where the parents were proper ugly
