How can good looking children have not particularly good looking parents?

Genuine question, just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

DH is very conventionally attractive. His two sisters are also very pretty and both modelled when they were younger. DH has been scouted too but wasn’t interested.

His parents are lovely people, but neither is what you’d call conventionally attractive. Even looking at photos of them when they were younger, you wouldn’t say either was particularly good looking.

I know genetics is a lottery but it seems quite remarkable that all three children turned out good looking. They’re all genetically related. Has anyone else come across this?

Yes it’s very common and many people are not photogenic, they may have been very attractive in their youth but it is not reflected in the images,

This is so true.

A good friend of mine is gorgeous and turns heads in the street. But for some reason she looks like a funny little mouse in all her photos. Very strange phenomenon.

Somethinggg · 09/10/2026 17:22

Photos aren't a great way to judge.

I'm assuming your DH is at least in his 20s to have multiple adult siblings, so the photos you're talking about of PILs youth are probably no later than the 90s. Cameras were just much shitter then. It's a great deal easier to take good photos now even without all the filters. Plus some people aren't particularly photogenic.

TheRealSmurfette · 09/10/2026 17:25

Luck of the draw I guess op.
We’re all bloody gorgeous in this house 😎

The celebrities and their Siblings thing:
It's extremely common in Hollywood for men aswell as women to have an early nose job for example.
Search for George Clooney in Roseanne 😁
He's also admitted to eyelid surgery and looks to have had a jawline/chin implant.

Angelina Jolie is my idea of aesthetic perfection in a woman - yep, early nose job, strongly suspected Buccal fat removal/jaw implant/recent face, brow lift.

Not being horrible - had some stuff done myself 😁

Angelina & Brad's kids won the genetics lottery though and I saw an erroneous early photo of Clooney and Amal's son - spitting image of a boyhood Cloonster.

Teffe · 09/10/2026 17:25

One of my dc has got really lucky with my best feature - eyes - and dh best feature - lips. So two pleasant enough looking people have produced a model like offspring (who is over 18 so the childlike cuteness gone)

the reverse can happen - I know a few very attractive couples where the children are an unfortunate mix… and as per pp there are quite a few famous couples where this has happened.

Snorlaxo · 09/10/2026 17:26

Have you seen a pic of his grandparents?

My kids have clearly inherited some traits from their grandparents rather than their parents.

Applesonthelawn · 09/10/2026 17:27

Just the way it comes together. Look at Zendaya.

Mydogisagentleman · 09/10/2026 17:28

Our DD is stunning.
Me and DH are average at best.
We are both tall (5'10 and 6 foot). She is a elfin 5'1 size 4-6 with size 2 feet

Sherararara · 09/10/2026 17:28

Is this some kind of semi reverse?
What you actually meant to say was “DH and I are both amazingly attractive but I worry our kids are looking a bit on the ugly side right now? Should I be worried?”

Cailleach1 · 09/10/2026 17:29

When my DS was a baby, I was in a queue. The lady beside me was cooing over him. Oh, he doesn’t look like you at all, look at his lovely little nose. The things that people say.

I just may be biased, but he was a gorgeous baby, he grew up lovely looking too.

Eastie77Returns · 09/10/2026 17:30

On the flip side I know a stunning couple (Italian, both mum and dad were models when younger) who had a baby girl. She was, in her own mother's words, a very unattractive baby. I realise that is not a nice thing for a mother to say about her own child but my friend tends to be brutually honest about things. The daughter grew to look like a female version of her grandad but the features have just not...come out very well. I'm not sure how else to explain it. At one point her mum took her to specialist as she actually thought she had a facial deformity (she doesn't).

Their son, born a few years later, was an absolutely gorgeous baby and is now also a model. Same parents, different inherited genetics. It's just the luck of the draw I guess.

Your features haven't fully formed, so if you think good looking is childlike (most men like small features with big eyes) that will be why. Slightly disturbing post.

Why? I can't make your comment match with a single thing that the OP has actually said. Perhaps it's not @smyshna that has made the disturbing post.

And vice versa, unfortunately. My dad was quite a good looking man. I look very much like him and it is not fortunate.

Oh god and me 😂 my dad was a handsome man but I am plain.

And completely unable to type 😂

Switcher · 09/10/2026 17:30

My DH and I are good looking, and two of our children are good looking. Our daughter however seems to have inherited the least attractive features of us both, but maybe as she grows that will change.

Wildgoat · 09/10/2026 17:32

My husband and I would be considered conventionally attractive and our daughter is too, and it’s fairly the same for most people I know, kids on a par with parents,

howver my neighbours are I’d say just above average and one of their daughters is extraordinarily attractive, thr others more level with their parents.

you can see she’s theirs, but good god, she’s intimidatingly stunning, and I never think that, she’s about five foot ten, very slim and fit, all long limbs, thick honey blonde hair down to her chest and the most perfect facial features, when I first met her I was like bloody hell , your daughter! They were all yeah we know. Every time I see her I still gape. She was over rhe other day and went jogging past me, like something out a model in an advert. 😂

That's quite strange (the height). Are there any short people in your families? DS is taller than you'd maybe expect from his parentage but he looks like my maternal GF who was v tall so that kind of explains it (also has same hair as him which is totally different to me and DH) - kind of fascinating how those genes didnt express at all in my generation and then popped up again

WestwardHo1 · 09/10/2026 17:33

The same as extremely attractive parents with very ordinary offspring.

Well quite. Look at the Queen and Prince Phil. Two notably good looking people and their children...well, not.

blankittyblank · 09/10/2026 17:33

Zendaya is an example of an insanely beautiful person coming from very average looking parents. She obviously inherited the most attractive part of each of their faces!

Gingerteabaghag · 09/10/2026 17:34

Our dd18 is beautiful and her looks have been noted by others since she was small, she regularly has people stop her to tell her how pretty she is.

DH looks like Phil Mitchell and I think I resemble a witch lol! Maybe she was swapped in the maternity ward.

Are his parents quite diverse looking from each other?

Sometimes I think when you mix very different looks you get something in between and diversity is good and should be more attractive. But mostly it's just a genetic lottery.

I am really surprised by siblings and how different they can look. Lots of celebrity siblings are quite plain looking.

Also modern styling plays a part.

Thunderdcc · 09/10/2026 17:35

I used to babysit for the most gorgeous couple and their kids were all really funny looking 😂 genetics are strange!

Cobrakainerd · 09/10/2026 17:15

Weirdly I was pondering this earlier. I often get random thoughts walking the dog!
I was thinking back to my childhood and then when my kids were small, the 'attractive' children tended to grow out of the looks by early 20s adult features changed their looks. , The 'cute and cheeky looking' but not as attractive were reasonably attractive as adults up into late 30s, middle age hitting then. The less attractive kids that weren't cute or attractive seemed to fair better, they seem to be keeping their looks longer, as if they grew into their looks. Men losing their hair, getting fatter, menopausal symptoms, saggy skin..aging at different rates.
Pictures of parents in the past can almost distort our perception. Haircuts in 70/80s were very hit and miss and clothing. Prevalence of hand me downs, homemade clothes, diet, smoking, all made adults look older.

I think this as well. I think you are better off being slightly awkward and growing into your looks. I know a few people who were considered super cute when they were little but now as adults they are definitely not.

Barney16 · 09/10/2026 17:37

Genetics. My dad had two brothers. My dad was and is lovely looking, his brother's not at all.

Donostiera · 09/10/2026 17:38

Lexibletheflexible · 09/10/2026 16:49

Complementary features.

A midwife friend has told me that two beautiful people can make an ugly baby if their features aren't complementary. On the contrary, two average or even ugly people can combine in the right way to have a gorgeous kid who actually looks like them, but just a much more attractive version.

Yup, that's my daughter!

Blimey I feel sorry for the daughter her mum sounds quite unkind.
