I didn’t let my husband eat the meatballs, AIBU?

My husband is an incredibly fussy eater. Basically, he will only eat beige foods and sugar. This makes going out to eat very difficult as well as cooking for him at home. There have been times in restaurants when he will complain there is NOTHING he likes on the menu (despite the menu being extensive) and he ends up eating a bread basket. I am giving you this history as it is important for what happened this evening…

I made meatballs, tomato ragu and spaghetti for dinner. Due to my husbands extreme fussy eating, I don’t usually cook for him and he is left to sort himself out. Me and the children had this for dinner. When I went into the kitchen afterwards, he had started picking at the sauce left in the pan, scooping the meatballs out, scraping the tomatoes and sauce off. I asked him whether he wanted me to make him some pasta, he said no he just wanted to eat the meatballs. I told him to please not, as it will just leave a load of sauce that nobody will want to eat without meatballs in it, and I wanted to save the spare for lunch or dinner tomorrow. He then got annoyed about this and sulked off…

So he should cook himself some meatballs.

It does make sense. Because she now has a pasta sauce that’s got to go in the bin. If he had left the meatballs, someone could have another meal the next day.

I’d tell the big baby to leave the grown up food alone and to stick some chicken dippers in the air fryer. What a drip! I couldn’t cope with this.

Why would the pasta sauce go in the bin. Dont be ridiculous, put something else in the pasta sauce, add some more meatballs or just have the sauce with something else.

YourGreyOtter · 08/10/2026 22:16

Yanbu
He knew the food you cooked wasn’t for him. It’s not fair of him to take part of what could have been a complete meal the next day.

Northernlights19 · 08/10/2026 22:23

Maybe eating the meatballs this time will extend his tastes and next time he'll be willing to try something else new. That's the exact advice I would give....to the parent of a child.

I offered to make him pasta so he could have it as part of a meal, rather than just picking the meatballs out (he was planning on eating all of the ones left), and just leaving sauce. The sauce would have then either ended up getting chucked, or I would have had to do further shopping / cooking so that it was then a proper meal for someone to have the next day…

The only thing I will say is if there's pasta and sauce left over there's still a "proper" meal. Surely there's vegetables etc in the sauce?
Unless you're someone who thinks a meal is only proper if it has meat?

Edamcheese · 08/10/2026 22:35

I think it’s the sauce he doesn’t like as op said he was scraping of the sauce .if he likes meatballs you could make a portion similar to the IKEAs meatballs with mash and gravy .Or rather he can bloody make them why should you cook a special meal for him. I can’t stand fussy eaters unless they have allergies or digestive problems. YANU

Last man like this l was involved with, we ended up with separate lives and l have never looked back! The fussing and contrariness got too wearing. I couldn’t have thrown children in the mix

I know it's not helpful, but when I read threads like these I always wonder how someone can have got in to a relationship and married someone like this without either realising what their eating issues are or realising and thinking it's no big deal.

Surely at some point everyone has a date that involves going to a restaurant. If I went on a date with someone to a restaurant and they behaved like this I think it's doubtful there would be many more dates with him. Ever.

Food, cooking, nice meals. These are all important to me and I couldn't imagine being married to anyone this difficult

Who cares whether he eats just the meatballs, meatballs plus sauce or neither? Very odd that you would tell him what he's allowed to eat.

... because she didn't make any for him due to him being a fussy arse, he was eating every body else's food. Even worse, he just picking out the meatballs and leaving them just with the sauce, surely you can see the problem there?

Wetblanket78 · 08/10/2026 22:36

My son does this not a fussy eater. But after we've eaten he will go and want the meatballs or whatever meat I've done with it. He's not hungry he's just a greedy guts. I don't stop him because when he was little he was underweight He mainly used to eat fruit and veg sausages and if I did something with mince. But he is non verbal autistic and ADHD and hardly ever still. He is 6 foot but still slim. He would be underweight if he didn't eat the extra calories. I just put the remaining sauce in the freezer label it and use it when we need a quick tea. Usually just stir some pasta and have it with a side salad. We don't need to eat meat every night of the week anyway. Does us good to have some meat free days.

SandyCastles · 08/10/2026 22:37

This would piss me right off, the whole thing in fairness, him refusing to eat what you cook, but wanting to take away the best part of the leftovers so they can no longer be used for leftovers, I know someone who has a husband like this with food and she's spent YEARS cooking at least two different meals every night, the final straw came when she was working late from home, instead of making something for them both, he had two bowls of breakfast cereal instead.. She no longer cooks for him at all.. I am amazed it took so long.

It does sound like he has some sort of issue, that may be can't be helped without intervention, but why should that be his children's problem, why take their food?

Why would the pasta sauce go in the bin. Dont be ridiculous, put something else in the pasta sauce, add some more meatballs or just have the sauce with something else.

Part of the problem is though that she doesn't cook for him, because he either complains about it or won't eat it.. it works for them as a family, and for everyone's sanity that he just sorts himself out with whatever he decides is acceptable that day.. no skin off OPs nose.

But if he steals part of tomorrows meal earmarked for her and the kids, meaning she has to cook more to add into it to make it back into a proper meal for the kids.. she's technically cooked his dinner then hasn't she? I don't blame OP for being pissed off about the sneakiness of it.. if he wants to be a fussy fucker that is his issue to solve not everyone else's.

He could ASK her to cook him some extra meatballs or chicken to leave to one side for him, without ruining the meal plan for everyone else for the following day.

Absolutely agree with this. I just wouldn't have any respect for someone who ate like that and clearly had no respect for their body either. Grim.

changeme4this · 08/10/2026 22:52

He sounds immature. Personally I would have told him ages ago that home isn’t a restaurant and he needs to show better eating habits to the children.

im not sure if you want an answer or just wanting to vent, however if I were you I would sit down on the weekend and make a list of what foods he will eat and what days he intends to share or do the cooking load for everyone. If it’s grilled meats/salads and garlic bread then plan evening meals around that.

It might not work but I would try to draw him back into the family fold instead of him thinking he can pick away at leftovers…

Edamcheese · 08/10/2026 22:52

Ps and it’s rude to pick at food especially it wasn’t meant for him and she made an extra portion for the next day for herself and the kids .I am sure if OP realised that he would eat meatballs she would of cooked some extra and put a portion to one side then it would be up to him if he didn’t want the sauce on it.

Well he's the twat who created the need for the extra effort, so why aren't you saying HE should do that, as a kind and fair thing for his wife and children? Why is it her job to solve the issue he created.

No wonder men rule the world with so many pathetic women willing to pander to them.

ThatCosy · 08/10/2026 23:03

He can cook tomorrow.

It's your food and you are also the one who has to cook for the kids whilst he does what he likes - no labour and no teaching the kids about food and meal times. I am not surprised you are outraged. Very disrespectful of him.

Why would you put the sauce in the bin. In this house there is always sauce left over after meatballs so I add chunks of mozzarella to it and it's perfect for the next meal

SonK · 08/10/2026 23:04

You don't make sense, and should have been glad he is trying something less beige like the meatballs.

Doubledenim305 · 08/10/2026 23:44

I hope he has good qualities because he sounds like a PITA.

desperatemum1234 · 08/10/2026 23:51

You appear to have married a giant man baby, OP. I’m sorry that this had happened, but honestly what were you thinking? How has this come to be? He needs to learn basic manners - such as don’t pick the best bits out of a meal, especially one that someone else has made. A child would know better.

Bunny65 · 09/10/2026 01:05

It sounds like an extremely unhealthy diet. What takeaways does he eat? They usually come with some sort of vegetable mixed in.

Biscuitjockey · 09/10/2026 02:47

People on here love making problems over nothing . You can eat the meatballs if you have them how I want you to eat them with pasta? Bore off woman.

Retiredfromearlyyears · 09/10/2026 05:36

I would have been delighted that he had tried a new food! Its a bit unimaginative to say the sauce was wasted! Stick some veggies in and add a little cheese . You've got a whole new meal!

It wasn't his food to cherry pick the best bits from in the first place.
