Am I being mean sending my child to preschool on my non working days ?

Just wondering if I’m being a mean mum here as other peoples assumptions have made me worry.

I work 3 days a week and my ILs look after my toddler while I’m at work. My toddler is now old enough for preschool and I’ve booked my toddler into preschool on my 2 non working days. This just means I get a
bit of a break, time for me so I can do things like go to the gym.

When I’ve been telling people about my child starting preschool, the majority have assumed that it will be on the days I’m working and look quite shocked when I say it’s the days I’m off.

It’s now making me question if I’m being selfish by having those days to myself ? Am I doing something unusual ?

@Summergarden

MUMMY MARTR ALERT!! ‼️

Why do you say she is a martyr for wanting to spend time with her child?

@Tryagain26

OP also wants to spend time with her child. She just also just wants to do other things like go to the gym, etc. nothing wrong with that.

The OP ran in to mumsnet, threw in a grenade and then scarpered , just like with her last thread.

So you’re going from being with your DD three days a week currently with two days with grandparent to three days with grandparents, two playschool and none with you - personally I think that’s awful - it’s different if you were working five days a week and you’d have no choice.

Whatvabout the other 2 days? There are generally 7 days in a week

Timeforachange26 · 09/10/2026 11:57

Tonotcauseissues · 07/10/2026 16:11

I agree with this 100% why do you get 2 days to yourself plsu weekends?

Wheres the child at the weekend then if the OP is gettung that time to herself

SpaceAngel1999 · 09/10/2026 12:07

Seems a bit cheeky to me to expect your ILs to do child care where as on your days off you will pay for care. I would suggest your ILs do two days and you child 2 days at preschool. You get a day off and so do they

ByUniqueViper · 10/10/2026 09:44

You aren't exactly mean but I would say you are selfish. You're in laws are doing you a favour and childcare isnt easy especially as you get older so you should give them a break.
Also do you think its ok to work part time so on your days off you can do what you like? I bet your husband works full time and would probably love a couple of days to do what he likes

Pinkpony123 · 10/10/2026 17:26

So you'll have littlerally no time with your child, could you exchange one of your days with the in laws to a nursery day and if you really want to one of your days off (or just a half day session) What hours would the child be doing?

Pinkpony123 · 10/10/2026 17:29

The rest of the week child is with grandparents though not at home with parents.

Justanotheropinion89 · 10/10/2026 18:13

I suppose it depends on your mental health, as some mums need more “me” time than others. Personally I’d have 1 day with my child, 2 days with the ILs and 2 days at nursery for a better balance. Also you might regret not spending more time with your child once you have all the “me time” in the world.

She can do that on one of her non work days she doesn't need two days. Or she could wait until her child is as school. The preschool years don't last long and you never get them back.

countrylifeorcitylife · 10/10/2026 18:18

In my friendship it’s the norm to have a day off while the kids are in nursery!! You need a break too Op!

Mightymuscle · 10/10/2026 19:36

Oh Yes, got to have free time two days out of 5 especially to go to the gym.

I know people who do it but personally I couldn't! I work 4 days and have her home with me on my day off. They start proper school next year so there is plenty of time for 5 days week, let them be little and at home a day or 2 for that bit longer. Could you have him do 4 days? That way you have one day at home with him and one day for yourself? Time for ourselves is important but their time before starting school full time goes so fast, try and make the most of it.

Oh i just realised he's at your on laws on the other days you're in work and pre school only 2 days? Yes that does seem odd. I'd have him pre school 3 days by this age to get him ready for school, ils one day, you one day

bittertwisted · 11/10/2026 00:24

Cashama · 07/10/2026 14:30

I'm a sahm and most of us send dcs to preschool for social skills and early years learning. Not at all mean to want your child to be able to have those opportunities. We only did mornings at first,
and it's barely enough time for a gym class and a few errands.

I agree this is a perfect scenario, except you aren’t taking the amazing generosity of ILs who have had their own children caring for yours 3 DAYS A WEEK. It’s loads and I would want to take some of that load off them

Puffin69 · 11/10/2026 01:36

Depends on your parents. We're they thinking their workload would reduce once the child went to preschool? Personally I would send them one of your parents days and one of your days off. That way you can stay involved with the mother/child activities or just spending a morning together. In a few years you will miss that time together.

@Tryagain26

You can’t wait 4 years to exercise!! The effects on the body of that would be really bad

lolacherricoke · 11/10/2026 07:33

Why did you have a child if you don’t want to spend time with them? This time is so precious!

MrsS424 · 11/10/2026 08:05

So u have kids to then not ever have to look after them? Or even want a day with them because you want 2 days to yourself. Totally makes sense 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

TrishM80 · 11/10/2026 08:14

This thread must be a wind up.

You dump your kids on your in laws for the 3 days you're working and then dump them in preschool on the 2 days you're off?

Are you taking the piss?!

Why is nobody realizing that there are 7 days in a week not 5. So OP has the child at weekends anyway. And preschool, even if you do a " Full day" Tends to be finished by 3. Else it's just a couple of hours

I really can't see the big deal tbh+

Err who has them before and after preschool and all weekends?

Would you be saying the same of OP was working 5 days? Or is it just the thing on here that mum doing something for herself equals bad?

And what about Dad? Should he have not had the kid either as he's working all week and plays golf at weekends

GoodChocolate · 11/10/2026 08:23

I think you are a CF! You should have used the preschool time to reduce the burden on your ILs!
Does you dh spend 2 full days playing golf every werk?

So exercise after work? Before work? at weekends? Once kids have gone to bed? There are lots of ways to fit exercise into your week if you are determined to!
