Are there any MN's out there that aren't like this?!

Going on about Birkenstocks
Have a family inheritance
Private schools for kids
Saving loads for their Retirement or kids UNI

Yes we are all from different walks in life and that's what makes mums (or mumsnet) great!

I just feel I cannot relate to this site anymore!

I hate the threads about private schools, but i don't really know why. I went to a fairly lower-tier private school myself, there were good things and bad things, i'm fairly ambivalent on the subject. There's just something about the MNers who are die-hard pro private school and insist on their kid going to one, even if it puts them in the ground.

I like threads about money; pensions, earnings, investmements, Wills, etc. Different people's attitudes to money facinates me. I've always worked in finance jobs and to me it's just a tool and i can talk to people about money without mixing any emotion in there. I'm facinated by people who view it as deeply personal and private, like it's the dark arts.

I think we should all be talking about pensions and investments and we should be teaching our kids about it too.

Birkenstock = grounds for divorce
Inheritance = i have had a couple, expecting another imminently.
Private schools = i went to one for secondary
Saving loads = can't save much on ESA and PIP

I don't have kids.

Condolences if you've had someone close die recently.

I like hearing about inheritances, i'd like to be in a position to leave something useful to inherit when i'm gone. I hope you find it helpful, it can't be easy on ESA and PIP.

I don’t own any Birkenstocks (although I do like them!), I do have inheritance coming my way - I come from a very wealthy family but to balance things out DH grew up on the breadline and won’t be inheriting anything really. We don’t have much in the way of savings (~£15k) and both work in the public sector so not likely to up that savings pot apart from the aforementioned inheritance (this is from my grandparents, my parents are very well off but hopefully will be around for absolutely ages yet so I doubt I’ll get any inheritance from them it’s more likely to go straight to my children).

Our children do go to a private school but on a completely free ride, and they will likely go to university which they will probably get funded as well.

I'm intrigued seeing a lot of posters say they don't have kids. Am I taking it too literally thinking that Mumsnet is for parents?

I feel that it started out just for parents but then expanded. So many topics discussed here aren't anything to do with parenting (even this one isn't really) and also some non-parents have issues they benefit from discussing with parents. I originally joined for reasons similar that, I had children in my life that I was in a parental role to and/or needed advice about.

UniquePinkSwan · 08/10/2026 14:35

None of them are true for me

CarbootJunction · 08/10/2026 14:38

I tried DD's Birkenstocks, and they felt like some kind of torture instrument much like her Crocs.

I inherited about £10k from my parents, and blew the lot in weeks.

I don't personally know a single person who has sent their kids to private school.

I have two work pensions, which allowed me to retire 10 years early. Neither of my kids wanted to go to Uni, and neither me or DH went to Uni.

Congrats on the early retirement!

Please tell us more about 'blowing' £10k inheritance 🙏 was it a pretty woman style spending spree?

I had to spend that much just to make one inherited house safe to enter!

Greenjersey · 08/10/2026 16:19

My birkenstocks will need to be prised from my cold dead hands.
Otherwise, none of the above.

Eastie77Returns · 08/10/2026 16:35

I’ve had my Birkenstocks for over a decade. They are the most comfortable things I have ever owned. They are tatty and need replacing really but I’m loathe to break in a new pair.

Inherited a substantial amount from both parents when they died in quick succession not long ago and will be able to retire early.

We now also have enough to privately educate both DC due to the inheritance but both have remained at their state schools. DD’s secondary produced excellent GCSE results, not far behind the closest private school to us, and she is very happy there so don’t see the point of uprooting her just for the sake of it.

I was born on a council estate in East London and suspect my life is very different compared to lot of Mnetters.

Yes agreed.
Also
Having holiday homes.
Having a new swimming pool.
Having a go at the teacher of their child for trying to instill discipline.
Every child according to mumsnet is ND.
I'm jealous of the rich people, I do find MN entertaining though.

thatwasclose · 08/10/2026 16:35

No
Cannot have Birkenstocks as my feet are too big (and I’m sick of wear mens shoes)
Inheritance yes, but had to lose my parents and my sister.
Private school? No chance!
Kids didnt go to uni and my pension is single figures a year. Just about to retire.

SquirrelsEatingConkers · 07/10/2026 06:45

They probably don't talk about it because
a) it's nobody's business
b) they've nothing to flex about anyway (which is all the other twata are doing usually, there tends to be a shocking inability to realise that not everyone lives like them or wants to)
c) with the amount of benefits bashing from the rich bitches, and anyone on minimum wage probably also getting something benefits-wise, they don't want to put themselves in the line of fire. Can't say I blame them really.

I'm working class myself. Not well off but ok, live a simple uncomplicated life and embrace frugality. I reckon birkenstocks are fugly, there's no family trust fund coming for me, went to state grammar school not private school and my DC will also go to state schools, state pension and whatever benefits I'll be entitled to for being so poor in old age is all that's waiting for me upon retirement and I'm not bothered about that in the slightest because I'll have less expenses then. I browse MN for fun, take every OP at face value and think a lot of what I read on here is complete bollocks that's totally impractical in the real world where most people live. It amuses me and passes the time, even if half the posts are chat bots and the others are often drama-llamas with non-problems and trolls.

A woman after my own heart!

I have 4 adult dc, went to state school, never went to uni, and now out earn me. I’ll have to go on benefits when I retire but I really don’t care.

People can be anything they like on the internet. I don’t believe half of the posts on here. 🤷‍♀️

Exactly.

Good thread OP. Some posts have made be laugh.... I think some people are taking the Birks... quite literally 😂 can't believe some are saying they don't even know what they are!

You shouldn't believe everything you read. * *

Polipocket60 · 08/10/2026 18:05

MyLifeHasChanged · 07/10/2026 09:44

Just to make it clear guys I'm not blaming people for having any of these things, we are all different and that's OK.
I'm just finding it harder to relate to mumsnet these days - when I did used to enjoy having a good read over the years!
These days I'm scrolling post after post until there's something that remotely relates to my life.
I just wondered if I was in a minority (single mum, no money, no family, kids yes but that's my lot lol)

There is a single mum board. I find it tends to be quiet though.

MyLifeHasChanged · 08/10/2026 18:41

Thank you all for your replies. It seems I'm not so alone on here after all :)
I haven't been through all the thread but I will once I'm feeling better.
Thank you all again :)

Eesh. Inheritances can be a nightmare as well as a boon.

THEDEACON · 09/10/2026 19:11

Nonenof the above. Im here to see how the other half live lol

YourAdeptFinch · 09/10/2026 19:57

I have many pairs of Birkenstocks, my very difficult feet love them.

I and my two siblings went to private school but my parents got huge reductions as my mum taught there.

One of my children went to private school but only because she got 100% bursary - v brainy child who paid it back in results and is now earning more than I ever will.

I am saving everything I can at the moment to gear up for retirement, am 61 and playing massive catch up with my pension.

I had one inheritance when I was in my 20s and used it to travel the world for a year. I should inherit around £150k in the next 5 years or so but may get eaten up with care costs.

So on the surface I may meet many of your criteria, but lots of 'buts' and context involved.

I certainly don't relate to many of the money posts on here!

fishonabicycle · 09/10/2026 20:04

Never worn a Birkenstock, no inheritance, managed to pay for son's accommodation at uni but nothing else. Small pension, so still working at 61 as is husband (was a plumber, has no pension at all apart from state next year). Son luckily went to grammar school, but we couldn't have afforded private if he hadn't got in. Quite lefty!

LoftyPlumLion · 09/10/2026 20:04

Mumsnet AI slop. Stop it Mumsnet.

fishonabicycle · 09/10/2026 20:07

I do think there are a lot of bullshitters on this site. I can't imagine that so many women with six figure salaries have enough time during the day to tit about on Mumsnet!

Im none of the above (unfortunately: I could do with an inheritance at this point).

Doc Martens rather than Birkenstocks.
No kids (miscarriages instead) & would not have been able to send them to private schools even if I approved of the principle.
