Are there any MN's out there that aren't like this?!

Going on about Birkenstocks
Have a family inheritance
Private schools for kids
Saving loads for their Retirement or kids UNI

Yes we are all from different walks in life and that's what makes mums (or mumsnet) great!

I just feel I cannot relate to this site anymore!

I think there's an awful lot of snobbery on here if that's what you're asking. People who think they're better/cleverer/richer than everyone else and want to let everyone know it.

I've seen some really mean posts too like dissing white bread or frozen vegetables or assuming that Sky engineers are too stupid to learn.

Yep there's definitely a load of s**theads on here. However, I think the majority are just getting by like all of us.

I feel certain you will get a lot of replies from a lot of very normal people. 😊

RubyToDosDay · 07/10/2026 08:49

I’m the other end of the Mumsnet scale - single parent, poor to the point of being on the verge of losing my house, fat, depressed, definitely not got my shit together!

Slightyamusedandsilly · 07/10/2026 08:50

None of those.

piscofrisco · 07/10/2026 08:56

Im none of the above. And I don’t see all that much of it tbh. I think there is a fairly wide range of people here, and a lot of people that make stuff up. For all the snobs there are inverted snobs-all of human life is here really which is why ive stayed around for 20 years!

MaeshoweDragon · 07/10/2026 08:57

I had a family inheritance, my mum left me her wedding ring and £250 - which was a quarter share of her life insurance (man from the Pru).
And we supported the kids through uni as best we could, yep we saved for that, every month since they were born as we knew there might be a need.

WhatterySquash · 07/10/2026 08:59

Birkenstocks - oh yes, love them (or clones as the originals have gone downhill)

Inheritance - I inherited a few grand from my dad and may inherit similar from my mum and an aunt, but not necessarily.

private school - no - can’t afford it but wouldn’t anyway.

Saving - I’m self-employed and have a private pension - I would be mad not to. It’s not huge but better than nothing. I don’t have any spare money to fund DC university, but my ex is wealthier so does help. We’re in Scotland so uni costs aren’t as big.

I don’t think all MNers are the same or conform to a cliche. There are some easy “typical MNer” jibes but what I like about MN is that there are so many different types and you can discuss anything.

OriginalSkang · 07/10/2026 09:00

I think slip on shoes are the most uncomfortable things in the world. I have to scrunch my toes up to keep them on

EmpressStorm · 07/10/2026 09:04

There is about 10 million people on here, I see all walks of life but I also see some people laser focus on a certain demographic and are blind to all other posts

I find MN to be a very different place than the one I joined 21 years ago. It makes me feel quite inadequate at times as though I have failed in life, not sure why I am still here other than for the very helpful Elderly Parent board.

Most people on here now seem a world away from my real life. I live off carer's allowance, I have no funds for a retirement, my dc never went to private school or uni, I shop Vinted not Sezane, Holland Cooper or Nobody's Child (I can't even afford those brands second). I won't receive any big inheritance like so many seem to on here, my mum has advanced dementia and her care costs are huge.

I totally get where you are coming from op, although the longer I frequent MN and compare it to the place it was years ago I am starting to believe so many threads these days are utter bullshit (not some but many).

There are certainly a lot of 🤖(possibly with a Russian accent) on here. You do get a lot of suspect journo posts, trolls and political ones too. Not entirely sure what it achieves as most of us know one when we see one as they are exactly subtle, and we are all extremely set in our ways anyway! It's all a bit pointless.

bigboykitty · 07/10/2026 09:10

Melancholyflower · 07/10/2026 08:16

But do you come on here and 'go on' about them?

Lol no. Maybe I should start though.

Tooldforthisshit · 07/10/2026 09:18

@Scrambledomelette Gina Ford? Super Nanny ? Absolutely not.

My mother lived with us so advice on tap (she didn't like children much!).

I've got a mortgage that's about it really.

Oh no, sorry, it was just when you mentioned being here a long time and legal advice. There was a whole thing really, ages ago, that went from a poster being just generally funny, actually in defence of Gina Ford, but which she believed was defamation of character and she threatened to sue mn. It made a lot of copy in the papers.

Ford became known as 'She who must not be named' for years after. I dont think there has been so much fallout over one funny mn post since.

MyRedBear · 07/10/2026 09:31

No Birkenstocks here most likely trainers as i do 24 hour shifts and need to be comfy.
Inheritance - nope, me and my DH were not blessed with any family who wanted us frankly , we made our own but unlikely the kids will get a great deal.
Education- All kids went to state school all working in decent jobs , youngest is in college but did great on his gcses.
Retirement should be fine, i have a Guarenteed income from the army for life, both state pensions, my army pension plus both of our private pensions.
We both grew up with nothing and both have good jobs now , we lived in a bad area and last year got a beautiful house in the same town that i absolutely love. Our standard of living has gone up but so have our job specs lol x

Gilip · 07/10/2026 09:33

Mumsnet has always had a vocal wealthy group (although some may be lying, there was a poster years ago who posted pictures of her v v expensive bedroom or something like that and it was just a pic from a random hotel online take everything people say online with a pinch of salt) I quite like it in many ways, I’ve had financial and career advice over the years on mn from people who fall into that category, I like the range of opinions.

I am barely above minimum wage, in a very manual job, so I don’t do anything on this list, but I will defend a Birkenstock, yes they’re expensive but shoes for comfort are my biggest splurge in life, you can pry my Birkenstocks and brooks out of my cold dead hands!

MyLifeHasChanged · 07/10/2026 09:44

Just to make it clear guys I'm not blaming people for having any of these things, we are all different and that's OK.
I'm just finding it harder to relate to mumsnet these days - when I did used to enjoy having a good read over the years!
These days I'm scrolling post after post until there's something that remotely relates to my life.
I just wondered if I was in a minority (single mum, no money, no family, kids yes but that's my lot lol)

@Scrambledomelette ah I see. I think that was when I had a very busy life (I don't now!, arse sitting atm). Mine was a stalking legal professional who's GF found a thread I'd written about him. He thought he was Billy Big Bollocks until the police paid him a visit.

I did have fight with someone recently who accused me of not being a net contributor. I offered to show her my tax account going back to 1982. She bogged off of course.

MrsPapillon · 07/10/2026 09:53

No inheritance here. In fact I’ve never had a penny from them since the day I moved out (excluding birthday/Christmas gifts). I had to pay for DF’s funeral.

No private school. Nor did my DCs have expensive hobbies.

I didn’t save for uni (I was a single mum and living hand to mouth) but I did give as much as I could while they were there.

I’ve got a small pension that won’t make much material difference come retirement.

You’ve got me on the Birkenstocks. Though I’ve had two pairs in the past 16 years, so they’ve paid for themselves ten times over.

Blankitout · 07/10/2026 09:53

Have you seen this thread OP?
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5586429-has-the-lifestyle-our-parents-had-become-impossible?page=2
Obviously some MNers inhabit , or aspire to inhabit, a very different world from the one I have any personal experience of.

JuanaSmith · 07/10/2026 09:57

I do like my birkenstocks to look at, although not that comfy!
No private school, inheritance, kids have loans for uni (although top ups are still costing us a fortune). But we're saving shed loads into pensions as I'm in my 50s snd want to retire asap!

We are here OP.
I am fortunate to have family, but I am a lone parent struggling somewhat.
We're OK, but worlds away from some lives I read about on here!

the80sweregreat · 07/10/2026 10:04

Not like this at all. My feet are awful, so never tried Birkenstocks and can’t wear toe posts.
Don’t know anyone in my family or friends who went to private school. My children went to normal state schools.
Dh has a decent pension , but mine is very modest and I regret this. No inheritance at all from any of our parents at all. They didn’t own property. This is unusual where I live ( it’s nowhere that posh ) but most already have it or waiting for it or have trust funds in place and most of dh’s old friends are all probably millionaires now from very humble beginnings ( but parents bought property in the 70s etc)

Gettingbysomehow · 07/10/2026 10:05

Birkenstocks are ugly and Id never wear them.

Totaldramallama · 07/10/2026 10:49

I don't wear Birkenstocks, not have I seen them mentioned frequently on MN. And I don't have kids in private school.

But surely most people are saving for retirement or kids uni if they are able?

Tedsnan1 · 07/10/2026 11:29

InveterateWineDrinker · 06/10/2026 23:02

Ah, I see.

I don't own a pair of shoes which cost less than €400.
