Going on about Birkenstocks
Have a family inheritance
Private schools for kids
Saving loads for their Retirement or kids UNI

Yes we are all from different walks in life and that's what makes mums (or mumsnet) great!

I just feel I cannot relate to this site anymore!

Ah, I see.

I don't own a pair of shoes which cost less than €400.

Nor did Imelda Marcos, but it didn’t do her much good.

I am the polar opposite of that poster, but they are one of my favourite posters. Don't know if it's real or tongue in cheek, I just like their posts!

BeDandyDenimSloth · 07/10/2026 12:35

I love Birkenstocks if they suit your feet they are very comfortable don’t tend to talk about them unless there is a specific post on mumsnet Did get a small inheritance but no to the other two

That's my observation too...alot of Deform, Restore and openly bigoted people on here..

I forgot to say i include myself in the political right. Reform are a necessary evil. Without them the mear mention of the need to control immigration wouldn't be bring discussed as soon it was mentioned even 3 or 4 years ago, the discussion was shut down by crys of racist and xenophobe

Have a family inheritance

You realise that, unless it’s long lost great Aunt Maud, That a family inheritance is usually the result of something unbearably painful?
I remember, in my twenties, a friend once talking rather bitterly about how unfair it was that another of our friends had just been able to put a deposit down on a house, and how far away that felt from the rest of us and our situations at the time. I had to point out that this was only because our friend had just lost her mother after an incredibly difficult and long battle with cancer, and I was pretty sure - our friend was completely broken - that she would rather have her mother still around and still be renting than have a house deposit. Still, envy often clouds people’s ability to sympathise and reason.

I think the point is though that everyone’s parents die. No one is immune from that. However some people inherit, and some don’t. It goes without saying that most people would rather still have their loved ones here, but I’d also say that the majority would rather inherit than not.

Yogafiend · 07/10/2026 13:01

@MyLifeHasChanged - I think most of us find it hard to relate to one thing or another on here - especially certain boards, I just avoid them because I find people can be really cruel and they aren’t really interested in a exchange of ideas. So I pick and choose what to read and what to engage in.

I shan’t get an inheritance. My mother’s care costs have taken everything. Do I think that we need huge reform in how care for the elderly works? Yes. Will I spend my days envious of those that got inheritance? No.

Tonty · 07/10/2026 13:17

Going on about Birkenstocks
I have Primarkstocks

Have a family inheritance
None.

Private schools for kids
Yes, but they've left now, does that help?

Saving loads for their Retirement or kids UNI
No retirement savings.

EmailsaysOOO · 07/10/2026 13:20

We would never have saved for kids to go to Uni. Mind you we did manage to support them a bit with food / drink/ living , think it was £50 a week.
All the rest, nope.

Same here, there is no inheritance. My parents don’t have anything to leave.
The point is that people will often say ‘yes but they’ve had to lose a parent to inherit’. Everyone loses their parents (unless they die first of course, like my brother), but not everyone inherits.

OriginalSkang · 07/10/2026 13:25

Does someone spending £400 on shoes need to save for retirement or uni? That seems like an amount you'd only spend on shoes if you have literal money to burn

tinseltitss · 07/10/2026 13:29

None of those relate to me. I live from payday to payday, no matter how much I try to save something always comes along that needs that money. New car as my other one died completely, dentist fees as I had a tooth that snapped etc.

I'd never want a family inheritance as it would mean loosing one of my parents and no one really wants that. My DD never went to private school, I've never owned Birkinstocks although I do have a work pension.

Single50something · 07/10/2026 18:00

Me! Solo parent with no maintenance so all on me. Hence skint. I went to public school but no way could I afford it. Dont like birkenstocks..but have got into crocs as they are comfy.
Oh and no inheritance..so still skint :( I do work 2 jobs but that just pays bills really ..so no savings. Any disaster is a disaster as no space on credit. Sounds terrible but im mostly happy lol :)

Emeraldforest · 07/10/2026 18:37

None of those!
Some of my family are a bit but I still love them ! Have had some small legacies but all gone on bringing up children on my own.

AutumnAugury · 07/10/2026 18:39

I have no idea about anyone else, but we were brought up not to talk about any of these subjects.

My worry is that we're living in a increasingly polarised world, which seems to be shifting further and further right (India, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, US, Netherlands, etc etc) and dial of what's was morally and socially acceptable is moving too.

Personally I think it more about divide and conquer..while you and I are worried about immigration, the rich are getting richer, while telling us that the real problem is the guy earning £10p/h.

PumpkinWanker · 07/10/2026 18:43

Love Birkenstocks
can’t relate to anything else!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/10/2026 18:58

Birkenstocks would be highly impractical on a farm. Also, some of them look suspiciously like Jesus sandals. Around here, it's Redbacks and Blundstone boots, or steel toe-capped wellies.

Any family inheritance is being spent by older family members on having a good time before they die!

Apparently, I come across as being of the "private school type" because of my accent, but I am not. I would consider private schools from 7+ if any of the nearest ones were Welsh-medium, as I'd like my Welsh-born DC to be fluent (I am English, but persisting with learning Welsh).

I do have a private pension (started in my late twenties; a small amount goes into it on pay-day), but that's mainly because I don't want to be a poor pensioner.

pinkypoo8 · 07/10/2026 19:23

"Slightly more to the right politically then you would expect " rather sanctimonious, What exactly do you mean by that - that sounds like some kind of slur that you are passively aggressively trying to make - do you consider yourself above those who may be "politically to the Right?" And what do political allegiances have to do with this Post exactly?

fumingrightnow1 · 07/10/2026 19:33

No I'm normal

Greenandyellowday · 07/10/2026 20:05

Have never owned, or wanted to own, a pair of Birkenstocks.
Also have never owned other middle class signifiers such as:
A gilet
A **ing baby sling
But used to wear the same wellies as King Chazzer (not his actual wellies - his feet are too small) until they moved production to China and became utter crap.
No inherited cash left - spent it on public school fees. Oh the irony.
Part of an enduring line of staunch Labour voters who are also public school attendees - double irony.
Not a high earner at all.
Don't have a massive house with umpteen "ensuites" or a massive Range Rover type car.
Hate the MN phrase "crusty bread" and, because of DSs, couldn't make a chicken last 30 mins, let alone 3 days.
So I guess I'm a "yes" to just one of your criteria - schooling 🥹

AgileSloth · 07/10/2026 20:18

I didn't know what birkenstocks were..and none of the others relate to me...mum of 5 brought up on the breadline..sent kids to college but that's as far as it went..sahm till kids left home..then a part time job for luxury..like holidays..bought my ex council house as a mortgage was cheaper than renting..husband worked hard and grabbed any overtime going to feed and clothe us.we don't believe in debt..Will help anyone if possible..as long as they are willing to help others....

beautifuldaytosavelives · 07/10/2026 20:25

I very much enjoy a Birkenstock, but no to the rest.
