Chicken nuggets etc

Can I ask why people feed their kids this shite? Why don’t you start off weaning on proper food and then just serve up whatever you have cooked for the whole family? I really cannot understand this

I don’t just mean chicken nuggets. My own kids do it with their kids. why sausages , burger, chicken nuggets etc? Just cook a nice meal with vegetables. If kids aren’t used to it, they won’t eat it so introduce it immediately to

Maybe you should have brought your children up better then, if they have become lazy parents themselves 😇 You obviously failed to instil a good attitude around food and nutritional habits.

Lack of time to cook, lack of education / access to real food.

Enshittification.. entropy etc.

It was me. They are processed meat. The beef or pork is minced, that's the process. But I suspect that's a touch of the 'tism on my part in my being a bit pernickety. But I suspect most of us here are talking about birdseye/ Iceland/ farmfoods/ supermarket own brand type burgers and sausages. If you're going to complicate matters with posh versions, that's just not on now

Mince with salt, pepper and shaped into circles isn't posh. Mince is about £6 a kilo for higher fat one. Which I think is the cost of premade burgers anyway

I used to think like you. Had two children that ate a vast range of food, loved home cooking for them. Thought people couldn't be arsed when they fed their kids things like chicken nuggets. Then I met my third. Started out eating everything then hit the age of two and refused everything bar three meals, one of which was chicken goujons with peas. The other two meals were pesto pasta and a Yorkshire puddings with peas and sweetcorn. That was it.

They have started branching out now they are a bit older but I remember those days very clearly and it served me right to be a smug mum.

Sometimes families can't all eat together like one parent doesn't get home from work until bedtime so kids have to eat first.

@Goldengirl123 chicken burgers are a favourite in our house; organic chicken fillets which we marinate in Nando peri peri sauce, oven cook and serve with salad in a brioche bun.

Not all burgers are unhealthy!

Gosh, how do you see all the plebs from so high up there on your horse?

Get over yourself. People do their best.

Meh a chicken nugget every now and then is fine. I don’t know anyone only serving up that kind of food.

GameOfJones · 04/10/2026 21:40

But we absolutely need to be demonising upfs and junk food. We cant exactly pretend it's all fine to protect people's feelings can we?

I totally agree with you but the issue is that people get defensive when confronted with facts, as can be seen on this thread.

I absolutely despair at the state of most children's packed lunches. It's completely standard to see a ham sandwich, bag of monster munch, kit kat, frube and maybe some fresh fruit. They're not only full of expensive UPF crap but they are absolutely stuffed full of packets..... snacking culture for kids (and adults) has gone totally barmy. It wasn't any better when I was having packed lunches in the 90s.... I'd get a ham sandwich an apple and a chocolate biscuit but I'm also the generation of adults that now are struggling with obesity and our children's generation are getting fed the same junk but twice as much!

I know cooking from scratch takes a bit more time. DH and I both work and our DDs are in primary school and do various clubs. Life is busy. But at the end of the day we prioritise nutrition and eating less rubbish. Beans and scrambled egg on wholemeal toast is cheaper, healthier and quicker to cook than chicken nuggets and chips but you can't point that out without a wave of "be kind" responses. The issue is that "being kind" is resulting in a generation of kids that are some of the most obese in Europe and it's setting them up to fail.

I cooked loads of nice and nutritious things from scratch when weaning and my child loved most of it. When I went back to work I did need some more convenience (+ was probably a bit smug) so thought a nug here and there would be OK as they still ate such a good variety. Then the child turned 2, started refusing nearly everything they used to eat and not entertaining anything new (and by god did we try). I just wanted them to eat something. I continued to offer stuff (still do) but if the only way the cucumber or peas were accepted was with a nug or fish finger then so be it. They’re slowly coming back around now. 🤷

Sometimes chicken nuggets is what I have cooked for the whole family 😂time, money, other constraints.
Other days I cook a meal that even you might be proud of.
