Chicken nuggets etc

Can I ask why people feed their kids this shite? Why don’t you start off weaning on proper food and then just serve up whatever you have cooked for the whole family? I really cannot understand this

Good grief why are you so triggered. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but this is a casual chat forum. I’m not the obesity fairy and I have no power to ‘solve the issue’

Because it’s types like you that perpetuate stereotypes and allow the class structure of the UK to continue. Demonising chicken nuggets and burgers will not solve a health crisis and neither will describing children as enormous. Forgive me for caring!

Sirzy · 04/10/2026 19:24

When ds was a baby I was very cautious of him eating what I eat and ensuring he had a well balanced diet.

now at 17 he has been tube fed for 8 years and I would love him to eat a chicken nugget. Sometimes these things are out of parents hand s

What on earth are you talking about? My family is solidly working class. We were dirt poor when I was younger, we lived off lentils poured over rice as big bags were cheap. My mum would never have allowed us to get fat. Why are YOU saying it’s a class issue.

O00ps · 04/10/2026 19:27

"Your own kids do this with their kids"?!
Do you mean feed them chicken nuggets, burgers and sausages?
If so, why didn't they learn from you?
What do they say the reason is?

We have one out of three of ours that has issues with some foods, so chicken nuggets do feature some days. I'm sure this is the same for many families. Every night would be concerning but occasionally isn't too bad in my family. (They ate very healthy food until they didn't eat much at all and lost too much weight)

Maybe the parents are working and too tired to cook a homemade meal each night. Maybe the children have issues around food.

It's not great and I wish processed food hadn't been brought to the market, but burgers can be 100% meat and sausages high in meat, even nuggets aren't as bad as they used to be, depends what you are buying. But yes processed often would be a worry

emuloc · 04/10/2026 19:22

Nothing wrong with them at all, if they are just mince, onions, and seasoning.

Yes no problems there. A burger is just meat and bread really. And chips (should) just be potato and a little oil.

I think the problem is more the sweet stuff. All of the super overweight kids here seem to be addicted to sugar. One kid is absolutely enormous, morbidly obese - he waddles as his legs won’t ‘walk’ properly, they’re literally buckled under his weight. His mum still collects him from school every day with a packet of Oreo’s.

Please explain how to make a sausage or a burger without putting the meat through a process first.

I buy sausages from our local butcher. The ‘processing’ is just mincing the pork, adding some herbs and putting it into a casing. It’s no less healthy than a pork chop.

I make my own burgers with beef mince, onion, herbs and an egg. How is that more processed than say homemade Spag Bol?

Fivebyfive2 · 04/10/2026 19:29

Goldengirl123 · 04/10/2026 18:54

Yes I can. When our kids were little they didn’t have these choices. I really don’t understand it

I'm 38, my parents are mid 70s and when I was a kid loads of people had burgers, nuggets etc, so unless you're in your 80s or older I don't think this is true.

I've got very little skin in this game op, my son, although "picky" actually won't eat nuggets, burgers, sausages or fish fingers. His favourites are pasta dishes, mushroom pizza, beans, scrambled eggs and mushrooms with toast and vegetable curry. He does love chips and birdseye vegetable fingers with tomatoes sauce though 🙂

I did and still do eat burgers, fish fingers sandwiches and even potatoes waffles sometimes though - I'm not unhealthy or overweight. I ate/eat those things in between other meals like roast meat and veg, pasta, stir fry, curry, eggs, casserole, risotto, paella etc.

Sometimes it's not being able to cook, sometimes it's money or time being scarce, sometimes it's issues with getting kids to eat just anything, often it's a mix of all those things.

It’s not, but that’s like comparing a loaf of freshly baked sourdough with a bag of UPF white sliced bread. Same name but totally different products nutritionally.

You’re incredibly ignorant if you think there isn’t a classism issue with the demonising of UPFs and ‘junk’ food.

Why, do you think working class people are born with a gene that makes them addicted to Birdseye!

But we absolutely need to be demonising upfs and junk food. We cant exactly pretend it's all fine to protect people's feelings can we?

I agree. When I was growing up it was always the family with more money than us eating junk, junk is expensive 🤷‍♀️ 5 bananas; £88p. A pack of jammy dodgers, £1

Overthebow · 04/10/2026 19:35

Surely most people are giving their DCs a mixture of food? My DCs eat chicken nuggets and burgers sometimes, but they also have homemade meals that we make from scratch like spaghetti bolognese, casseroles, curry and rice, shepherds pie, lasagne, roast dinner, stir fry. A variety of different types of meal is good.

Goatsarebest · 04/10/2026 19:38

The real evil in our midst is carbonated sugar laden drinks. They are adictive and have huge levels of sugar and stabilisers and other chemicals. They affect your energy and concentration and make you crave sugar whilst rotting your teeth and your stomach. Later you get diabetes and obese. They also make you lethargic and have a big impact on mental health. Ours never had them and don't now as adults, thankfully. If you can make sure your children don't get an early addiction to these then you are half way there to keeping them healthy.

No just wondering. To me it’s lazy parenting

I also think snacking is a MASSIVE issue now. Kids never build up hunger before a meal, they snack endlessly then just eat a couple of mouthfuls of their meal before yet more snacks. It’s not good for you to keep your stomach half full 24/7.

Lots of fizzy drinks are sugar free these days. Not great, but not the issue they once were.

Because he's under a dietician with food restrictions due to medical reasons as well as borderline ARFID.

He doesn't eat wholemeal, vegetables, pulses, beans etc.

Thank god for chicken nuggets and white bread.

As I said, I don’t understand why it has to be every night. Of course once a week or even twice but some kids have this every night so

You must have some inkling as to why your kids feed your grandkids the way they do. It isn't actually a mystery to you is it?
