Can I ask why people feed their kids this shite? Why don’t you start off weaning on proper food and then just serve up whatever you have cooked for the whole family? I really cannot understand this

I don’t mean once in a while but every night?

What have your kids been fed this week?

Can I ask you why the judgy/goady thread?

Because the ‘everyone is just doing their best, never judge’ has resulted in a generation of obese kids with fillings which will of course cost the NHS over the next 70 odd years now?

And posting judgemental nonsense on mumsnet will solve that how?

I don’t just mean chicken nuggets. My own kids do it with their kids. why sausages , burger, chicken nuggets etc? Just cook a nice meal with vegetables. If kids aren’t used to it, they won’t eat it so introduce it immediately to

Did you teach your kids how to cook?

Denim4ever · 04/10/2026 19:09

We have never served chicken nuggets or fish fingers as a meal. It's not the kind of food we eat. DC never requested it either.

WaffleMacGubbins · 04/10/2026 19:09

AgeingMillennial · 04/10/2026 19:04

Absolutely, people are amazed my kids don’t eat beige rubbish but that’s because I never buy it! They’re used to eating what we do - proper curries, stews, soups, roast dinner, risottos and so on.

I mean there's nothing wrong with emergency freezer food or a takeaway when you've had one of those days. But it's not a healthy way to eat and the vast majority of adults know that.

NopeNotThat · 04/10/2026 19:10

Goldengirl123 · 04/10/2026 18:54

Yes I can. When our kids were little they didn’t have these choices. I really don’t understand it

How old are you that this wasnt happening when your kids were at school!? I'm ~40 and was raised on burger/sausage/nuggets, chips and beans, pot noodles, supernoodles. I was also "the fat kid", as well. And we were on benefits. But it was better than my parents childhood.

It might also piss on your chips to know that my sibling and I both left school at 16, earn above the national average, and are home owners.

But please, don't let those facts piss on your "lazy families have poor outcomes" narrative.

I’m currently teaching my 7 year old; yesterday she learned how to make scrambled eggs and crack them properly etc

KermitsABadInfluence · 04/10/2026 19:12

Sounds like a parenting fail on your part op. Why don't your kids know better?

Passaggressfedup · 04/10/2026 19:12

Because I was a single mum, working FT in a demanding job, including commuting, with no support from ex and family. Some things had to give.

They don't seem to have been negatively affected. In their mid 20s and both love cooking and into healthy eating.

I did a great job bringing them up otherwise, and they've forgiven me for eating process food a few times a week!

There is world between the one of feeding kids cheap nuggets, kebabs, red bull and Coco pops every day and the one where they're eating organic lentils, kale and foraged mushrooms.

But equally the softly softly approach hasn’t worked either. The kids around here aren’t just slightly overweight or chubby, they’re actually enormous. The boys are like James Corden at his biggest, and there’s a 13 year old girl up the road who must be a woman’s size 16 or so.

The kids next door to me are stick thin and seemingly exist on takeaways, sweets and cans of coke 🤷

So? That doesn’t prove there’s not a link between unhealthy eating and obesity, it’s a fact that there is.

I weaned all 3 of mine on annabel karmel books. Two have a varied and good diet o would say ( We all love a McDonald's tho) one is a very fuzzy eater. Very beige types of foods etc. He's ten now and he would honestly not eat anything else ( we have tried this in the past and he just didn't eat for a few days:) So please tell me what it should do.

catdistributionsystem · 04/10/2026 19:18

My toddler will happily eat everything I put in front of him, any cuisine, with every seasoning under the sun. I cook 99% of our meals from scratch (I hate that expression, but I can’t think of an alternative right now)

However, does he have fish fingers occasionally? Of course he does, because sometimes kids get HANGRY, and it happens faster than I can make a bloody curry.

So chatting shit about children who have no control over the food they are fed makes you feel better? And you don’t care to try and solve the issues related to childhood obesity, instead you’d like to ‘discuss’ (aka bitch) about it

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 04/10/2026 19:20

Ive got 2 DC. Both weaned/ raised eating the same home cooked meals. Yet one has a list as long as my arm of things he doesnt eat. The other eats everything other than some cooked fruit and dried fruit.

Both have always preferred chicken breast/thighs over nuggets. DS2 loves liver, steak and kidney, heart and so on. DS1 ate that stuff until he went veggie.

So it's not always a case of "feed them what you eat" . I did, one still ended up fussy.

Nothing wrong with burgers unless people buy some super crap patties. I don't agree with demoniskng perfectly fine food like burger

Good grief why are you so triggered. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but this is a casual chat forum. I’m not the obesity fairy and I have no power to ‘solve the issue’

Nothing wrong with them at all, if they are just mince, onions, and seasoning.
