To pull DC out of school for 6 months and go to New York?

Hi all. I have 3 DC, DS7, DS4 and DD18months.

I’m a SAHM (plan was to go back to work PT when DD was 2/2.5 and in nursery/childminder).

DS1 has had a tough school life so far, he was getting bullied but school weren't doing anything about it and then when he hit back one day he was the one who got into trouble even though the bullying had gone on for months. I Know hitting isn’t great but I wasn’t happy about just him being punished. We moved schools and he’s been really unsettled and been saying he doesn’t want to go. This school is also a not great school in general but the better schools in the area and slightly further away unfortunately had no spaces.

DS2 has started reception at the same school and is doing okayish but could he doing better.

DH has been offered a 6 months contract in new york, expenses paid etc including accommodation, he can either go on his own but then potentially not see the DC or me for a long time which they would struggle with as he’s a good involved dad or take them out of school for 6 months and go or not go at all and turn it down.

I’m honestly in 2 minds, part of me thinks it’s a mad idea but another part of me thinks it’s a good opportunity and we’d be mad to turn it down, because he’d get better money etc and we could potentially put the extra money into savings.

Wwyd?

Do it. It s a great experience and a good break for you all. You can homeschool your oldest in that time or enroll him in a school there.

jonestly travelling is such a great experience. If I was in your shoes, i d do it in a heartbeat with no looking back.

i have a lot of friends who cane back from NYC and it is a great city to live with kids exactly like London.

oooh I am so jealous of your opportunity 😆

Normally I’d say go but I think only 6mths is too disruptive for young children . The short timescale would be my issue .

Highonmyownsupply · 03/10/2026 15:24

Just make sure the visa situation is ok and that it covers you and the children, not just the employee. AFAIK 3 months is the max on a tourist visa.

BarbaraUsher · 03/10/2026 15:25

Do it.

inerja · 03/10/2026 15:25

Why can’t they attend some kind of pt provision in nyc so they’re not completely out of education?

EweCee · 03/10/2026 15:25

Its an adventure, do it. As long as you keep reading, reading and more reading at this age.

pavillion1 · 03/10/2026 15:25

I’d do it in a heartbeat

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/10/2026 15:26

I’d be gone in a second ! Can start again when you come back !!

I’m the opposite, given their ages and the short time frame, I would definitely go but look up all the educational stuff and be prepared to read and do motor skills stuff a lot. Write from the Start is good for motor skills. I would pay for a remote uk homeschool project and do that but just enjoy NYC. The met and other museums have incredible kids resources. NYC is so pricey these days that if they are prepared to pay accommodation and health care I’d snap that up. You’ll remember it for the rest of your life.

SukiPook · 03/10/2026 15:28

I'd say go for it
A change is as good as a rest!

TwinklyAmberSloth · 03/10/2026 15:28

Do it!!

You only live once. Life is too short to pass up an opportunity like this.

Will you all be covered by healthcare? What will you do with your house? What about accommodation in NY?

BalakayAARon · 03/10/2026 15:28

I'd go for 6 months at those ages, especially as you haven't got a school place that you'd hate to lose.

I even say that as someone who lived in the US for 18 months and couldn't wait to come back. It wasn't NYC, and it wasn't for a short fixed term.

Is there any chance the job could become permanent? If there is, I'd think more carefully in case you get stuck there.

arethereanyleftatall · 03/10/2026 15:29

you might be able to, idk - but - can you definitely get back in to a school that you want after 6 months, or do you have to take whatever they give you?

Hippeedippeemee · 03/10/2026 15:30

I think go OP, the kids are young it will be fun, maybe the only chance you will get with the kids at these ages. Life is short, expenses paid, its an amazing opportunity for a different outlook on life for you all. Also helpful you aren't currently working!

letterboxes · 03/10/2026 15:30

omg i would do this without even thinking much about it. nyc & surrounding state is amazing, great experience for you all.

runnerducky · 03/10/2026 15:30

If he’s getting extra money, could you look at getting a tutor for some stuff while you’re out there? Presuming you aren’t working, then you can maybe get a homeschool schedule going so they don’t fall behind with that sort of thing. So I would do it. None of us would want to be away from each other for six months and NY is a fantastic place with so much to do. Enjoy! And deal with what happens at the end of the six months when it comes. Who knows what the future holds!

Nofeckingway · 03/10/2026 15:30

Absolutely do it . Very child friendly , adaptive city . Try international schools or fee paying ( provided company pays ) . Many many parents there with individual arrangements . Schools also based around UN employees - check it out .

outerspacepotato · 03/10/2026 15:35

Absolutely no. Your husband goes, 6 months will pass quickly, but don't fuck around with your kids' schooling. The oldest already has issues and the second might.

If it's NYC, not a snowball's chance in hell. It's extremely expensive. You'll eat up that extra salary feeding 5. Would he be provided housing for 5? Or for 1 and you guys pay through the nose for extra. What about healthcare? We pay more than a mortgage for healthcare for a family. And the subway isn't cheap.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/10/2026 15:35

Do it! We went abroad for 3-12 months a few times with DDad’s work- France, Holland, Texas, but not after I was 10- so we stayed out from what’s now Y6. We were fortunate that we dropped back into the same school on our return. We went to school in all those places. The US has the advantage of speaking English. It could be an excellent opportunity to reset for your older chiildren.

Xanhi · 03/10/2026 15:48

I think living in New York with 3 kids for 6months, while your husband is working all day, could be an extremely lonely experience. It is too short a time to put them in school and get to know people but quite a long time to be living in a city where you don't know anyone. Your DS has already had one school change, so more distribution could be quite unsettling for him. I would go out there for holidays and your husband could come back for some weekends.
