AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

It's so nice to see a thread on here praising white bread for a change. Too often on here people act like you're giving your kids crack cocaine if you admit to feeding them supermarket bread!

Always reminds me of the Billy Connolly sketch too!

Sorry, as unlikely as other posters think it is crisps in sandwiches have completely passed me by. I’m in the south west. Is it a more regional thing?

me too and no it is not regional although the brand of crisps used may be

This. Not divine. But good. Especially if I've been ill. Milk loaf is the best ill toast. Insubstantial. Good with chicken soup.

I was ill this week and eating heinz tomato soup and thinking how weird and sugary it is. UPF foods are strange but I don't think myself better than other people because I prefer homemade artisan version.

Yet heinz tomato soup is a good comfort food for colds, though I usually prefer homemade!

HoraceCope · 03/10/2026 09:12

if i have a cheese sandwich and a bag of crisps, i probably put some crisps inside the sandwich for added flavour and crunch

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Really? Plain walkers in cheap white bread is lovely!
I also love Waitrose Olive bread with smoked salmon pate, and buy my white bread from the bakery as it has no preservatives… and seeded shop loafs for school sandwiches… but every so often I will eat a cheap white bread crisp sandwich and use the rest for toast, I thought everyone had tried this… it’s lovely.

Newlittlerescue · 03/10/2026 09:14

My bread intake is 50% sourdough (made by me) and 50% Warburtons white plastic bread. Love them both. Nothing beats a fish finger and ketchup sandwich on white plastic bread.

borborygmus1 · 03/10/2026 09:14

They can eat it because they're poor. When you're poor, you don't have many choices and Jason's sourdough is off the cards.

Giggorata · 03/10/2026 09:15

Nothing else fries so crisp and golden.

Cheap white bread is the best bread for a crisp sandwich, plenty of butter and either salt and vinegar Walkers or Cheese Wotsits. It just isn’t as good if you use a nicer, fancier, more flavourful bread it needs the texture and plainness of the cheap version.

A cheesy Wotsit sandwich! Mind blown...

Love a crisp sandwich but Wotsits never entered my mind. Off to the corner shop now

Sunbringer · 03/10/2026 09:17

Well it’s all fortified with iron, folate, calcium and a bunch of other stuff so it’s actually a really handy vehicle for meeting RNIs.

I prefer sourdough that I make myself or seeded whole grain but a fishfinger sandwich on white is not to be sniffed at.

Not what we are talking about, but my homemade tomato soup tasted horrible really metallic! I just have tins now, with white bread obviousl.

Bestfootforward11 · 03/10/2026 09:18

So many reasons why someone might eat such white bread when you do not.
Key takeaway: not everyone is the same

No it’s been something everyone I’ve known in Yorkshire, Lancashire, London and even Japan… all that I’ve lived in… have done. For at least 30+ years. You’re just a bit odd.

Jiddles · 03/10/2026 09:22

Don’t be such a food snob. It just depends what you’re used to.

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

What never? Never ever heard of people putting crisps in a sandwich ? Are you a small child? Housebound with no contact with the outside world ? Brought up on top of a mountain? How have you never heard of this?!! Are you British ?

NightsinthegardensofSpain · 03/10/2026 09:25

Nice neighbour. Snobby you.
Not everybody can afford £3.50 on sourdough

Whynottryagain · 03/10/2026 09:25

In my case it was because that's what I was given as a child so I didn't really realise there was an alternative.

Fried bread. Of course. With eggs that have a runny yolk you can dip it into. Lovely.

Njuy · 03/10/2026 07:13

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

OP I got what you were saying, which was not criticising your neighbour.

I totally agree btw. I have a bread maker and it’s made it impossible for me to eat that kind of bread now as it made me realise it’s not even really bread?? It’s also not filling or nutritious.

not sure why shit white bread is a hill everyone seems to want to die on.

TorroFerney · 03/10/2026 07:09

Gosh i bet you’ve never heard of a pie bap either!

Wigan kebab 🙂

FrankieNeverRelax · 03/10/2026 07:13

You’re a snob op

How is it snobby to say you don’t like something? I can’t stand white bread - ironically for the same reason many posters have said they like the cheap white bread, it’s the texture. It makes me gag😂 I actually can tolerate white bread toasted but not the cheapest stuff op is talking about because the texture in the middle even when toasted 🤢

Also, while I’m sure there are people who buy this type of bread because they like it (plenty of evidence on this thread!)I’m pretty sure a lot of people buy it because it’s cheap. It’s nutritionally poor, it’s a UPF which we all know isn’t good for us - balance is everything, but bread is a staple not something that people eat occasionally.

It is far from snobby to say that this isn’t good enough, everybody should have access to affordable good quality food basics. It’s an absolute disgrace that in 2026 this isn’t the case - poorer families often have nutritionally inferior diets through necessity as it’s what they can afford. I’m sure people will come on and say they can feed a family of 6 a nutritionally balanced diet for a fiver a week but it’s not just about the components - it’s possible to buy raw ingredients such as vegetables, grains etc but then there are energy costs in making raw ingredients into meals that cheap UPF foods don’t have (I’m talking in terms of nutrition and choice, I have no issue with people actively choosing to eat a UPF rich diet, just that often it’s not an active choice).

Really? You've missed out, food of the gods.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 03/10/2026 09:33

I like it. Toasted, butter, cheese and crumpled tayto crisps, cup of tea. Yummy.
I don’t eat it often as I eat a lot of bread, I stick with the high fibre, or a loaf of tiger bread. I sometimes have sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

LancashireButterPie · 03/10/2026 09:35

As they say..."No good deed goes unpunished".

Your neighbour bought you a loaf, you started a thread complaining about it.

I hope they read this.

CrotchetyQuaver · 03/10/2026 09:36

I love this cheap white bread toasted with butter and marmite, or for fish finger sandwiches. Known as plastic bread in our house going back to something my mother said back in the 70's when she was trying to wean us on to brown bread. It definitely has its place but we don't have it every day
