AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Honestly? Crisp sandwiches are famous.

Having {nly eaten toastie bread or sliced tiger loaf for years I felt the same when my son bought kings mill medium sliced. It's so thin it's unbelievable. Even Warburton toastie is lame, it has to be thick stuff

How is it snobby to say you don’t like something? I can’t stand white bread - ironically for the same reason many posters have said they like the cheap white bread, it’s the texture. It makes me gag😂 I actually can tolerate white bread toasted but not the cheapest stuff op is talking about because the texture in the middle even when toasted 🤢

Also, while I’m sure there are people who buy this type of bread because they like it (plenty of evidence on this thread!)I’m pretty sure a lot of people buy it because it’s cheap. It’s nutritionally poor, it’s a UPF which we all know isn’t good for us - balance is everything, but bread is a staple not something that people eat occasionally.

It is far from snobby to say that this isn’t good enough, everybody should have access to affordable good quality food basics. It’s an absolute disgrace that in 2026 this isn’t the case - poorer families often have nutritionally inferior diets through necessity as it’s what they can afford. I’m sure people will come on and say they can feed a family of 6 a nutritionally balanced diet for a fiver a week but it’s not just about the components - it’s possible to buy raw ingredients such as vegetables, grains etc but then there are energy costs in making raw ingredients into meals that cheap UPF foods don’t have (I’m talking in terms of nutrition and choice, I have no issue with people actively choosing to eat a UPF rich diet, just that often it’s not an active choice).

Shop bought whole grain is as much UPF as white bread.

I can eat it easily, partly because I find wholewheat and seeded breads have a horrible texture! They go claggy in my mouth. I don't go for the cheapest of the cheap- typically I get toastie bread- but I wouldn't turn it down. Not that I don't love a nice white sourdough or ciabatta, but a white loaf is my go-to for sandwiches and toasties.

Are you just discovering now that different people like different things?

I love really decent bread. I also love old fashioned party sandwiches on shit bread.

CrowsInMyGarden · 03/10/2026 09:43

@user1497787065 I love cold baked bean and salt and vinegar crisp sandwiches. Not in white bread though.

Jk987 · 03/10/2026 09:46

You don’t need to eat white bread after a stomach bug, that’s a myth. Wholemeal is far better.

Do you live under a rock?? Try it, you won’t regret it!

Nelliemellie · 03/10/2026 09:46

Any leftover you can make garlic bread, bread pudding, croutons.

Genevieva · 03/10/2026 09:48

The only things I use cheap white bread for are breadcrumbs and puddings (summer pudding / bread and butter pudding etc).

BobbiBiscuits · 03/10/2026 09:50

Cheap white sliced bread is my treat. It tastes so good with butter and as a sandwich

Crisps (my current most favourite is Wotsits), tomato ketchup, coleslaw, ham and mustard - any of these on sliced white bread. What a prize!

BobbiBiscuits · 03/10/2026 09:52

Oh yes beans on toast - must be white sliced bread toast. Maybe thicker version than sandwiches. You don't want your sandwiches too bready.

omg they taste so much better as triangles..

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 03/10/2026 09:53

Fried cheap white bread with marmalade on it. Haven't eaten it in a long time (stupid diet) but it's a thing of beauty.
Excuse me whilst I weep into my yoghurt and bloody muesli.

BobbiBiscuits · 03/10/2026 09:56

Now I am craving a white sliced bread sandwich for lunch, with a glass of Vimto. Maybe some cola bottles.

TaraRhu · 03/10/2026 09:57

If you've got a tummy bug it's the best thing... toast it and butter it.

Tryagain26 · 03/10/2026 09:58

Lots of reasons, it's could be all they can afford or that they like it.
I prefer it if I'm making a sandwich it's softer and it lets the filler be the star. I also sometimes prefer white bread toasted with jam.

BobbiBiscuits · 03/10/2026 09:59

Best thing for a tummy bug or feeling sick - is fizzy coca cola. Kills everything!

Strawberryteabag · 03/10/2026 10:00

Brown for first course, white for pudding. Brown is savoury, whites the treat.

Forkbangles · 03/10/2026 10:00

Poverty, that’s how

Bloody love cheap white bread. Make a sandwich with the cheapest thinnest ham you can find, butter excessively and squash before eating and you have yourself a real treat.

Add some crisps to it and it’s the perfect sandwich.

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

Because they like it. Everyone has different tastes.

Crisps sandwiches are food from the gods but it has to be white bread.
If you have never heard of it you haven't mixed with many people !

Omg you reckless UHP pusher.

🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️(…runs off to get cola bottles from the local shop… might have a monster munch chaser…)

mondaytosunday · 03/10/2026 10:02

I had a family stay with me and they left a bag of Tesco value crisps behind. I thought crisps are crisps but they were vile. But it was what they could afford (I’d rather do without myself).
You eat what you’re used to and if someone grew up eating cheap bread then that’s what bread tastes like to them.
