AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

There is a place for all bread. Leavened and unleavened.
Bacon sandwiches require white bread. Some would say of the ready sliced variety. I tend to prefer uncut but there you are.
White bread makes breadcrumbs. And summer pudding. A good white loaf made yourself ( you know what has gone in it), is a thing of heaven. Wonderful for scrambled egg, toasted. Bread sauce….
Wholemeal is for salmon or cucumber sandwiches. Nice with marmalade and jam.

Sourdough is delicious toasted too.

Your neighbour is very kind. Count yourself lucky to have them.

I’ve just got to have a crisp sandwich for lunch today. Although I was planning to fry up a load of streaky bacon that needs cooking… that might keep me going (on sliced white with brown sauce) past lunchtime

It's nice toasted with butter and marmite, and good for sarnies

Open gob
Shove in cheap white bread
Chew
Swallow
It works exactly the same no matter how expensive the bread is.

My youngest has a soya allergy and it's the only bread I can get that doesnt have soya in it apart from the expensive bakery bread and like many I'm on a budget. For many it's all they can afford. Be grateful for your kind neighbour.

FYI, most of aldi's own brand is soya free. Jacksons bread is also all soya free, thats quite nice and so is Jason's although granted that's a bit more expensive.

I'm suprised as when dd was soy free it was the cheap stuff that was always containing soya.

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

You’ve not lived (and neither has anyone you know, or they’re not admitting it)!

My preference is a roll with cheese and onion crisps and lots of butter but if I didn’t have a roll, I’d use “cheap” white bread.

Not every meal/snack has to be a healthy, high fibre, macro-balanced, high nutrient, vitamin loaded, non-UP, life-prolonging, salubrious clean eat. Sometimes, you just fancy something that’s just tasty but nutritionally a bit crap lol.

Loub1987 · 03/10/2026 08:48

I need something to contain my value brand crisps and to soak up the cheap lager I drink…..

I think this thread is very condescending. People buy it because they like it or because it’s cheap and filling.

Some folk have Pot noodle sandwiches. Here is The central belt we have a cheap white roll filled woth a pie !

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

As per all the other answers, @Njuy , either because they want to or because they have to. I doubt whether cheap wholemeal bread is any better for you. And no bread is really "good for you". Its role in our diet is as a filler/carrier.

Hope you feel better soon.

Silly question though.

Bloody love cheap white bread. Make a sandwich with the cheapest thinnest ham you can find, butter excessively and squash before eating and you have yourself a real treat.

ITMA2000 · 03/10/2026 08:54

I absolutely love Tesco 74p bread loaves! Soft and moist, bland, so it doesn't take the taste away from the filling! I also love moist sandwiches! Cheese, sliced toms and mayo, yummy!

Personally I don't like crisps but I find it hard to believe that the concept of crisp sandwiches has passed you by.

OP I hope you are whinging because you still feel unwell and not because you are a whingy ungrateful person.

Catza · 03/10/2026 08:58

Money troubles aside, I recon it's habit. I can't understand how people eat most things mentioned in this thread - crisps sandwich, chippy sandwich. A sandwich in general is odd to me as the ratio of bread to filling is all wrong with two slices of bread. But I am sure many people would be horrified by me eating an open sandwich on rye for breakfast.
Coming from continental Europe this bread is just completely foreign to me and even when I was a skinned student, I prioritised nice bread even if it meant making my own. The only time I had it regularly was when I lived in Japan for a bit and you can't get any other bread there. In fact, I guess it was closer to American one with extra thick slices and a ton of sugar.

Agree! For me, ham, mayo and very thin sliced cucumber or toms! Or even, thin cucumber with the crusts sliced off (given to the birds) and a little mayo or butter. Eaten in the garden with a bone China tea set.

We have a Cottage Bakery in this town who do not mark the bread
with the ingredients so I looked online - sure enough, Soya flour.
Now post bc surgery with a list of what not to eat, soya/flour featured

Now we are careful and read label. If I hadn’t I would be cheerfully
eating bread which could potentially harm me.
Navigating between soya and palm oil, aspartame and sweeteners,
flour and pulses from heavily chemically sprayed Canada, is difficult.

summersolsticesoon · 03/10/2026 08:59

I love artisan bread, sour dough, malted wheat bread , cranberry and pecan or walnut bread and focaccia but just occasionally a bacon sandwich made with cheap white bread is heaven.
Basic bread with real sea salt butter and lots of chunky marmalade is also delicious. UABU.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/10/2026 09:00

I don't like bread and therefore don't eat a lot of it, but I DO keep a cheap white loaf in the freezer for those occasional days when I really REALLY just want lots of butter on a vehicle that will get it in my mouth fast. Toasted white bread does the job. I don't want texture, I don't want some wanky artisan sourdough nonsense because I don't like bread. But when you have a sudden craving for a peanut butter sandwich or something to dip in your soup - cheap white is as good as anything else.

This must win the award for the most middle class post of 2026.

You're absolutely right; it needs to be organic too. Or else you'll definitely die within a week.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/10/2026 09:01

@summersolsticesoon Sorry, I posted my reply before I saw yours and did not mean to impune your artisan sourdough - I just don't like it personally!

Screamingabdabz · 03/10/2026 09:01

I make my own bread and don’t really notice any difference in taste 🤷🏻‍♀️ in fact I love going to a hotel where they bring you toasted cheap white bread on a toast rack and you smother it with butter and marmalade. I think some of these ‘artisanal’ breads are all fur coat and no knickers - they are nice for the first hit, but are very dense, and go stale as shit very quickly.

Artisan bread is usually full of Es and artificial additives.

Sorry, as unlikely as other posters think it is crisps in sandwiches have completely passed me by. I’m in the south west. Is it a more regional thing?

I prefer better quality bread but a slice of well buttered hot toast from a cheap supermarket loaf can taste divine.

This. Not divine. But good. Especially if I've been ill. Milk loaf is the best ill toast. Insubstantial. Good with chicken soup.

I was ill this week and eating heinz tomato soup and thinking how weird and sugary it is. UPF foods are strange but I don't think myself better than other people because I prefer homemade artisan version.
