AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

Nuts are also chock full of fats.
I am under the bariatrics team and I’ve been told to avoid them, as the fibre-benefits (which are apparently the only health benefit) can be very easily eaten elsewhere.
So I’ll keep them out of my kitchen. My kids don’t have allergies, but I’d rather not allow someone else’s airborne allergen potential death on my hands.

The vast majority of people are not under a bariatrics team so can eat nuts. The fats in nuts are unsaturated healthy fats. Better to have a handful of nuts than biscuits.

Lots of current research shows that nut allergies are not 'airborne' but occur due to surface contamination.

Bless your softest ever angora socks. What a dissembler you truly are Confused

If we got some nasty, chewy sourdough, and put expensive crisps on it and called it "artisanal", she'd probably pay £12.50 for it.

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

Pull the other one. Wide eyed criticism by stealth.

Find your gratitude, it will override your snobbery

I can’t eat whole meal bread or high fibre foods due to stomach problems. I use sliced white for toast and sandwiches but I only buy M&S! HTH

Dollymylove · 03/10/2026 08:23

I grew up on white bread.
My kids grew up on white bread
My grandkids are growing up on white bread.
None of us have been struck down by the plague
Yet.....

thatwasclose · 03/10/2026 08:24

Because when my kids were younger they could get through a loaf of bread a day between them. It is filling, cheap and with decent topping (peanut butter in my kids case) it was relatively nutritious. Far better than packs of crisps.

Personally I can't understand why anyone eats wholemeal or granary bread. Even the smell turns my stomach.
But dh loves those; different people like different things.

I suspect if my parents had been less set on having massive amounts of "healthy" bread when I was growing up though, I'd be able to stomach it now.

PoppysMammy · 03/10/2026 08:25

Unfortunately it’s all some people can afford. Bread has become stupidly expensive. Not everyone can make their own, or want to. Not everyone wants to cut crusty loaves or have sourdough (it’s often hard to find a nice fresh loaf that isn’t!). Some literally just want to buy cheap ready sliced bread to make sandwiches with. You were told to have plain white bread - which these days aren’t always available (sourdough, wholemeal, seeded etc are).

The same way they can eat rice, which also tastes of nothing. By pairing it with flavour and texture.

I don’t buy it often but the kids view it as a treat. It’s nice as hot buttered toast, bacon sandwich and the occasional ham and prawn cocktail crisp sandwich!

ImaSpringChicken · 03/10/2026 08:26

Different people like different things- shocker!

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

You’re missing out. Crisps in a sandwich is chef’s kiss! Apparently Margot Robbie loves them and even Julia Roberts. They’re just a version of the chip butty really. I love instant ramen noodles (cooked) in a sandwich.

EmptyInTheValley · 03/10/2026 08:27

Can't beat a Warburton's white sliced tiger loaf. But we also like sourdough and granary/wholemeal. Horses for courses.

redfairy · 03/10/2026 08:28

I rarely buy bread but I know that a cheap white sliced loaf absolutely has it's place. I wouldn't have a fishfinger butty on anything else. Or a Dairylea and crisp sandwich, Shipphams paste sandwich? Guess it's nostagia for me.

They’re good fats though. Fat is very important for brain health so it shouldn’t be completely avoided (not aiming that at you or the consuming of nuts, just that fat doesn’t automatically equal bad).

Very nice gesture from your neighbour. You sound like a snob, there are people out there who do not have the choice

It’s not snobbish to prefer one type of bread to another, it’s just taste

Wait until you hear about this 'curry' thing that is apparently popular amongst the hoi polloi these days - some filthy muck from the subcontinent as I understand it. But then what can you expect from people without even a modest kitchen garden?

You haven't lived until you've had a crisp sandwich. I'm assuming you've had a chip butty at some point?

I agree, some things are just better on sliced white bread. I eat the fancy sprouted, seeded etc breads ss the norm but fish fingers, crisps and chips all need white bread. Must be real butter though.

MyLimeGuide · 03/10/2026 08:39

The 75p white bread from lidl is the shizzle! Toasted with butter, marmite and peanut butter is my favourite breakfast 😁

teardropsrunning · 03/10/2026 08:40

I don't like white or wholemeal processed bread. Usually eat sourdough or ciabatta for sandwiches.
