AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

I am into bodybuilding and avoid simple carbs so bread is an occasional treat for me rather than something I eat normally. Sometimes I'll be on an 'off' day and go out for a burger, sometimes I'll eat a home-made pizza on those days, and sometimes I allow myself bread. Whenever I do, It's the crap, white, sugary stuff! Like the Warburton's toastie loaves or similar. My absolute favourite😆I guess the more crap it is, the more removed it is from a wholefood, the more of a treat it feels to me!

You don’t need to eat white bread after a stomach bug, that’s a myth. Wholemeal is far better.

I recently suffered a few days of an upset stomach and the advice (ok it was Google ai) said to pause my ‘good’ diet and eat white bread, white rice etc.

My youngest has a soya allergy and it's the only bread I can get that doesnt have soya in it apart from the expensive bakery bread and like many I'm on a budget. For many it's all they can afford. Be grateful for your kind neighbour.

Interested to know which you buy please. I have a soya allergy and I find cheap bread, especially white, often contains soya.

Omg you reckless UHP pusher.

🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️(…runs off to get cola bottles from the local shop… might have a monster munch chaser…)

😂And omg by adding monster munch (pickled onion) you've just made a brilliant snack - Elite

You can always rely on MN for too-notch faux naïveté… ‘oh I don’t understand how people can bear cheap xxx’… ‘what are value sausages? I only ever ever artisanal meatballs hand-rolled by nuns’… all of it absolutely bogus would-be superiority signalling.

OP, you know fine well why people might eat cheap white bread, don’t pretend otherwise.

And for the love of god, can people please stop giving Crisp Sandwich Denier the oxygen of attention?

bababamama · 03/10/2026 10:14

We have seeded wholemeal typically if buying a cut loaf but 80p white bread is fine, tasteless i grant you but toasted with butter and jam or with a simple sandwich filling is adequate and all many can afford. Personally I ideally would just eat sourdough rye but cut loaves are convenient and reasonable even my more expensive bread is only 99p in Lidl

BobbiBiscuits · 03/10/2026 10:15

I grew up with no bread or brown bread. No fizzy drinks. only home made food (was more affordable for my parents). And now my posh DH insists on buying posh poncey food (including bloody full fish which he fillets) and he spends way too much on it. Me, I like a crisp sandwich and cola bottles. And maybe a pasty on occasion.

Add some crisps to it and it’s the perfect sandwich.

Completely agree!

Has it occured to you that it's all some people can afford.

Most people would much prefer nicer, more expensive bread. But they can't afford it.

bababamama · 03/10/2026 10:20

And yes monster munch is food of the gods, fizzy cola bottles are amazing too (both added to shopping list as off to big asda in an hour). I fully scratch cook most dinners, have whole grain rice and pasta yet we are all allowed some treats, especially those things that take you straight back to being a kid. I had a fondant fancy this week!

BeWildPearlFish · 03/10/2026 10:20

I stopped buying supermarket bread at the start of the year. DCs and DH aren't really bread lovers and like wraps/rolls for lunch instead of sandwiches. I, on the other hand, was ploughing through the loaf most times to use it up and then had horrendous bloating, stomach pains and IBS symptoms.

I tried a no knead recipe after seeing a story on Instagram and was blown away at how easy and cheap it was, and how much nicer the bread was. Once I stopped eating shop bought loaves my symptoms disappeared almost overnight - I genuinely hadn't made any link to bread. I make bread once a week now and it's probably the easiest but highest gain recipe I've ever used.

It was a lovely gesture from your neighbour, and so many comments have covered why people buy it and eat it. I bought it because it was cheap, accessible and quick, and also because I thought baking bread at home was a long winded, complicated whole day affair

MyFavouriteGame · 03/10/2026 07:04

People buy it because it’s cheap, some people have no money.

Also cheap white bread makes the best toast and bacon sandwich.

I love a bacon sandwich, but if I can't have it on malted granary bread, I don't bother.

Sillyme1 · 03/10/2026 10:22

It is possible to buy white bread (which has most of the fibre removed), then add the fibre and it is then advertised as ‘with added fibre’!. Weird

Itsthewoluff · 03/10/2026 10:22

Wholemeal is the worst. Nice seeded, granary etc, lovely but i’ll take basic white over wholemeal.
Of course nice white is better normally, but basic white is grand for toast and you can’t beat a thickly buttered plain crisp sandwich on basic white.

Tortielady · 03/10/2026 10:23

I'm generally something of a bread snob and a regular shopper at an artisanal bakery somewhere. However, a lot of people just can't afford the prices, or don't care about bread enough to dig deep for it. Also, there are certain things, eg, fish-finger sandwiches, when nothing but white sliced will do. Just as a side issue, white and occasionally brown sliced is what you get at my local hospital if you've had one of those procedures where you have to fast for 36 hours. You get it toasted with butter and jam or marmalade and a cuppa and it tastes absolutely bl*y glorious. White sliced has its place, even in the Bread Snob Community.

Missey85 · 03/10/2026 10:23

It's simple I like the taste 😊💕

A cheesy Wotsit sandwich! Mind blown...

Love a crisp sandwich but Wotsits never entered my mind. Off to the corner shop now

Try monster munch too.
I thought eating crisp sandwiches was a European thing. It is very common in Ireland.
Whenever the children have world food day in school, you’ll always find an Irish child who made Tayto crisps on Brennan’s white bread with Kerry gold butter. Yum.

We buy the wheat and rye in lidl.
Rye seems to go down really well with my intestines compared to just plain wheat breads.

There is a talk that most of basic white flour is now way to overprocessed and too difficult to digest. I can get two same pizzas from different shops and one will make me bloat like hot air balloon, second one nothing. I believe it's the flour. We actually asked one place what flour they use because I had no reaction at all. Caputo flour is safe for me

Also oddly, I don't get reaction when I go to visit my family in central Europe. And that's where I eat LOT of bakery goods in a week.....

Honestly? Crisp sandwiches are famous.

Yesterday I called in the farm shop and bought lovely, expensive ham and when got home I made a sandwich with the usual seedy bread well buttered, ham topped with crisps, the whole thing squashed down to keep the crisps in!
My late OH used to say that he really liked granary or seedy bread except it wouldn't make fried bread, that needed cheap white bread for its absorption factor!
To answer the OP's question many people don't have a choice about the bread they buy and lots of other things.
