AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

I like nice bread but my favourite is tuna mayo on white with salt and vinegar crisps added in. Amazing!

dottiedodah · 03/10/2026 10:48

This has been a staple for the last few months due to Stoma surgery. From eating "everything"wholemeal bread ,fruit and veggies and so on .White bread (hopefully can try wholemeal now ) but no seeds .No tomatoes (pips a stoma blockage ,same green beans ,) Be grateful its only a few days .does taste better toasted !

VeganStar · 03/10/2026 10:49

Count yourself blessed that you’re not coeliac because that stuff tastes absolutely vile, yet there’s nothing cheap about it. In fact it costs twice the price for a loaf half the size and then it’s only fit for making toast out of.
I’d love to be able to eat normal bread, I really miss it no matter what the price.

supersonicginandtonic · 03/10/2026 10:49

Because it’s all some people can afford? 🤷‍♀️

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

Because some people have to…

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 03/10/2026 10:50

Jeez, late to this party and not rtft but I hope previous people have shoved your privilege in your face!

Because it’s cheap! Because people have no choice! Because Britain is a shithole country that regularly betrays and deliberate impoverishes its working people, because it despises the working class plebs!

And it’s worth remembering when you sneer and complain at the NHS providing it, again because it’s cheap and budgets are constrained, that the health care staff dishing it up to you may well have had no other choice than to eat that all their lives and are sick of the entitlement of the manuka honey and sourdough crowd they have to care for in shit conditions and low wages!

Jeez some of you people need a very strong reality check. Brexit did it, there were people on here being shocked at how little some people have but it didn’t last long.

If you create Landlords, you create tenants, people who own nothing but the clothes they wear, if they’re lucky enough not to be forced to throw them due to damp damage. There is food poverty in this country, there is gross inequality, where do you think the anger is coming from?

Get out of your leafy suburbs and go and look at how your fortunate lives force others here to live. How ‘let them eat cake’ can you get? It seems Britain, once again, is trying very hard to push it just for the sake of seeing how far they can go.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/10/2026 10:55

I eat it in a similar fashion to how I eat more expensive bread.
It's easy, I just bite a piece off and chew it - I've been doing it since I was a child.

How can you not have heard of a crisp sandwich?😂

They walk among us!

Fernsarethebestplants · 03/10/2026 10:59

I've switched to bread with the fewest ingredients (Jason's sourdough) or no bread with most meals. Much less bloating and it's an easy switch for cutting down ultra-processed food.

It's down partly to money and partly to culture, it's disgusting stuff white bread but that's what's cheap and everywhere and that's why a lot of people feel unhealthy and/or have weight problems, not just the bread but the very artificial processed nature of most of the basics, not good bread, watery chicken with not enough protein per g and old veggies and fruit artificially ripened.

If you pop into the shops in France or a lot of the continent, the bread, chicken and veg and fruit are better quality, that's why it feels healthier even though you are eating the same basic diet.

It's not worth going into why, but basically that's the cheap food to produce and people are used to spending their money in a certain way.

People buy it because it’s cheap, some people have no money.

Also cheap white bread makes the best toast and bacon sandwich.

I came here to say this. I like to see finger indentations in it. Plastic bread, crispy drippy bacon, butter and brown sauce. Fit.

Ebonyflow · 03/10/2026 11:00

There’s a time and place for ‘cheap’ (nothing is cheap these days!) white bread.
Jam sandwiches, crisp sandwiches, beans on toast, bacon and sausage sandwiches. Other than that I avoid it, it’s like eating air.
But it’s not hard to understand why some people eat it daily. It tends to cost less, you can get larger loaves with thinner slices so it goes further, some people will just prefer the taste and texture.

Fernsarethebestplants · 03/10/2026 11:01

It's not just money, though, that bread is eaten by most of the population.

It is about cheapness but not only about that.

it's what you are used to and what you think normal bread is like, it's not what it's like in much of the continent where bakeries produce different products, still with white flour but fresh, fewer ingredients.

The bread we have has a very long shelf life and is disgusting, but it is cheap and that's its advantage.

Partly money, partly habit, partly what's easily available.

Netcurtainnelly · 03/10/2026 11:02

You could say it about anything . Cheap coffee. Tea bags. Margarine, Cereal
and so on.
It's all some people can afford. Food is very expensive.

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

You have never had a crisp buttie?
Its a taste revelation i tell ya 😂

Fizbosshoes · 03/10/2026 11:17

This thread inspired me to buy a pappy white loaf, and im making some egg mayo for sandwiches. Yum

Also the basic bread cuts more neatly into soldier if you have egg and soldiers

Also because some people like it.. it's my treat

Gengha · 03/10/2026 11:20

i like it toasted with butter

Fernsarethebestplants · 03/10/2026 11:20

Love everyone rushing out and eating 'white bread' like it's a treat.

The whole point is it's a staple for much of the population, and this kind of crappy processed food as a basic is why we have obesity (IMO). It's part of the so-called 'obesogenic' environment, and the evidence is that diet forms most of that, not lack of exercise. You literally can't outrun a pappy white loaf if you consume it daily for 60 or 70 years.

I grew up with no bread or brown bread. No fizzy drinks. only home made food (was more affordable for my parents). And now my posh DH insists on buying posh poncey food (including bloody full fish which he fillets) and he spends way too much on it. Me, I like a crisp sandwich and cola bottles. And maybe a pasty on occasion.

Does your husband say that he is going to fillay the fish or fillet it? The former would have me slapping his face with it.

As a 'treat' it's obviously fine! Ultra-processed food made with a long shelf life full of preservatives is not harmful occasionally, but that's not how most people consume it, is it?

Also, treat?

Haagen-Dazs chocolate chip ice cream, clearly!

Popstarrrrr · 03/10/2026 10:07

Interested to know which you buy please. I have a soya allergy and I find cheap bread, especially white, often contains soya.

Jason's sourdough is all I buy as it only contains flour, water, salt and fermented wheat flour. Cheap bread contains all sorts of rubbish.

Doggydoctor · 03/10/2026 11:25

Ladies the best toast has got to be after given birth. Delicious hot buttered white bread OMG food of the gods right at that moment. I will never forget the heavenly experience.
of course OP possibly went private and had lovely artisanal toasted, or not.
When our dog is ill I will give him dry white toast or white rice.

😂'fillay'. No he def doesn't say that, he says fillet.. He's posh but genuinely not a nob 😆
