AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

@Eire12 Genuinely, why does it annoy you when someone buys a house with more bedrooms that you decide they may possibly need?

Edited

Obviously the same reason why it annoys me that people selfishly buy two or more houses. Young people have no hope in getting houses when the older generation are being greedy & selfish. This is part of the reason that so many need to emigrate.

Well, I bought a 4 bed, 3 bath, 2 reception room house as a single woman, with the intention to remain single and childfree for life.
I renovated, knocking two of the bedrooms together to make one fabulous master suite, with a dressing room/walk in wardrobe which is epic and an en-suite; I’ve turned the box room into a cloakroom and kept a spare bedroom for guests. The second reception room is a study/exercise room combo. Oh, I also extended the kitchen and dining room. Mortgage paid off over 11 years, by the time I was 43. But op probably thinks I should be living in a bedsit somewhere and grateful for it!

Sounds fabulous!

Poppy61 · 03/10/2026 08:02

If people can afford it, its up to them

Icantbebothered · 03/10/2026 08:03

I have a 6 bedroom house. There are 3 of us. I’m sorry if that offends you, but you don’t know anyones family circumstances.

And as it happens, both DH and I work from home, so two of the bedrooms are converted to offices. DD has her bedroom and another room, converted to a study/hang out room for her. And one spare bedroom for guests. All rooms used, daily.

Yanbu. There is a newly built estate near us , the houses are also 5 bed. The majority have been bought by snooty, older (60s+) couples with adult dc (not living with the couples) It really does annoy me tbh as does the fact that a lot of people round here have two houses ( one rented out or air b&b )which I think is extremely selfish also.

How is it selfish . No one is stopp ing you buying one. There is no shortage.

CarryOnRewardless · 03/10/2026 08:06

Me, my husband and son live in a 4 bed detached.
There’s actually more toilets in the house than there are people 🤣 (downstairs loo, main bathroom and two of the bedrooms have an en-suite)

Does that make us selfish?

We have exactly the same number of toilets as people. It's brilliant. Especially when we lost water this summer for a few days and we could each have our own designated loo as we couldn't flush. Grin

Sounds great! We moved here in May our old house had just the one toilet upstairs I don’t know how we survived 🤣🤣

But in ops scenario, it IS young people who have “selfishly” bought a 5 bed house? So how does that work? Perhaps, for you, they must be “snooty”???

AgnesX · 03/10/2026 08:16

Have you nothing better to do than curtain twitch at the new neighbours OP?

It's absolutely none of your business what their occupant to bedroom ratio is or why. As long as they can afford it and it's legal that's all there is to it.

WobblyJogger · 03/10/2026 08:19

activedough · 02/10/2026 20:24

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

No polo lounge? How disappointing.

I already have a 4 bed thanks. But we have kids. I will definitely be downsizing when they move out.

SP2024 · 03/10/2026 08:22

Maybe they are planning to have kids? We moved into our four bed house when I was a few weeks pregnant (so no neighbours would have known). We extended and put in another loft room so now five bed. We now have three kids and use one as an office when we WFH half the week each so no longer “bigger than we need”. Should we have moved house every time we had another kid? That’s not financially feasible with stamp duty and moving costs so we bought the house we’d need eventually first.

OonaStubbs · 03/10/2026 01:28

It is very selfish to stay in a house that is bigger than you need. But I would hesitate to say it should be illegal. There should probably be a higher rate of council tax to pay though.

I already pay £430 a month for council tax. How much more do you think I should be paying to get the exact same services as my neighbours?

I must have missed that as it's not in the OP? In that case they may be planning on having dc?

escapegoats · 03/10/2026 08:25

I plan to keep our big 5 bed house until we decide we need to move into an "Old age" property
a) because I have a lovely community around here that I have built up through volunteering (including helping a small almshouse charity to grow and provide additional affordable homes locally)
b) because I want our children to be able to boomerang back if they need to, for whatever reason. I know that knowing "I could always move back home" gave me the security to take risks with jobs (and thereby climb the career ladder) and leave a bad relationship. It also just gave me peace of mind for my mental health to know that safety net was always there
c) I like to host friends who are scattered all over the world
d) If my kids move away I want them (and their families if they have them) to be able to come and visit without feeling cramped /having to stay in a hotel

You did miss it, op states that they are “late 20s”. Which rather destroys your argument about selfish old folk and the impossibility for young people to access housing, wouldn’t you say?

It doesn’t matter though. They get to choose how they spend their money.

DH and I moved into 5 bedroom house as a couple without children. 5 years later later we'd added 3 children to our family...

Plus if they both work at home maybe they're planning on using some of the bedroom space for that?

For a long time two of our children shared, we had a spare room for guests (my parents lived a few hours away and visited regularly) and DH used the fifth bedroom as his office.

I'm really curious as to why you care so much OP?

A lot of people aren’t happy in their own life so they to bring others down or be jealous of others.

PoppysMammy · 03/10/2026 08:28

Private housing isn’t social accommodation. It’s none of your business how many move into a property if they buy it. Now if the Government wants to buy every single property and house people based on needs, great. Until then there will always be the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’.

Herewegoagain57 · 03/10/2026 08:29

Perhaps they have the money and both work from home so they want the office space
Perhaps it’s their dream home and they want kids
Perhaps they just have the money and think why not

A young couple bought the extended five bedroom house next door to us a couple of years ago. They have since had a baby. Never occurred to me that they were being selfish.
