AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

But we don’t live in a society/ economy that is built around things “going to” those who need it.

This country works on the basis of people buying what they want if they can afford it, from money they’ve earned, inherited, won on the lottery or whatever other means. Or borrowed of course! If you’ve got it, you can spend it.

If you think property and other material wealth should be given out according to need then it would be time for a radical rethink, and you may not enjoy it! (Also a system open to huge corruption and abuse!)

Imagine being so bothered by something that doesn't affect your life in any way that you post online about it. Sounds like jealousy to me, especially posting the ages of the new neighbours

activedough · 02/10/2026 20:24

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

so?

jealousy is an ugly trait. If you want a 5 bed house, buy one? There are new developments everywhere in this country, and plenty of houses for sale too.

MardyMillylala · 02/10/2026 23:24

Its nobody else's business but theirs tbh. My best friend & her partner have a 4 bed detached house but no children. They have separate bedrooms & she uses one as an office leaving a spare room for guests. The eventual plan is for her parents to move in so that she can help her mum care for her dad who has dementia. As a single female I wouldn't expect to be judged if I bought a 3 bed detached, as long as I could afford it.

dontforgetofeedthecat · 02/10/2026 23:29

even as a single female, by the time you have your bedroom, your dressing room, your office, a couple of guests rooms, you very easily use a few rooms.

Fancy being miserable and stuck in a studio flat to cheer up the OP 😂

Sounds amazing - and as though you need a couple of dogs!

Thankyou, am looking forward to moving in, not been able to for quite a few months due to lack of builder availability. Oh, we have a nervous cat for now though I do love a doggy.

I was thinking about learning wildlife rehabbing and perhaps turning one of the outhouses into somewhere I can help hedgehogs and the like. Or turn into somewhere for cat rescue as a mate works for Cats protection and are always looking for temporary stays, I could use a room indoors for that too. Will see how much energy have once we've fixed the house and done it up (it's very broken at the mo!).

I have 2 children. DH and I have separate bedrooms as I’m up a lot at night with a medical condition. His bedroom doubles as both our home office - we both wfh at least 3 days per week. So all rooms in use as bedrooms and one doubling as an office for 2.

Wow

So you do have more rooms than you really need then.

Why can't your living room act as an office? Or your kitchen?

Why cant your kids share?

Really, you shouldn't be so wasteful, a 2 or 3 bed house would be sufficient, surely....

Forkbangles · 02/10/2026 23:33

I love rattling about in our house

YetAnotherAlias62 · 02/10/2026 23:33

If they can afford it, why not?
Wouldn't it be more selfish of them to buy a 2 bedroom house and prevent someone else buying it who doesn't have the money for a 5-bed?
I'm not sure why it bothers you so much tbh

Schoolchoicesucks · 02/10/2026 23:33

Why is it selfish? Who are they depriving by moving in?

What was the name of the guy with a pair binoculars looking out his window on the 90s sketch show who was a nosey neighbour? Someone here must remember the sketch and the man's name?

It was Michael Paine from Harry Enfield and Chums.

Onbdy · 02/10/2026 23:42

This is one of the most ridiculous posts I’ve read on here!
You won’t like me, there are two of us in a 4 bedroom detached! We have two offices plus a spare room. We do have 4 adult DC and one GC so far. We want the room for them when they come to stay.

florenceandthemac · 02/10/2026 23:44

Have they got a 2 seater car?

I love the idea of using some space to foster rescue cats - or acquire one or two more. All that space to roam!!

When my kids were younger I ran an after-school child minding business from home (which was how I ended up fostering two boys) - it was lovely to have the house full of kids and dogs. I was a guider/scout leader at the time and had lots of energy back then. No way could I do that again now.

I’ve been re landscaping the garden in recent years to attract butterflies and pollinators and been delighted with the results this year. Our house may be large, but we’ve filled it will lots of kids and memories over the years - am hoping there’ll be more if we’re blessed with grandkids one day. Otherwise… more dogs!

Whoops75 · 02/10/2026 23:54

They can afford it so none of your business.

InterIgnis · 02/10/2026 23:56

We bought the house we wanted, not merely the house that met our needs.

I’m quite content being happily, and spaciously, selfish.

Fortuity · 02/10/2026 23:57

I must say, this is the first I've heard about the tragedy of the nationwide shortage of five bedroom houses leaving large well-off families in desperate straits because they can't find any to buy. Tell us more about it, OP.

Haven’t RTFT but I bought a 3 bed terrace for myself when I was 19 and DH and I bought a 4 bed detached when we were 27 and 29 and then extended to add another 2 multi-purpose rooms. That was 20 years ago and we still live there. We have 2 proper home offices, a gym, a spare room for guests (as both families live far away) and 2 spacious bedrooms for us and DD. Mortgage was paid off before DH turned 50 and we’ve never lost any money climbing the ladder as we went pretty close to the top in 2-3 jumps. Not sure what your issue is?

Summersongroses · 03/10/2026 00:00

Gosh. I live in a 3 bed terrace house. And there’s just me. Should I live in a 1 bed flat???

Skodacool · 03/10/2026 00:01

The house is not ‘going to’ them, they’re buying it and perfectly entitled to. Maybe they’re going to have a lot of visitors.

Broom cupboard and be grateful, it seems.

I just think less competition would help so many people. I just fundamentally disagree with having way more space than you need when so many people have fallen on hard times and their kids are living like sardines

How exactly would it help the people who have fallen on hard times, if this couple buys a smaller house? Surely if anything it would harm them by reducing the number of available small houses for them to choose from?
