To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

The VAT thing saves £5/month for six months.

And from today, energy bills are going up by 4% so, errr…. Guess what happens to your fiver!

Yeah. I think some people don’t read the fine print….

NorthernJim · Today 05:36

Yes he's very slick. Just like Tony Blair was (who turned out to be a slipper fucker and a war criminal). He's a good politician, which means he'll say anything that he thinks people want to hear.

Sorry, I missed your post before I basically posted the same thing. Still half asleep!

@IsThePopeCatholic

He’s abstaining from the vote on assisted dying.

Frazzledfraggle07 · Today 05:45

I'm really not a fan of Andy Burnham, I have always voted labour but don't intend to this time. instead of removing the triple lock why not tax benefit claimants who get more than the tax threshold, I'm sure that would raise more money.

MellowSubmarine · Today 05:45

No There is no VAT gas bills. Still paying VAT on electricity bills. Savings for a normal house on gas is about £46 per year. Savings on no VAT for an average house would be about £300. So why not scrap the VAT on electricity too…..

Just to be picky, it’s the other way round. VAT has been cut for electricity, not gas.

ThePelican · Today 05:46

TallSturdyGirls · Today 04:18

What didn't he mention?

Defence spending, or to be more correct, lack of it.

Government borrowing through the roof.

Cost of government borrowing as high as it was in 2008 at the time of the financial crash.

Building societies starting to pull fixed rate mortgages at less than 5%.

But apparently all will be well because the p.m. cries a few crocodile tears.

Much as I hate the guy I sometimes think Trump would probs return more benefits for native brits than most of the leaders we've suffered.

I highly doubt he'd entertain a situation where men who illegally enter the country are put up in hotels while former taxpayers falling on hard times are literally given a tent and sleeping bag. I doubt he'd be paying for stuff like condoms in Pakistan either.

America is so isolated and internally divided now. Let's not aspire to any of their problems created by this maniac.

I would really love to know what all the
people ripping Burnham to shreds on here would actually prefer? A far right government run by Nige the grifter who will do fuck all for anyone apart from enrich his rich mates. And who doesn’t give a fuck about anyone but himself.

All the complaining about the triple lock drives me mad - there are 1.25 million young people out of work and education and a student debt system that is literally ruining the lives of our young people- who are literally the future of this country.

I think Burnham is great- I might even rejoin the Labour Party.

Hereinmyarms · Today 05:53

Also, to the person using the term ‘native Brits’ on the post on here- there is no such thing. We are all incomers. Jog on with your racist shite.

Good speech. I listened to him on the radio this morning defend his policies really well. Also a massive refreshing change to not hear him slag off his opposition once, not to use the phrases I cannot stand of ‘let me be clear…’ before talking an absolute load of tosh or the equally hideous ‘look…’ before spouting tosh. Even more amazingly my life long Tory supporting father in law said if he had to vote tomorrow he’d vote for him.

My lifelong Tory voting mum said that she thinks he can talk the talk but wants to see if he can walk the walk now. I never thought I'd hear her say that about a Labour leader!

But if people can’t afford to retire because their pensions are so low, so stay in jobs, won’t that mean there are actually fewer jobs for young people…..

He’s worse than Starmer which is not something I thought was possible.

If he stays in office until 2029 I fear we’ll be past the point of no return.

The lack of talent and experience in this government is frightening.

Ahhh yes - and Boris was so much better 🙄

He can’t talk about defence spending without highlighting his chancellor’s complete lack of integrity in resigning because he just couldn’t bear to serve in a gov that wouldn’t commit to 3%, and then becoming chancellor, having the power to do what he himself said was vitally important, and then refusing to commit to 3%.

His resignation over defence was one of the final nails in Starmer’s coffin, but he should have resigned honestly, and given his real reason (that he didn’t support Starmer anymore, which would have been fair enough).

Well given it’s under review and not announced yet- not really sure what your point is.

But I work in HE and I see every day how terrible things are for young people and how the current system isn’t working for young people or universities.

Thecatbeggar · Today 06:06

I thought it was an amazing speech, best I’ve heard by any party leader for as long as I can remember (although I’ll admit my knowledge is pretty limited). He’s a great politician and I felt genuinely hopeful after I’d listened to it. That said I am a lifelong Labour voter, although for the first time ever had been seriously wavering in my support pre AB, so I hope he delivers on what he said.

pattercare · Today 06:08

I saw the bits on the news and I guess they would have chosen the 'best' bits and it was self indulgent tosh

That’s not really my point. A mark of a decent society is that everyone has a comfortable life, access to opportunities etc.

Years of Tory focus on pensioners over young people has created this problem. Saddling students with the burden of holding up the university system, not investing in FE education or trades, a fucking stupid and Victorian GCSE system that suits no one. No proper apprenticeships, no national careers service to help young people- the list is endless.

Closing youth centres, sure start centres, libraries, chronic under funding of schools, no proper support for any young people on benefits, closing job centres. Undermining any support systems for our young people.

But hey- let’s support pensioners because they vote for us. It’s an absolute travesty.

Perplexed20 · Today 06:13

OnlyOneAdda · Yesterday 21:57

Fuck my life. Anyone with any basic maths or economics can tell you that moving from a triple lock to a double lock (with caveat to still raise to triple rate in certain circumstance - yes this isn’t a BIG BOLD change) will NOT fund a National Care Service free at the point of service for everyone. It’s depressing that there are people out there that think it will.

At least its a start.

Nooo the point is, if no one can afford to stop working, where are the new jobs coming from?

If you hold out for a few minutes of introduction about family he does move pretty quickly to announcements! The speech was a masterclass in communication generally, starting with a lot of “10 year plans” and then just when I was starting to think “hmm this is a lot of 10 year plans…” he says “but I know that many are struggling right now and need to see change soon, which is why there will be no VAT on energy bills from Thursday” 👏👏👏👏.

I also enjoyed how he called out, by first name, each minister who will be spearheading the various projects as he announced them, a very inclusive teamwork style of leadership.

Except he didn't move on. Don't get me wrong - I approve of the policies he is proposing, but - for example - the idea that the union is worth preserving because his dad liked it? Sorry Andy that your dad died, it's awful and many of us have been there. But don't try to use it to manipulate us emotionally; it's just what a politician would do.

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · Today 06:30

Lastofthesummerwines · Today 00:26

To all the people moaning about Andy and Labour...on a serious note, Who would you vote for if there was a GE tomorrow, because I think this is basically all we've got right now. We dont really have another party to vote for who could save us . All as bad as each other so if Andy can't sort us out , there's no hope left.

This is exactly what I wonder too. The cost of borrowing would be through the roof for any government. Global energy prices would be a crisis for any government. I haven’t heard any of the opposition parties offer a genuine, pragmatic solution to those problems. In fact, from alot of them, all we’re hearing is the same old short term, populist soundbites.

At least the Prime Minister is brave enough to talk about doing big things -like modifying the triple lock, a financial lever the media have constantly suggested it would be electoral suicide to pull. At least he’s honest about the fact that real, transformative change takes time. At least he’s talking positively about his own ideas, instead of constantly sniping at his opponents and doing the country down. And mostly, at least he talks like a man who actually wants to unite the country, not continually divide us.
