To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

If you hold out for a few minutes of introduction about family he does move pretty quickly to announcements! The speech was a masterclass in communication generally, starting with a lot of “10 year plans” and then just when I was starting to think “hmm this is a lot of 10 year plans…” he says “but I know that many are struggling right now and need to see change soon, which is why there will be no VAT on energy bills from Thursday” 👏👏👏👏.

I also enjoyed how he called out, by first name, each minister who will be spearheading the various projects as he announced them, a very inclusive teamwork style of leadership.

The VAT thing was announced ages ago though, so not a great example announcements in the speech.

But he’s certainly very good at delivery, holding the audience etc.

I’ll chip in 20p and half a Crunchie. That’ll go towards it too 🙄

Ok, maybe you could listen to parts of speech again, because he said he will fight for people to have better lives and for things to happen he needs people to work together. I think it was a very balanced honest and extremely heartfelt speech. He really wants to get the country moving forward.

HalzTangz · Yesterday 23:21

I think he will be like every previous prime minister, promises the earth and delivers nothing that actually helps people

Yeah he keeps saying net migration is down. Whats he going to do about all those whose claims have been denied and they havent been removed?

Returns have gone up under Labour as well. So let's park the immigration debate now and focus on the things that really matter.

This, it depends on those who’ve actually worked and paid their ni contributions for 40+ years to bleat about how wonderful it is for those who work and contribute to society to claim no state pension and be so so heppy!!! To pay towards generation 6+ of net takers!

20p and half a crunchie is a lot by 2050 because it’s 24 years away. Christ.

From your posts its obvious you wouldn't be happy with anything he said
I dont agree with many of his thoughts but admired the speech and passion
Try opening your ears o occasion

To all the people moaning about Andy and Labour...on a serious note, Who would you vote for if there was a GE tomorrow, because I think this is basically all we've got right now. We dont really have another party to vote for who could save us . All as bad as each other so if Andy can't sort us out , there's no hope left.

GaIadriel · Today 00:28

Much as I hate the guy I sometimes think Trump would probs return more benefits for native brits than most of the leaders we've suffered.

I highly doubt he'd entertain a situation where men who illegally enter the country are put up in hotels while former taxpayers falling on hard times are literally given a tent and sleeping bag. I doubt he'd be paying for stuff like condoms in Pakistan either.

The VAT thing saves £5/month for six months.

And from today, energy bills are going up by 4% so, errr…. Guess what happens to your fiver!

I am pragmatic and pretty centre-left (actually centre-right on certain topics) so I am very open to debates around costing policies but I do hope you find time to actually watch the speech, which was about more than balancing the books on one specific idea and was a very nice antidote for division and cynicism in favour of compassion, hope and vision.

Compassion, hope are good but economy and solving financial troubles of the country requires a little bit more efforts and a solid plan.

Bloodysquirellls · Today 00:49

I haven’t listened to it. But he’s a great speaker.

Problem is when I have a moment to process said speech reality checks in and I think is that really a good idea!?

So honestly jury is out on him for me atm. I like the sound of some of his ideas (but on reflection not sure I like the actual ideas). I like his ambition.

I absolutely hate his rejoin EU idea. And that just makes me think he’s a delusional fantasist

Meandthegherkin · Today 00:56

I didn’t understand it. There are some massive issues right now and he didn’t seem to mention any of them. I want Labour to succeed as I don’t want to be politically homeless any more but this was like watching someone pinging around in a retro bubble.

did anyone else not realise that it’s only care in your own home that’ll be covered by this Care Service? Residential care homes still need to be paid for by the user

I’m not sure what the issue with that is?

if you are sick you go to hospital- if you are not able to cope at home alone and have an asset worth hundreds of thousands then you use that to pay for the place you move to to be cared for?

why should I pay for it? I’m already paying for my own house that I live in?

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · Today 01:29

Loved it. Best thing I have seen in politics for decades.

You're not being unreasonable, but this would have been more suitable in the politics forum.

No I didn’t realise that’s what’s on offer. By free social care, I assumed he meant not having to pay every penny from our assets to private sector providers offering substandard residential care. Not sure how much paid care will keep us in our homes for longer. Will it contracted out to private providers again (private equity firms) or be state run provision?

My understanding is that in Canada, 80% of people’s incomes (pensions, dividends etc) are taken by the state to fund care home placements, but people don’t have to cash in every asset accrued over a lifetime to pay for their care in old age. That would be a nice solution.

fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing

How on earth can he / the govt do this? All gas is sold in global markets. Even gas produced in the UK is sold in global markets. By private energy firms.

Net migration has decreased significantly under Labour.
His speech was excellent. I now have hope that this is the man with a long term plan that will benefit the masses. I haven't felt this hopeful in a very long time.

If it has it wouldn't surprise me, there are less jobs since Kier came in, so what would an immigrant come here for.

EmailsaysOOO · Today 05:19

dustabsorber · Yesterday 22:43

Basically, we lose the triple lock and gain having someone to come round once a month and cut out toenails for free?

As people get older they need a lot of medical care. There is probably a grey line about personal care such as cutting toe nails. The cost of giving medical treatments to the elderly though is massive

Do you know that vat on energy is only 5%? So if your electricity direct debit is £100 a month you'll save £5? This is for 6 months. I can't really see it making anyone feel better off given how much electricity prices are set to rise.

No There is no VAT gas bills. Still paying VAT on electricity bills. Savings for a normal house on gas is about £46 per year. Savings on no VAT for an average house would be about £300. So why not scrap the VAT on electricity too…..
